opening hole, in which he inserted one of his fore paws, while with the other he clung to the edge of the large hole, thereby securing a firm grip. Then another would descend until he could embrace the first one round the hips, and so on till a perfect chain was formed, tail downwards, reaching to the bait. Then a rat which had held himself in reserve, ran down the chain and bore away the prize! But the most curious part of the story is yet to come. Our informant says that when the bait was brought out not a rat ventured to touch it until the chain was unlinked and all were presciitto shah: its disposal.— Westfield Transcript.

WHAT A SAILOK TIIOUGMT CK MtrfsroNs. —At the anniversary of the London Missionary Society, Rev. Mr. McLcod related the following incident ''Twenty-one years ago, he had read in the account of some voyage, things to the discredit of the Missionaries of this Society. Shortly after, meeting with the caplain of a ship that voyaged to the South Seas, I inquired of him, and said, 'Do you think that Missions have done much good in the South Seas?' He looked at me, and said, 'I do not know what you think about Missions, 'but I will tell you a fact. Last year I was wreckcd on one of those Islands, and 1 knew that eight years before, an American Whaler had lieth shipwrecked on that island that the crtiW had been murdered nnd no doubt you forty jtidge my feelings, when wo anticipated that we cither should be dashed to pieces on the rocks during the night, or if wo survived to the morning, subjected to a dreadful death. As soon as the day brdke, I saw a number of canoes, manned, pulling away between the island nnd the ship. We prepared for the worst consequences. Judge of our amazement when the natives came on board in a European dress, and spoke to Us in English. In that vefy island I heard the gospel on the Sabbath day, and sat down at the communion tablo and sang the same psalm that I sang in Scotland.' lie added, 'I do not know what you think of Missions, but I know what I think of them."

A MrsTKRY.—The Buffalo Democracy aays that on Friday morning, about 7 o'clock, there was taken from the stench trap, on the corner of Main and Seneca street, in that city, a human hand, cut from the arm at the wrist. The hand was small and delicate, evidently that of a woman, and appeared to have bsen in water for tome time, Its the flesh was much decomposed. The «tory of this hand, and to whom it one© belonged, are of course mystery, not to be cleared up prhaps till tho day when all things shall be made plain.

SURTTPTNQ IN TUK MooNLu.ur.—A young man belonging to tbe second Illinois regiment, stationed at Tampieo, lay down »n front of his tent, perfectly well, with the moon shining full in his face, and having been on guard the night before, slept soundly until morning. When be attempted to rise he was nearly blind, his checks were puffed ont twice their usual sixe, his •yes were nearlv closed, and surrounded with circles of almost jet black, presenting a terrible sight.—Jtarkt'-»i.

jpn I I.ADEl.PH 1A MEDIC A I, HOUSE—KstaWish-

cd 20 years ago by Or. Kinkelin, corner of Third and Union sts. between Spruce and I'ins Pliila., Ha. lsv*.t,zi« are apprised that Or. Kinkelin contlncs his practice to a parttcnlarbranch of medicine, which engages his undivided attention. Ho cautions the unforttniafe against the abuse of mercury thousands are anniuiHy mercurialised out of life. Kecent affections are promptly extinguished.

WE NTS' V15AR3 OF EXPEKTENCE

In the treatment of a,class ofdiseases hitherto neglected and imperfectly understood, has enabled Ur. Kinkelin, (Author of a work ou Self Preservation,) to prove that nine-tenths of the causes of nernous debility, local and constitutional weakness, mental and Physical suffering, are traceable to certairt habits, orming the most secret yet deadly and fatal spriugs or domestic misery and premature mortality.

TAKE PARTtCULAR NOTICE.

There is an ovil habit sometimes indulged in byboys, iu solitude, often groWin^ up with them to manhood, and which, if not reformed in due time, not only bojjo'ts serious obstacle* to mttrimonial happiness, but gives rise to a series of protracted, insidious, ajid devastating affections, Few of those who give way to this pernicious practice are unaware of the consequences, until they find thenervons system shattered, fool strange and unaccountable ladings, aud vague fears in tbe miuil.

The unfortunate thus affected bccomes feeble, is unablo to labor with accustomed vigor, or to apply his mind to study his step is tnrdy and woak, he is dull, 'rresolute, and engages iu his sport with less energy than usual.

If he emancipate himself before the practice has done its worst, aud ontor matrimony, his marriage is unfruitful, and his »en*s tells him that this is caused by bis early follies.

These are can-siilerations which

should awaken thcaUcntion of thast similarly situated« MAimiACSK Requires the fulfilment of several condit ions, in order that it mr.y be really the cause of mntuat happiness, 'ould the veil which covers the {•irigin of domestic wretchedness be raised, and its true source in every nstanco disclosed—iu how many could it bo traced to physical 'disqualifications and their attendant disappointments! Apply thcH while it isyot time, in order to Have your iwmniiij and relaxed organization tiraccd, revi viiled and strengthened.

KKMKMIJER

lie who places himself under Or. Kinkelin'# treatment may religiously confide in his honor as a gentleman, and rely upon the assurance, that tlio secrets of Or. K's. patients willnever be disclosed.

Young man—let no false modesty deter you from making your case known to One who, from education and respectability, can certainly befriend you.

Too many think they will conceal the sncrct in their own hearts, and cure themselves. Alas! how often is this a fatal delusion, and how many a promising young man. who might have been an ornament to society, has faded from the earth.

Strictures of the nretha are rapidly removed by the application of a new therapeutical agent, used only by Dr. K. Weakness and constitutional debility promptly cured, and full vigor restored.
