The Portsmouth anchored oT the port on the J5th October, and the Congress and Argo the next day. On the 18th, the Argo anchored betwean the islands of Alitiagre (irande and Almagre Clnco. A mortar was planted during the day upon each island. A small boat was then put off from the Argo, bearing Mr. William Robinson, a relative of the consul, and •came off to the town. Robinson was conducted to the govenor and explained to him that tho purpose of the Americans was-tottfke the port, and he advised its

quences. Mr. Robinson also explained jfor
that ho had fallen in with the United Slates squadron in the Argo, off Cape Palmon, and the vessel was made priee s.
At 0 o'clock on the morning of the 20th, the Americans opened their fire from both vessels of war and the two mortars, and continued it for more than an hour. In this time they discharged upon the town over 500 shot, thnong which were many shells. One English resident was killed,
On taking possession of the town. Capt. E. A. T. Lamlette, commander of the U. S. naval force, issued a proclamation to that cfleet.
The Mexican account goes on to say that during the day and part of the night in which the invaders went on hoard, the Americans sacked the town. The night •of the 21st, they disembarked 400 troops "with two pieces of artillery, with a view to protect the embarkation of the proper. ty of John Robinson. They went aboard the following evening without being left to repeat the sacking of the town.
Fortunately, says the Mexican account, the families ofthe town were out of the reach of harm, thanks to the timely pre* •caution taken.

The Mexican commandant replied that the surrender of tho town was out of the question, being incompatible with the honor of the commandant and that of the arms of the Republic. Mr. Robinson theu returned to the Argo. On the 19th the Congress and Portsmouth took up'X ARD Oil just received and for sale by their position to open their fire the town ALLISON Q. was formally summoned to surrender, under pain of being (ired into. The commandant still refused, but the Americans did not open upon it that day. The Mexicans allege that having no heavy artillery to annoy our squadron, the commandant evacuated the town during the night with his troops and took up a position at Bacochibampo, a league from the town, where he had previously placed a battery of fourteen guns to resist the Americans, should they attempt to penetrate the interior.
