Wolvh8.—Tlie

wolves of Maine seem

to he numerous and remarkably fierce the present season, A correspondent of the Machins Union says that the accommoclatiun stn^e and passengers from Rockland were a few days since driven back from the woods near India river and detained over night, by a large detachment of wolves. The Brunswick Telegraph relates that on Friday hist Col. Campbell, of that town, was chased by a pack of wolves while in the woods not half 11 mile from his house. Four of them came within twenty feet of him, whereupon he turned at bay armed with an axe and his adversaries, nfler some rcconnoitering and a few low growls of disapprobation, concluded to furego their antieipaed breakfast, and beat a relucUm! retreat.

ID* Tt will be recollected that some time in September In*t, Martin Kwing was recognized for an assault and battery with intent to kill Judge Moffatt of Terre-Haute. since which time he has been confined in jail. During the pitting of the Court, of Common Pleas now in session in Vigo, nolle prosequi wns entered by the District Attorney at tho earnest solicitation of Judge Mntfattj and the defendant discharged. The long confinement, of the defendant. and sickness while in jail, nnd the extreme poverty of his widowed mother, were the noble motives which prompted Judge M. to decline jVosecuting the case. Few under the very aggravating circumstances, would have acted Tike him. The Judge has a heart, as big as a meeting house.— Tin. Gazette.

Tuk I.vntANs.—Gkn. Lax*—-'Thegovernment troops established in the Rotrue river valley went out to capture some stock nnd other stolen property. They surprised the Indians and shot at and wounded several. They fled to the mountains when th« troops turned homeward, the Indians followed stealthily and tired upon them, killing two soldiers and wounding three more. The succeeding night they came to the soldier's camp and stole all thtar flour and provisions.

Tho whites out there are very much dissatisfied with Gen. Lane. Wo have been told, by a reliable person, just from there, that nearly three fourths of the people denounce him for tlie course he pursued in reference to milking the treaty.—Oregon Spectator.

Errwrrs or Wrong Spkluxo.—Notlong since a gentlrmnn, then a chorister of a certain choir in Vermont, wrote to it publisher in Boston, for a copy of that popular singing book, entitled "The Ancient Juyro.,

In his communication lie used the following language "Hens** send me the Ancient IA«r well The publisher, in answer to his request, replied "3kly Dear Sir—I do not doubt but the deril has teen, and still is, in Boston, bat it will be difficult to comply with your request, for the reason that Boston influences so strongly in his favor, it ill be impossible to bind hiia."

A Curious Scknk in Court.—In the Memphis Common Pleas Court, in Ten* nesseo. few days since, a man named Smith was on trial for murder. After ten jurors had been eropantieled. certain technical objections were started by the counscl for live defence. The judge allied the counsel if they were goinj* to quibble at so late an hour on such a point' An evasire answer was returned. The jndjfe required a direct answer, which the? refused to give. He thereupon ordered a fine of #50 to be entered against each of them. The)' still avoided

a

I

direct answer, and finally

the judge, getting out of patience, ordered the sheriff to conduct them all to jail, and they were taken into custody and removed from the room. v#

/A writer discoursing npon "practical wisdom," uses this figure: "In journeying with it we go towards the sun. and the shadow of our burden falls behind us.'*

A despatch from

orders have been sent from Washington to arrest Captain Walker and the band who accompanied him to La Pax.

The present critical state of Euf'opeari Affairs will render these publications UniiSiiully intefesting during the year 1854. They will occupy a middle gronnd between the hastily wfitten news-items, crude speculations, and flying rumors of the daily Journal, and th§ pdnderous Tone of the future historian, written after the living interest and excitement of the great political events of the time shall have passed away. It is to these Periodicals that readers must look for the only really intelligible and reliable history of current events, and as such, in addition to their well established literary, scientific, and theological character, we urge them upon the consideration of the reading public.

Arrangements arc in progress for the receipt tif early sheets from the British Publishers, by which we shall be able to place all our Reprints in the hands of subscribers, about as soon as they can be furnished with the foreign Copies.
