As it biting nommontnry UfX)n this JKJUV slang, we lure copy a feiv lines from iPivMdent John Q. Adnms. one of the purest find loftiest statesman t«J which our country ever ^ave birth, uttered near the close of his long tuid eventful life.— Ileud what he says:

In an experience of more ihan fifty years in the public service. I ha\e never met a man of more exalted irtues. He possesses higher claims upon his country HS a paeilieator than warrior, the lustre of his services iii preserving the peace of the country surpnj-6ing the brilliancy of his military achievements.

Is not this high tribute to the character atid ability of Gen. Scott, coming, as it docs, from the wise and sagacious statesman, worth immeasurably more than all the fulsome testimony that scheming politicians can possibly put forth during! the Presidential canvass

Here, too. in contrast with this charge of silliness, preferred against Gen. Scott, we will quote a few sentences from Gen. Cass. During the administration of President Jackson, ami while Scolt was acting ns confidential agent in the seUlenu nt ot! the nulitication difficulty in South Carolina, lien. Cass, then Secretary of War, in his official instructions, said:

He (President Jackson) has KVLL CONKfDRNCR i« your judgment and discretion. You nre :&l liberty to take such measures as you may think prudent and a just precaution mpt'ire.

In the same year, after the close of the lilack 11 a war and

several important treaties with Western Indians, Gen. Cass thus complimented Gen eral Scott:

Allow me to congratulate von, upon this fortunate consummation of your arduous duties, and to express mv entire approbation of the whole course of your proceedings, during series of difficulties requiring higher moral courage than the operations of an active campaign under ordinary circumstances. lie ad and compare the complimentary language of iben. Cass, used twenty years ago, with the, base and malignant slanders that are now being dissesnianted throughout the country to the injury of Gvn. Scott.

IRON.—Let*

ters have bom rreviwd in this city, from an extensive iron work establishment in Pittsburgh, which statu that the price of iron of all kinds bus advanced, particularly P'g blooms.

From the ruinous rates at which the article has been sold during the past two or three years, many of the blast furnaces, forges and rolling mills, have become iasolvent, and the establishments sold by the Sheriff. Many other*, discouraged by the ruinous and depressed state of ihe trade, stopped operations, and closed up their business in time to save themselves fr\m the siime fate. This condition of things, with the fcyrt that there is. likely to be a "short supply of blooms and pig iron, has caused the advance to which we have alluded. It ia to be hoped that this improvement in price may be permaoei and that it may be the dawn of att auspicious dav for this important branch of industry—a branch in which our State is greatly inter-j t8tc4-—St. Lottit Republican.
