s^Tlie Advantages of :i "Religious fe Expression." I A lively correspondent of '.lie New York
Mirror, writing from Rome, gives us lh« following sketch of a character he met there "Every American artist that comes here Bends home a dozen or two of portraits of the beggars in the character of A pontics, or Virgin Marys. A sturdy old fellow who blacks my boots, tells me that he has been painted twenty-eight limes in the character of Saint Paul, thirteen times as Joseph, nine limes as Saint Peter—he cannot r^memb^r how many limes as tlv* "Roman Father,'' and as "the Head nf an Old Man." at least a thonsmd times. One would think that from assuming these chancier*
m)
often, he would
have attained to uncommon sanr-iiiy, but he is in truth, the greatest rogue 1 have seen in Italv.
The rascal prides himself a good deal on being sent so often to Am-rica. and the other day he told me that he believed there was not a gentleman's parlor in my country in which he or one of his family was not hung up in a gill frame. He taid to me yesterday. "my son and daughter have j»fi been sent to America again, one as "a Peasant Boy of the campaena," and the other as "a Roman Lidy." Having delected him that week inan attempt to secrete one of my pocket handkerchiefs, to show his contrition, he said he ami his daughter, (who is quite as great a thief as her lather) "would sit to one of my artist-countrymen for a holy family. if 1 would promise not to expose him. "A precious pair vnu are. to be sure, for a Holy Family." said I. Whv, Signor." said the rogue, "my religious expression is worth, two cents an hour more than that of any other man in Rome"
The following most excellent little article, which we copy from the Boston Olive Branch, does honor to the head and heatt of the writer, and will prove instructive and useful to every reader.
Occupation.
BY D. C. COLESWOTHV.
It is not the business or occupation of a rnnu that ennobles his character. A bal man elevated is the same scoundrel, only he has it in his power to do a larger amount of injury. There is a foolish iilca afloat, that occupation makes the man. Nothing can be more absurd. Virtue, honor and integrity are the same in the boot-black as in the judge. The honest man who peddles snuff, jack knives and guu flintB, ia as much entitled to our respect, as he whose vessels whiten the ocean. The right doctrine is this antiquated though it may be—"man ennobles his business. Fathers sadly miss it, when they hesitate to giv« trades to their sons, and crowd them into the professions—as though a poor lawyer was more respectable than a good shoe black, carpenter or painterYoung ladies, too, show their lack of sense, when they turn away from hones*, worth, because it is concealed beneath tar or chalk, smut or ashes, and take to their bosoms men of the'learned professions,' who have not learned to behave decently, or to earn butter •uflicient for the bread they inako way with.
An honest, upright man—wo care not how rude hi* exterior may be—is an honor to hi* occupation. Mia industry ami integrity will work out for him independence and honor. YVIiorp we rend or know of one professional man, who linn distinguished himself, we can point to scores of mechanics, merchants and day-laboreis, who Itavo risen in defiance of th# impediment* by which their early life win surrounded, to an elevated position in the hearts of mankind. Persons who have exerted the widest and best influence in our country, were either mechanics or farmers. If you believe it not, read the history of the Inst seventy years—nay, read the present history ot our country, and you will doubt no longer.
Tho Cincinnati Chronicle tlnis notices the overwhelming vote of tho House of Representatives declaring, in opposition to the late Veto Message the power of the Government to construct harbors and improve rivers:

vote
of the Houso of Representatives on Wentworth's resolution declaring the power ol Congress to construct harbors ami improve rivers is the most important political movement, in some respects, we have seen for twenty years. 1. It is a declaration of Independence on tho port of the West. We are free now, and wo will remain free. Let men
mark that! 2. The House of Representatives has rebuked the despotic prerogative of the veto, and the President must abide by the decision. 3. It will secure some practical legislation for the West, if not now, very

They do not always come out Tifcht, for last night one of our men was subbed at the theatre, and the 2d dragoons turned outand killed about twenty Mexicans belore the* could be stopped. This is the state of things in the city at the present time. ...
To let you know how battle and sickness ha*« thinned the army, now in Mexico city, 1 will slate one instance of my own company, which consisted of ninety-fire good men when we started from Toledo, but it is now reduced to about sixteen men for duty, the remainder being cither iu the hospital or dead.

As might be expected, tho performances ate witnessed by hundreds of ladies and children daily.
Bcswrror Advertising.—The Pittsburg Day Book, tells of a firm in that city, who, after willing up their accounts for the past! year, found that their lost amounted to oter ten thousand dollars, and they were forced to close. Their business was conducted on the strictest principle* of economy—they etren denied themselves the benefit of advertising. _____________
TbOtt&A.—The Legislature hare adopted the proposed amendments to the State Constitution providing for (tautol aestions of the General Assembly, and one year's pittance aa- the suffrage qualification. They are now a part and parcel of the Constitution.

Mr A. L. Miss Beit, step daughter of Mr. John Carr of this city, a Miss Barger, sister-in-law of Mr. V. Wuntlar, butchet, and Mr. R. K. Cox. one of our City Council, tlMl DR. ROGERS' COMPOUND SYdt'P OF LIVERWORT AND TAR operated more LIKE a SPECIFIC, than any remedy of a similar kind in its operation that I have ever used in my practice. One of tho casesabove, viz. Miss Belt, appeared to be laboring under the LAST STAGE OF SCROFULOUS CONSUMPTION, as proliounced by several PHYSICIANS whowere in attendance previous to my being called to treat the case. She is at this present time in the enjoyment of as apparently good health, and from appearance, as likely to die with any other disease, as any othea young lady of this city. As it respects the health of the other cases, all the premonitory symptoms seem lo have subsided from the use of a few bottles of the syrup above.

Ann Childs, Sixth street, two doors west of Synith, says that she had the Consumption, and was reduced to a mere skeleton, and her cough was so distressing, thatch under the care of a Professor in Cincinnati College, who failed to give any relief, yet this medicine gave immediate relief, and restored her lo perfect health. Mr. Gtbriel Whitehead, Catharine street half a square below I.inn, certifies that he was given up by ALL his FR1EKDS and PHYSICIANS, and had raised even QUARTS of MATTER and BLOOD from his LUNGS and this Medicine cured him entirely in a very short time. Mr. H. Judge WM BURKE, late POST MASTER of Cincinnati for twenty years, says that Mr. Finch's statements are entitled to full confidence, and that he fully corroborates what he has said,by his own experience in using it. The WIFE of the Rev. G. W. Mrs ltowe, of Stanton Ohio, says that she was so far cone with CONSUMPTION, that her Doctor said sho could not live BUT ONE DAY LONGER, and that this valuable SYRUP CURED llEll ENTIRELY. Dr. WILSON, of Galiopnlis, states that his patient, tho Rev. H. WISEMAN'S WIFE, wns worn out with Pulmonary Consumption for many years, and his remedies failed to cure, yet DR. many persons put off from time to time, that most important calling—attending to their health before it be too late. Look around us, particularly in our city, and we will daily behold hundreds of persons, whose countenances bespeak suffering, with Disease of the Lungs, and a protracted cough, fast approaching their immortal destinations, without, perhaps, being sensible of their serious situations. undersigned, thankful for the very liberal patronage he has received, and anxious lo merit nnd receive further favors, would oay that he is still manufacturing Wagons, Carts, Dray*, and all kinds of heavy vehicles at nhort notice, and ol the vrry best materials the country can furnish— and his workmanship where known will speak for itself, and as it is the way he makes his living, he cannot afford to do bad work and use bad materials. Having been raised to tho business of Blacksmithing, and depending on it for a support, I am always willing to work for any thing I agree to
take,
whether "calicoes or ribbons" or otherwise, and my work shall equal that of the biggest blovser of the State. I have not thoughtof stopping to suspect or publish what others might or might not do, believing in the maxim, that the guilty too often cry "stop thief"! to direct attention from themselves, and knowing that "gaudy paint" is as creditable as a "whited sepulchre."
I shall act upon the sauxnK with the farmer, mechanic, or merchant alike, and I promise them all, that when they bring me good stock, it shall not he changed in my shop for a worse article. Please call at the sign of "the man shoeing a horse'' two squares south of the TWO srixxise WHEELS, and near the market-house.

Sir: You will please ac
cept these lines from one who has been spared from the famishing fangs of CONSUMPTION, by the timely use of your inestimable EXPECTORANT REMEDY. I had a call in your city in November last, during a severe cold and damp spell which caused me to take a bad cold, attended with some fever. My throat became sore cough dry hard and obstinate, without scarcely any expectoration, pain and soreness in my breast at length sweating at night commenced, with much weakness and debility. During this time I used many medicines, severr,! being highly recommended in the papers, but they all tended to increase my sufferings, by binding up my system, and only giving temporary relief to my cough. Finding that my disease was assuming a serious and dangerous character, I began to ho alarmed, and took the advice of one of our best Physicians. who at once recommended your "EXPECTORANT REMEDY"," and advised mo to procure 6 bottles. I at oncosent toyour Cincinnati Office for them, and commenced using the medicine as soon as recieved. I fancied it gave me relief the first day. On the second day my cough felt much easier, and I began to throw up large quantities of phlegm and matter. On the sixth day my cough disappeared—my strength gradually incrersed. and ol this present time am tiuly happy to state to you that I am rendered sound in health, and attend tn my occupation ns usual.
