New R«i« mi Ayplriar Brake®.
A few
ton and
days Ago, a large number of gen
tlemen assembled at the depot of tbe Bos
Worcester Railroad, for tbe par-
pose of witnessing ekpetUbeiits with a net} rail car brake operator, which is describ
ed thus: Tbe improvement consists in the application of a powerful spring to the work of taming the brakes instead of by hand as •heretofore. The spring is contained in a square box at the top of the car, from which a shaft runs down and connects with the brakes beneath the car. A wire chain runs along the top of all the cars, and connects with every' box. so that the engineer by pulling the-end of the wire, can remote the check from every spring at the «ame moment, allowing the springs to operate and stop the train. The springs have to be wound up with a few turns of a lever before every operation, but this is bat the work of a moment. At a given signal, while a train, consisting ot five cars was going at a rate of thirty-ff^e miles an hour, the engineer, it is said, sounded his whistle and put on his brake, which, according to the watches of several gentlemen, completely stopped the train in eight or nine seconds from the time the signal Was given, and before the train had gone ovei'eight feet more than its length. Another experiment was then tried, in which the rear car was suddenly disconnected from the train, by raising the coupling and inclosing the wire above. The brakeman on the last car set the spring in motion, and stopped the car so suddenly as to almost throw off several operators who were standing on. its platform, while the train passed ahead. The wire chain is coupled between every car, but if a car should accidentally break loose from the rear, the jerk upon the wire would operate the brakes without further intervention, and slop all the cars.
The Dayton Gazette gives an account of a rich ''sell" which came off recently in ttic vicinity of Greenville. A young man who called himself Crittenden, and stated that he was a nephew of J. J. Crittenden, of Kentucky, pretended to be agent for the Kentucky Stock Importing Company, and stated that he Had in view the introduction of finer breeds of stock into Darke county than had usually been patronised in that region. lie ''wan a great swell," Attted the rich prodigal to perfection, and was Uhiuiuiioasly voted to be several large pumpkikjsi He was about to introduce into Darke cdtlVHy an unlimited number of flat-tailed sheep and short-horned cattle. Having completed arrangements with several county dignitaries to board, stable, and superintend the stock which lie announced to be en route for Dayton, where he expected to meet his stock and hurry it forward. Nothing has been heard of him since, but it has leaked out that he had borrowed several "trifles" of "a hundred or so." There was a great laugh at those who were taken in. A sheep with a "flat tail," composed of several pounds of cotton, and a short-horned bull, duly inset ibed, were paraded about town, much to the annoyance of the "sucked."—Lou.

The Washington Star, one of the regular organs of the administration, speaking of Some absent member? of Congress says that they will probably return in the course of the current week "reinvigorated.for the real woi'k of the session which must soon be commenced in earnest."
That's very consoling certainly. Our Locofoco Congress has already been in session nearly five months, and the administration's organ thinks there is a strong probability that its work will pretty soon begin in earnest. So we may hope that it takes a Locofoco Congress only about half a year to get to work in earnest. It has from the first however, been at work in earnest in drawing money from the treasury.— Lou. This wonderful medicine, during the brief period ainee Its Introduction, lias carried happiness to the hearts of thousands, and made lire a charm to man/ who heretofore regarded it only a painful and miserable existence.
To the winds with *11 Liniments, Kmbrocations, 1'aln Killers and Tain Extractors, and let millions of glad tongues proclaim the merftj of the great American King of Pain," a preparation composed solely of vegetables and roots, produced by America's own rieh and bounteous soil.
We would ask tho LACKS, who are always competent vt la and what is not a valuable family medicine, to do us a special favor by giving ttra K|n(.r Pain a single trial, and if satisfoctory, exert their Influence in its behalf, recommend It, speak well and often of it. and see that it is used by their afflicted neighbors. The Ladles are always charitable, and when they induce their suffering friends to use this really valuable medicine, they will be doing an act of beoevolence that they can well be proud of. l'Uis is a powerful and truly magical remedy for all external diseases, sores, swellings, burns, &0, aud for many Internal afflictions, it a certain care, yet it is perfectly harmless and Incapable of producing the least injurious tffccts In the most delicate cases or the weakest constitution.
It is entirely useless to follow the old aad worn-out system of publishing to tbe public thousands of certificates of wonders performed by this medicine. It co«U but twenty -Bv* cents to try It and Dr. Bull stakes his well-earned reputation on the King of Pain doing all and wore than he claims for it.
