€?reof Excitement among tht members of the Legislature— One Case of Small Pox at the Palmer House.
"INDIANAPOLIS, DKC. lfi. 1847.
DkauSi*:
It will be a matter of much sur-
prise to voiffns it is tc every
on" h"r%*
form voii that the Legislature of the State of In«]iana'ha* adjourned until the first Monday February* The cause of this unpiecedented occurrence is precisely as follow*:
Some lour or five days ago, the ruiftor Iwcame picvalent throughout this city, that Andrew Kenneiiy, ex-member of Congre*®, wa« *1 Faimer House aick with the Small Pox. 1 he excitement immediately became very ^greal among the member* of the Legislature—business in both Hou«es in a manner ceased—the minds of the August assembly liecamcs filled with idens of death, pestilence, plnsue, and all the horrors of Egvplian days. Speeches of the most pathetic character were pronounced in a very impressive stylefatherless children, widowed mothers, heart-bro-ken .lovers, and all the affliction that mortality is Ii«-ir to, were portrayed in their gloomiest colors before ihe excited imaginations of all the members. Each one adding fael to ihe fancy of the other, tile excitement noon becHrne so great, that early on yesterday, [Tuesday, the 14th.) the Lower House passed resolution, adjourning the ^Legislature until the first Monday of January, hat resolution being sent to the Senate, was not acted upon until to-day, when it was sent hack to the House, with the amendment—"thst they should adjourn to meet on the first Monday of ebruary —thus placing the "gathering together'' of the unlcrrified Representatives of the dear people one iniinth further off. This amendment being concurred in by the Lower House, the Legislature ol the State of Indiana stands adjourned for near two months, for the simple fact that

The mental excitement that was evinced by majority of the members, while they met in convention fur (lie purpose of again balloting for Canal Trustee, was so great, that the convention adjourned without having elected any one. On the Jnst ballot, R. N. Cartian received 58, and A. M. Puett 60 votes—some lew scattering.
It would have given you a new leaf for study in your history of human affairs, had you been I here and seen the manner in which business was hurried through the House, after they had resolv. ed to adjourn. An innumerable number of Bills were pushed through on reading the titles only,
The Door-Keepers were running in every direction, carrying up papers to the t'lerk—the Clerk kept reading title by title, in a clear loud voice— the Speaker rapped continually, his little mallet on the desk, and cried order! order!! Away in one comer of the house was a member hallowing at the top of his voice, Mr. Speaker! Mr. Speaker!! while on all sides member* were standing up, holding in their hands huge rolls of paper, and crying order! order!! with as much excitement as though an army of Mexicans were surrounding the Capitol with the invincible Suuta Anna at their head.
But in the Senate Chamber the confu«ion was, if possible, greater than in the House. Lach Sen* ntor, soemed to net as though the malaria, which was prevailing to such an alarming extent, had nlready fastened its poisoned vapor upon his ^vitals, and this one, was to bn his last act! The Door-Keeper and Sergcanl-at-Arms were running to and fro, while the large drops of perspiration •which oozed out on their foreheads, attested the labor their physical constitutions were undergoing —and the Secretary (poor Charley) was kept articulating words, as fust as his little month could .get them out. Senators were addressing the •Chair, and one another, at almost the s(jme time, •while the President decided that the members nearest to the desk, had priority to the floor—and
•ho
they continued to act, until finally becoming *hrim full of love for their dear constituents, they 'unanimously consented to adjourn!! V. This is a picture nut highly colored. Lot U9 now look at the matter in tho most serious light •that it possibly can be presented, and see if there (is sufficient cause for the adjournment:
It is true that there is one case of the Small Pox
rnt
the Palmer House and true that many of the members boarding at that house did, before they tknew tho character of the disease, visit the room nf the sick, and thus, might be the causc ofspread•ing the infection among flic rest of the members.
But, is lill tins sufficient to justify the Legislature, the members of whicli, have nil (or nearly so) linen vnccinatqJ, to adjourn at fhe expense of thousands of dollars—right in the middle of an important election, iiml-just as mu(4i important business was being presented befort) them1!
If some of tho members have so exposed themselves to the disease that they may "be the means •of givine if to others, is'that any reaaonwhy those thus infected, should scatter throughout the entire State, carrying this loathsome infection in 4he bosom of quiet ntid healthy villages—in retired and inland neighborhoods, and thus by one act of foolishness spread this "Hydra of eriHrnities1 from one end of our country to the other! "Let common sense answer. Yours, &e. TYRO.
Tills was afterwards reconsidered, anil the adjourninant agrocni uotfor the second Monday in UMiuwy. IED. EX.

Canal Tolls. - We,
last week, gave it as our
opinion, that the whole amount of tolls collected on the Wabash and Erie Canal, within the season of navigation just closing, would range from $110,000 to $115,000. We are now enabled to state that it reaches in round numbers $126,000.

Pork.—This
1847.
The Weather - The snow which fell on the 14th inst., covered the ground to an average depth of from 17 to 20 inches, and is said to be the deepest ever seen in this quarter. It has since slightly melted and frozen again at night, which makes superb sleighing, and every thing in the shape of slides or of horseflesh is now brought into requisition and the sound of the merry sleigh-bell is heard all day and all times of the night. Last night and to-day (the 21st) is the first taste of very cold wealther that we have had. The River. - The Wabash is in almost a navigable condition, and one steamer has been at the landing for a day or two. Floating ice in the stream in considerable quantities, and if the river was lower, we presume it would soon close up.
is the midst of the pork season,
and the weather is now fine for slaughtering.—. from the number of porkers that are daily driven along the streets towards that bourne from which live hog returns, we think, we shall soon rival that great city of Grease on the Ohio river, opposite the mouth of Licking. From what we can learn, up to this time, about 11,000 hogs have been slaughtered, leaving about 6,000 in the pens ready for the knife. The price of hogs may he stated as follows:— 5,25 for hogs weighing 225 lbs. and over; $2,00 tr 180 up to 225 lbs; and $1.75 for 150 up to 80 lbs; or from $2,00 to $2,06 or $2,12 for
pound lots.
8alt.—There
is still a panic about salt We
lear that it retails at 75 c«. per bushel,.in a very 0wll way, and we have seen a small lot by the brrel which is offered at 96 cts.'per bushel and 10 less. The Western lately brought up 330 bartls upon which a York merchant made about $00 off of some two or three at Terre-Haute.— islt therefore may be |ut down as very uncertin. 'iZ
