As much as we have always respecied the political character of our egndiitate for the Vice Presidency, we were not prepared to find him, in every sense, so much superior to the ordinary politicians of the day. He is, to begin with, one of the finest looking men in the nation nearly eix feel in height, a perfect model in hi* phyaicaj^ proportions, and his manners, inovemehls, a:id conversation exhibiting that happy anion of dignity and affability which gives assurance to all who coinc in contact with him, that he is every inch a man and a gentleman. We have

"His arm has the strength of the blacksmith's, his walk the freedom of the Indian's, his facc the honesty of the farmer's, his brow the intellect of the scholar, and his manners the polish of a gentleman.— It is to be regretted that the laborious duties of his uflice confine him so closely at home thai the people can have but little opportunity of seeing him. ten remarked by the traveller among the Indian tribes, how degraded and sad is the loi of woman. Ii seems as if she had been crushed and bowed to the earth, in order that man might bo more savage and ferocious. A recent traveller remarks:
As to labor, the bowed down and wrinkled squaw does the whole. She takes ^Iowii the lodgo when it is moved, rolls together the mats, puts them, the kettles and papoose on her n-k. The husband loiters along with his gun. When loaded, slii! looks like a beast of burden, covered with packages under which she is just able to move. When game is killed she goes to the hunting ground for it when they are on a lake or river, she places the nets and takes away the fish. At '2!j she is old, and at 40 ileerepit—she is the most disgusting, the most pitiful object in huitinn form that can be imagined.
