Among the great improvements of ihc present day, none is more prominent, or engages more of the public attention, tliati Railways traversed by locomotive power. In (ireat Britain, France, Belgium, and throughout Germany, railroads are building, or already built, upon the most important commercial thoroughfares. They have been, extended into Asia and the last report from the city of Mexico informs us that a railroad meeting has already been held, and the project vigorously urged of constructing a railroad from that city 10 Vera Cruz.
In the United Stales, railroads are in progress from Maine to Louisiana. In Massachusetts alone, fifteen hundred miles of railroad are completed, upon which nearly forty millions of dollars have been expended. They are all profitable, yield a handsome interest on the money •invested in ihem and also promote a degree of prosperity amongst merchants, farmers, mechanics, and men in every employment, that was never experienced before. This enterprise has extended and lias been successfully adopted in twenty States of the Union. Georgia, notwithstanding her forbidding hills and barren Bands, has constructed six hundred miles of railroad, and is already pushing them into the southern borders of Tennessee.
Ohio is successfully engaged in building railroads, and Indiana isTully awake to the importance and utility of such enterprises. 'In Illinois we are beginning to move in this matter, and shall endeavor not to be out stripped by our neighbors in airy ju
