From thl Boston Atlas. Taylor's lioiniiialion.

Never was there a nomination more fairly made than thai of General Taylor. We were present and can speak from observation. It will be said, however, that the South look undue advantages in the Convention, but by whosomever this charge is made or may be made, we challenge him to tht proof. There was uuthing done that was not honorable and above-board. The Convention on every ballot adopted the open, manly, viva voce vote. The constituents of every delegate are therefore aware of how their «lel-eg'-ile voted and for whom he voted. Every Congressional district in every free State, in the Union, was represented with the exception of two in Illinois, while there were ten districts in the slaveholding States, seven in South Carolinia, two in Alabama, and one in Missouri, which were not represented, and therefore had no vote. This simple fact shows that the North, even in proportion toils power, was more fully represented than the South in the Convention, yet the choice fell on General Taylor. There must therefore, have been some other causes than local ones assigned for the choice made and there were and we can give them at Grst, a settled conviction that with the NVhiga as a national party, we must have victory now or never and second, that General Taylor alone of the distinguished candidates brought forward could give us victory. It was believed, find it is believed that while he is as good a "Whig as any in the Union, he combined therewith that indefinable yet necessary element of success, availability that he could draw to his support the great mass of our countrymen with a candidate not possessed of this quality, we could not defeat the Baltimore nomination, anil brejik up the line of succession of the party now in power.

The Adjutant General at Washington, has published officially Gen. Butler's order to the army, dated Mexico, May ^9, 1848, in which the ratification of the treaiy is announced, ami direction given to commence at once the homeward nnrch. Gen. Taylor wrote to Mr. ('lay on tho SOth of April last a Ion? familiar letter, covering four manuscript pages, in which he assured Mr. Clay of his friendship for him, and that, situated as he was, ho could not of himself, without appearing inconsistent, withdraw his nnme from the canvass but if his frionds at the Philadelphia Convention should find that some other man—either Mr. ('lay, Judgo McLean, Mr. Clayton, or any good, capable niul upright citiaen, would be moro likely to bo elected than himself, then it would givo him pleasure to have them withdraw his name, and he would give his hearty support to the nominee. The letter Weathe8 tho true whig spirit, ami shows that Gen.Taylor deems Mr. Clay's friends to be his own friends, and it most effectually puis down the statement that General Taylor has set up for himself, and resolved to be a candidate whether or no.

Mr. Clay wrote back a letter in the ?.amo gootl spirit, assuring the old hero that he entertained none but the kindest I feelings for him—thai he approved of his political sentimenis, and that, should his name be presented to the people, by the Philadelphia Convention for the Presidency, he would give it his cordial support.

The foil owing letter was addressed by Millard Fillmore, our Whig candidate for the Vice Presidency, to the meeting of the Friends of Ireland, held some weeks since! in New York city. The sentiments containetl therein will find a response in the breast of every lover of freedom, ami every advocate of national enfranchisement:
