•'v. THC LUitb'j PBAIEH. A friend teUs us an'anecdote of Booth, tlie groat ir%&8^nlMliiolf we dohtot Recollect priui. It occurred
in the palnyf spnrfcle of hi* Wdcfc eve lmJ beii»e
dim by Uiatfeiic of^Vufui^sfVoiig drink Booth and several friends had been invited to dine with an. old gf-ntlenuin in Baltimore, at" distipguj-ilu'd kinilnt's*, urbanity and pio y. The bust. though disapproving of theatre*-and theatre-goinsj. had heard 560 Tiiuch of Booth's remarkable powers, that curiosity to sec the man. had in tlm instance, overcome all his scruples and prejudices. After the entertainment was over, lamps lijjh'ed, and the company re-seated in the drawing room, some one requested Uool'h as a particular favor, and one which all present would doubtless appreciate. to read aloud the Lord prayer. Booth expressed his willingness to afford ibem this gratification, and all eyes were fixed expectantly upon him. Booth rose slowly andWet^renfly from* his chair. I' was wonderful to ua'ch the play of emotions that convulsed his countenancoi He became deadly paid, and bis eyes, turned tremblingly upward, were wet with tears* As yet, he had not spoken. The silence could be felt. It became absolutely painful, until.at last, the spell was broken as if by an electric shock, as his rich toned roicc, 'from white lips, syllabled forth. "Our father who art in Heaven." kc., wilh a pathos and ft fervid solemnity that thrilled all hearts. He finished. The silence continued. JuH-a voice heaid, or a muscle moved in his rapt audicncc, until from a remote corner of the room, a subdued sob was heard, and the old gentleman, (their host) stepped forward with streaming eyes and loitering frame, and seized Booth by the hand. -Sir," said he "you have afforded me a pleasure for •which my whole future life will feel grateful. 1 am an old man. and every day. from my boyhood to the present time, I thought I repeated the Lord's Prayer, but have never heard it before,nw-' "You are right," replied Booth To read that prayer as it should be read, has cost rnc the severest study and labor for thirty years, and I am far from being yet satisfied of my rendering of that wonderful production.^"Ilardly one person in ten thousand, comprehends how much beauty, tenderness And grandeur, can be condensed in a space so small, and in words so simple. That prayer of itself, sufficiently illustrates the truth of the Bible, and stamps upon it the seal of divinity."
So great was the effect produced (says our informaut, who vaspresont.) tlmt conversation was sustained-but a short time longer, in subdued ntohosyllables, and almost. Entirely ceased htvl soon after, at an early hour, the company broke up, and retired to their several homes, with sad faces and full heart?.
•tafoof tlio IMiigiic-NtrtcUcn Cily. A letter from Norfolk to one of the Baltimore papers, dtaws this sad picture "The thousands of our citizens who are scattered about in this arid other Slates, nrc very anxious to return to their home?. This, however, will be dangerous to do until the appearance of frost, which jve trust, may not be. delayed more than a week or two longer, although we may not have it for three or (bur. A strange, as well as sad state of things, they will find when they return to this plague-stricken city, ajid long years will be required to restore it to its wonted prosperity nnd happiness, Wives who are absent, have lost their husbands who remained at home mothers their children sisters their brothers, and hundreds of relatives and friends who separated a few weeks ago will meet uo more in this world. The friends nnd acquaintances of some families will look in VMin for a single member of the household. kTho destroying angel, in the execution his commission, and in the exercise of liia stupendous power, has gone in among many a happy family circle, and in a few brief days made it desolate by the removal of the fairest and best, striking down and rertoving one, two, three, and. in some cases, all the inmates of the once oyous home.
It is painful, indeed, to reflect on the many men of mind.genuis, enterprise and character who have been swept away. Ilow great a vacuum has this calamitous visitation caused in a few weeks A large number of our most valuable citizens are gone ffom our midst. We should bow submissively to the decree of our Great Ruler and Creator, but sadly and awfully indeed is our citv afflicted.
A RKBCKE.—In a recent criminal trial in Michigan, the wife and infant child of the accused, accompanied by a minister of the gospel in the relation of a friend of the family, were constantly present, and afforded the consul for the defence an opportunity, which was not lost, to makts very patnetic appeal to the jury. The iudge thereupon took occasion to stale, in his charge, that he "hoped never again to witness such things brought into court at part of the machinery of the defence."
V'Keep ii before the People, that the following resolutions were adopted by the Indiana Democrats in 1S49: .Resolved, That the institutiort of slavery ought not to be introduced into any territory where it does not exist.
