of the Royal Society, he questioned him as to his right to those initials. "Sir," said the fellow, "I am intitled to them as Major Drummer to the Fusileers of the

occasion to sign bis name to some article in a. copopany which embraced several Doctors, stuck down, at the end of his sig

Goto IN OREGON.—Rich gold mines exist on Yakima liver, Oregon, about one hundred miles from the Dalles of the Co

lumbia, in a region inhabited by Indians, who hitherto have used their utmost efforts to prevent the white pcoplo from ex

amining it. It has long been known that gold exists there, and three ^'cars ago some of the gold dust obtained at the pla

cers was carried to Portland by an Indian, who said that tbe chief would not let the whites hunt for it, as they would

seize their lands and drive them off. Now, however, considerable quantities of gold are being taken oul of the mines by some parties who have spent the winter there. Those who have traversed the country say that it bears all the appearances of a gold region for a great extent. The Yakima river heads near the Cascade mountains

This scene prosents itself right on the pathside. Keeping oncli other within hearing distancehowover, by the cry of "Michigan," we extricate ourselves, and, quickly pushing ahead, resume our way. upon the muzzle, when the gun slipped, and the hammer came in contact with the stone with such force as to cause the caps to explode, and.a discharge of the contents

of both barrels to follow, which shattered his arm to pieces and entered his head just

under the chin, literally tearing it to pieces. Such accidents are most suggestive of

caution to sportsmen.

GREAT MEN'S DANCING.—We read that Napoleon was a very awkward dancer. On one occasion he danced with a very beautiful countess, who could not conceal her blushes at his ridiculous postures.— "The fact is, madam, that my forte lies not so much in dancing mysel! as in making others dance." This reminds us of an anecdote of Daniel Webster who being present at a ball in Washington, during the period of his incumbency as Secretary of State, was asked by an effeminate foppish sort of a chap, who thought a good deal of his dancing. "Dont you dance Mr. Webster? I never see you dance." "No," said Mr. "Webster, as he only could say and look, such things. "I never had the capacity to learn how, sir."—Exch.

This reminds us of dancing fiddler, who was once exhibiting, as a musician, to king Antigonas. The king, every now and then interrupted the man with "Tighten venr lower string" "Tighten your

middle string" till finally the fiddler turned coolly to him and said, "May your majesty never be so unfortunate as to be

a better fiddler than I."

TROUBLE AT WASHINGTON.—The gossiping correspondent of the N. Y. Herald

makes the following remarks on supposed

troubles in tho Cabinet at Washington.— We give them for what they are worth: "There are rumors again of trouble with Marcy on the Cuba question He holds back, while Cushing and Davis are pushing forward. They are crowding Marcy hard. He may be crowded oul in which event, perhaps. Mr. Charles O'Connor will probably take Cushing's place as Attorney General, while Cushing may be advanced into the State Department.— He is after it. any how. in full cry. It is thought, too, that O'Connor has been retained in office with a view of lifting him higher, and for the purpose of patching up a reconciliation with the" hards, for it is suspected that Marcy intends to carry .off the softs upon a Presidential cruise of his own. They are not going to have all 1 he fun in Europe. The times here are big with stirring events. fe about eight months ffone at that.

The building is on the corner of Broadway and Ann streets, and is seven stories high. It contains seven large halls, each one of which is a perfect Museum. The ground floor and apart of the first floor is occupied with the Chinese Museum, whjch, a few years ago, attracted so much attention in different cities, and was afterwards purchased for the American Museum. There are figures of the size of life representing the dress, habits and modes of life of the different classes, from those highest in Authority to the humblest artizan and day laborer, in tho Celestial Empire, arid there are also representations of the manner of inflicting the different punishments on the various classes of offenders. Those who nre fond of wax figures, will find a great variety of them here. There is a largo collection of stuffed animals—and that of birds here found cannot be surpassed in beauty#r variety.. The conchological and mincralogical cabinets arc extensive—and any quantity of curiosities from all parts of the world here seen. The upper story contains among other things, a laf^o cage in which lives the "Happy Family," consisting of animals of opposite natures dwelling together in unity. Thecat and dog play quietly together, and the rat fears no molestation from tho cat., and monkies, owls, pigeons, crows, rabbits and mice live happily together.

In addition to all this entertainments are given in the Exhibition Room twice each day by the excellent Stock Company connected willi the Museum. The Moral Drama prevails, and on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, about 5 o'clock may be seen crowds of children coming from the building whose happy faces testify to the pleasure they have received from the performances. Every thing is conducted decently and in order. Tho hours kept are good, and the evening entertainment is concluded at 10 o'clock.

The Boston riot is a general topic of conversation. Every body regrets the occasion but the soberer part think that so long as the law is as it is, its provisions must be obeyed. On Saturday, three negroes were sent off from this city. So quietly were all (he arrangements made that that there was no opportunity to occasion delay in the proceedings by arguments of counsel. Had news of the application to the Commissioner here, been generally known, we might have witnessed, at least, an attempt at rescue.
