A Cariosity.
We saw on Wcdnenday. with a threat deal of wonder, at the store of Mr. W. T. Cannon, a couple of botiles, each of which would hold over a quart, and in one of which was a saw mill in operation, and in the other a flour mill also in operation. Uoth mills were moved by a crank in the neck of each bottle. The bottles and machinery were in possession of Mr. A. II. Buckingham, who is in the employ of Mr Cannon. Mr. B. says the machinery was built within their covering about 35 year* ago, by a person then resident of N. York State, but now deceased. Me did it on a wager of $2,000, which ho won in less than three years, which was tho time allowed (or the work. It has been suggested that the glass must have been blown over the machinery but it is also staled that such a thing would be impossible with such kind of bottles. Tliey are tilled full with the machinery, which is braced and pinned, and otherwise made strong.— There are cog wheels. The neck of each bottle is filled with a plug, which is keyed close up to the neck. Yhe mystery of getting "in the key, when there hardly room between the'plug and the neck of the bottle to get in a tool'as large as a shingle nail, is as great as any other wonder about the ingenious affair. These curiosities may be seen by anybody, for a few days, without anv charge of course.— Xcw Ihtven Palladium.
:ti Ar«onic unit Consumption# Arsenic nromises to become a must potent agent in materia mcdica. and pretensions are even put forth lhat it is anefFcc-, tual antidote against consumption, the scourge of our climate. We cut the following extract from an exchange:
Travellers have already given accounts of the arsenic eaters of the. Carpathian mountains. This drug gave them blooming complexions, aud enabled them to endure long ascending walks on the mountains without overtaxing their lungs. They had, however, to increase the dose continually, and life closed between the two alternatives, to stop and die of inanition, or go on and perish of the excess.
A correspondent of the New York
speaking of the same habit, refers to tho statement of M. Moutiguy. French Consul in China, in reference to the use of arsenic by the Chinese. He says they mingle it in their smoking tobacco,. The custom is peculiar to certain provinces, and so common that, according to thetes timonv of ilte missionaries who livtd a IOULJ
lime there, tobauio free fiom arsenic is not sold. The same witness assured the Consul that, arsenic smokers were stout fellows, wiih "lungs liko a blacksmith's bellows, and »o»y us cherubs,M
