On Wednesday afternoon, a little girl rinrrml Sennit a I'reiilice, six years old, who lives with Robert Getty, on Edgar's tarm. east of the Asylum, fell into a well on the premises sixty feet deep. She was probably playing irtfiile of the curb, and slip, ped off. The bucket was up at the time leaving the passage unobstructed from the mouth of the well to the top of the water in it. The water was six leet deep, and the distance to it. as measured yesterday. 'vas lifty-four feet. This distance the little girl fell, passing through the water to the bottom the latter fact being proved by the great, quantity of sand in her hair when she was dra\Vn up, and by her own expressions in regard to her descent. When she rose to the surface of the water she sustained herself by clinging to the walls, ^immediately crying, "Pull me up," so

as to be heard by Mrs. Getty, the only person at home. The lady, upon running to the well and discovering the child's position, lowered the bucket and Hold the little creature to get in but no persuasion could induce her to do as diirectedr Reaching as high up the rope as she could, she took hold of it, and the laly began to draw her up. When about half the distance, but not half the danger had been passed, the chil said she eould'nt hold—she must fall but the nsbuianee from above that it would be certain death to let go, nerved her for a last eflort, and lightning her childish gr.is-p with the strength of despair, up she came to the top, her'nead sinking down as if life
Iwui left lier. In an hour afterwards she was "as lively as cricket"—unhurt even to the extent of a scratch on her person!
The presence of mind exhibited by Mrs. CJetty was only less extraordinary than the Courage of the little girl. The escape of the latter from death is a perfect marvel. She learned a lesson, however, that she will never forget, and we will slate it in her own language, for the benefit of other Jittle people: "You always told me," ^*mid she to Mrs. Getty, "that I'd full in the well, but 1 couldn't believe you. Ancc4»te of JTokn Adams John Adams when be wps President of ihe CJoited States.was most grossly insulted by one Matthew Lyon, a representative-in Congress from Vermont. Lyon was.'as we all' know, a most consummate blackguard, and the first of the race that then found their way to Congress, though the breed has most signally increased within the last half century. T*
Lyon affirmed with an oath that he "hated President Adams and was often beard to say that if he eould only give him one ^ood tweak of the no*e, be would "die sat* isfjed. "Mr. Adams was very fond of
walking and it was well known that'he al? most every morning walked for exercise, from the Presidential mansion to Georgetown bridge-—a distance of two or two and I hrttf unlet.* Giffe mohltng. iaathe fnonth of Jane, 1799, a» Adams was taking his usual stroll, he was met by Lyon^ whp thus accosted him: "You are the President of the United States. I understandf" 'My name sir," replied the President, "is John Adams. I am a native of Braintree, Massachusetts—and the people of the United States have elected me to the office of Chief Executive of the Union^ ^1 am, sir, very much at your scrvice!"
Lyon, who was a .stalwart man, of unusually irasible temperament, was rather taken aback by the cool ai.d determined manner of the President, and at first hesitated to procced, but at length.summoning all his native^recklessness to hi* aid, drew himself into a hostile attitude, and rudely vociferated-
Well, sir," I am Matthew Lyon,"ft representative from the State of Vermont and it becomes me lo tell vou,$ir, thatyouare no gentleman!'
iMie question of my ijentility, sir," returned Mr. Adams, "is one that others Uian myself must discuss, but let me tell you, *ir. tluit I suffer no no man to insult me with impunity, whether I be John Adams of Br iin:ree, or John Adams, President of the United States!" "Sir, you Rre a puppy!" screamed Lyon and it is /that tells ye so!"
At the instant, Mr Adams, who, in following the fashion of the times, carried.or more, a long and a very heavy gold-head-ed cane, raised il above his head, and letting it fall with the weight of a Sampson, aid Lyon low at his feet.
This incident, which was related to us a few days ago. by an aged gentleman who witnessed it, is recorded most faithfully and elaborately in "Holmes* Personal Journal of the last Century and a Half."

WAS'THK DEMOCRATIC PARTY'TN INDIANA IN KAVORT OF THE VV 1L.MOT PROVISO IN 1 8-10? The last number of the Democratic Platform informs ns that in 1049, Hon. Dale Owen addressed a loiter to the Indiana Legislature, as a candidate for United Stales Senator, inAvhich he declared, in so many words, that he would vote against die Wilmot Proviso, if elected. We have heretofore shown that 0»ov. Whitconib wrote a letter to the same body, declaring himself in favor of extending (lie principles of the Wilmot Proviso to all our territory newly ncquired fr'oiYi Mexico. Gov. Whitcomb was elected United States Senator, receiving nearly every democratic vote ill the Legislature, while Robt. Dale Owen had scarcely any strength at all.— Does not this fact clearly show that the democratic party of this State were the anti-Slavery or Wilmot Proviso party, as ale as 1049 ?—Xtw Mlmwj Tribune.
Cuiuors CASK.—The coroner yesterday held nil inquest on the body of a child named Julia Engel, a^jed five days, (bund lead at the house ol its parents in the Third District. The jury, after hearing ihe evidence, returned a verdict of "death from convulsions, caused by its mother having been greatly lightened, ami her breast milk thus poisoned, by her husband." The husband, whose name is Theophile Kngel, and who is a notorious character, il appears, had assaulted and brutally treated his wife, threatening to kill her, and all that sort of thin^ the fright idle experienced from these threats, the physician who examined the child stated, had operated as a poison on her milk, which being imbibed by the child, convulsions and death ensned. On the strength of this verdict. Engel has been arrested arid waits an exiimiuation on a charge of having caused the death of his own child. The mother, too, is not expected to live. —X. 0. From A. n'oodtrnrd, M. /?., of PCHV. Uni*er*itg, Philadelphia.—It gives mo pleasure to add my testimony to the professional ability of the Autliot of the 'Medical Manual."
