CARDS AND WIS*.

A gay assemblage bad gathered ia the gorgeous halls of Col. Alton, and bis ,! daughter Cora, the beautiful and gifted entertainer, drew forth a card table, and called a merry group around her.' ^•Dayton, don't you play V* she said to one who seemed to be no careless observer of her.

A hesitation of indecision was visible for an instaHt, and then he unswemd, "No!" ''Well, play just once. I assure you the amusement is perfectly innocent."

driven me? To poverty, to murder, to su

icide. At first, I played for excitement, and then to keep you from starvation find when my money and my credit were gone, and tauntingly I was told it. I sent one guilty as myself to his account, and by his blow I likewise die. 0o not grieve so, Cora you thought no harm—but 0! atone for this by warnings to the young." His hand relaxed its icy clasp, and he was dead.

Again my scene is gaiety. "Pledge me. Alice, pledge me!" With hand, she raised the sparkling cup, and bowed her head, and thus her silvery voice rang out, "I pledge your happiness, Darwin—I kiss the ruby wine —drink, and be happy forever!" She wielded a mighty scepter then. lie drank, again he drank. He had her sanction—he asked no more. She had a rival soon—a powerful rival— that rival, wine. And on his dying bed. he lies tormented by blood-freezing sights. *•0! Alice, see that serpent's slimy folds!" —and to his distorted face lie drew his weeping wife, whispered starilingly, "0! Alice, kiss the ruby wine, and pledge my happiness forever! 0! will you not be quick?—he comes I feel his scorching breath, I feel his deadly fangs!" He struggled madly—gasped—and died.

Young women, it ts real life I picture. Will you take warning/ ROSE HULLL.

The Baltimore Times, which has been a warm friend to the Iniquity Bill, has the following remarks upon its defeat:.. "Tho only chanro for the Administration ia to have the bill taken up out of order. To do this is difficult work. The Union, this morning, i.t an silent, as ilio grave. The Intelligencer in dumb with axtonUlnnent at it* unexpected success. The Sentinel, in its rage, tures upon the Union, the official scape goat. According to our correspondent, the cabinet are disgusted and dejected. The patronage being all gone, there nro no mean-t of bribery left to employ on the House. The bill cannot be resuscitated. It is dead.

The next thing for the Administration is to divert public attention and turn the stream of national excitement into some new channel.— A war with Spain, in regard to the Black War rior affair, is the only opportunity. The acquisition of Cuba by a tender of purchase, backed by the cannon, would pruve popular and save the cabinet. Sumo bold stroke like this must be resorted to, or the Administration will have to breast the storm which they have raisod. without, the adequate power of re xistance. The President hits acted most nobly throughout, the whole Nebraska question. He relied too much on party organization. He lias been deserted at, the very time he most needed devotion. He is now thrown upon his own resource*. He is surrounded by tho-jo circumstances which try men's souls. WB will we how lie comes out.

©ISASTKKS ox oim AVisriax UIVKIIS.—Tho St. Louis Evening News says that during the two months of January and February, twetny-three steamers were sunk, burnt, or blown tip on the Mississippi river and its tributaries, and two destroyed by fire ou the Savannah—involving the loss of near two hundred lives, and more than a million dollars worth of property. The records of the present month will greatly swell this fearful list of mortality. Within the last few days we have received accounts of the loss of the steamers Caroline and J. L. Avery upon the Mississippi, and the Reindeer upon the Ohio river—hurrying, in all, one hundred and fifty human souls without warning or preparation into eternity*

JIT Conittcted with tho vote which killed the Nebraska Bill in the house, nro some facts worth remembering. Of the Indiana delegation, Chamberlain, Eddy, Harlan, Lane, Mace and Parker voted against the bill and Davis, Dunham, English, Hendricks, and Miller, for it.

From the free States, 54 democrats voted against the bill. Nor OSE WHIG from the free States voted for Jt. Of tho large New York Delegation, o»iy OMC vote was given for it, and that was Miitl Walsh! From Missouri (fate name of Bcxtos alone stands recorded agairist the bill.

The latest news from California, brought by the steamer Northern Light, which arrive# at New York on the 35th iust., is as follows:

This wonderful medicine, during the brief period since its introduction, has currivd happinrss to the hearts of thousands, and made life a charm to mf/aj who heretofore regarded it only as a pninful and miserable cxUtonce.

To the winds with it 11 l.inimcnts, Embrocations. Pain Killers and t'ain ICxtrartor.i, and let million* of glad tongues proclaim the merits of the great ''American King of l'ain," it preparation co nposed solely of vegetables'and roots, produced by America's own rich aud bounteous soil.

We would ask tho I.ADIKS, who are always competent judges of what is and what 3 not a valuable fauiily medicine, to do u.i a special fuvor by giving the King of Pain a single trial, and if satisfactory, oxert their influence in its behalf, recommend it, upenk well and often of it, and see that it is used by their afflicted neighbors. 1 Tho Ladies are always charitable, and wheu they induce their Huffering frieuds to use this really valuable medicine, they will be doing nn net of benevolence that they can well be proud of. This is a powerful and truly magical remedy for all external diseases, sores, swellings, burns, 4c and for many internal afflictions, it is a certain cure,, yet it is perfectly harmless and incapable of producing the least injurious effects in the most delicate case* ortho weakest constitution.

It is entirely useless to follow the old and worn-out system of publishing to the public thousands of certificates of wonders performed by this mediciuc It costs but twenty-live cents to try it aud Dr. llull stakes his well-earned reputation ou the King of Paio doing all an4 wore than he claims for it.
