the fallowing items from the late arrivals
from Mexico. Tamaulipcts.—The Almosfcra, at San Luis Poinsi, of the 26th January, stales that the Governor of Tamaulipas, D. Francisco Vital Fernandez, has solicited the protection of the Government at Washington, in hi? plan of annexing that State to the United States of the North,
DEATH
OF
SIR:—A
MAJOR WEBSTER.*-We
regret to hear of the death, at San Angel, of Major Edward Webster, of the Massachusetts Regiment ot Volunteers. He was the youngest son of the Hon. Daniel Webster. He left hi* native State a year since as the senior Captain in the RegiftiBiit, and was subsequently chosen to dlie post which he held at the time of his .death. He dtd more than nny other man towards the organization of the Regiment, and was eminently popular. His death will carry a pang to many a heart.
MORE RUMORS.-The
Jay says it has good authority lor stating that an express from the American com-mander-in-chief had left for Queretaro, to ihe effect that if a treaty of peace were not concluded within three days, the American troops would proceed to ocotipy other pjoints in the Republic. We give the rumor for what it is worth. Tbe Monitor probably h»s its information from Mexican sources.

There arc strong and e&eient garrisons at Fuebla, Perote, Jala pa, and at Vet* Crux. The 9d Ohio Regiment is at Rio Frio.
This, in brief, is the present disposition of the troop* tit occupation. They are all within supporting distance of each other, apd they will see that the revenues and rents, ordered by the* American government to be paid over to its representatives here, are collected and disposed of for tbe benefit of the Army. This is the policy to bo pursued, until* Mexico sues for peace, and a treaty is negotiated between the two government*.
We will only add, that oar letters from the different stations represent the health ot the officers aud men as being good.

The Peytona has arrived from New Orleans bringing dates to the evening of the 17th inst.
The Delta contains the correspondence of Gens. Scott and Worth relative to the late difficulties in the Army subsequent to the publication of the Army orders censuring severely the authors of certain letters written to the United Slates.
Gen. Worth addressed a note to Gen, Scott, stating that he learned with aalonishment thai it was the opinion of the army the imputation of scandalous conduct mentioned in the general order referred to him, and asking if such was the intention of the commander-in-chief.
General Scott replied that the order clearly expressed thai he meant to apply the imputation to the author of the letter signed "Leonidas."
Gen. Worth rejoined, and said he did not consider the answer satisfactory. Gen. Scott replied that he could not be more explicit. He had nothing to do
Monitor of yesler- jwfth the suspicions of others, and if he
had valid information of the authorship he would prosecute the parties before a Court Martial.
Gen. Worth replied that he snpposecj the commander regarded him as not deserving a satisfactory answer, and feeling himself aggrieved, hp should appeal to the President. He concluded by accusing Scott of apting in a manner unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.
Gen. Scott then ordered Worth under arrest for behaving with contempt and disrespect towards the commander-in-chief,
