At the request of a subscriber to the Sunday Mercury in. Alabama, I will preach from this text:

To love ia painful, that is true—

Nt to lore is painful too

Dnt oh! it give* tho greatest pain

To lovo and not be loved again.

My hearers: I love to preach about love for lovo forms rosy wreath for tlxrheart, in which the green leaves of friendship, the flowers of affection, and a few thorns of pain ore entwined, just for the suke of variety- It is tho prccipus cement that adheres soul to soul —the fooi.1 of angels in heaven, and a stimulant to mortals on earth. It smoothes down tho asperities of human nature—lines tho breast with tho velvet of sympathy—and Rives a silken coaling to the rough exterior of humanity. To love ardently, deeply, devotedly, 1 acknowledge is sometimes painful: nevertheless it is a pleasant pain, attended with some delightful sensations. It is a kind of inward itching, which requires llio continual exercisc of scratching and yet the irrttatian is never allayed. Tho more wo scratch, the more we itch—awl nothing but matrimony can serve as an eflectual remedy—and that, in too many instances, is far worse than the discafie.

My friends: Not to love is also painful. To have ull our thoughts entombed the dark aepulchre of Bcliishnes*, and our hopes lost tho cold mists of misanthropy, is about as bail as being confined in a dungeon, the fragments "of one's formet-mes. lhe light oi love admitted through0 windows of "waiiu& siui uoiuiatres tlio soil of the soul—causca the buds of benevolence to expand, and the capsules of charity to be filled with the ripe seeds of sympathy. Without tho genial influence of love the bosom freezes, and becomes as barren as a goose pasture in winter. If flower chances «o bloom, it is destitute of fragrancc or, if it have any, it wastes its sweetness, as the poet says, upon tho desert air. To be without love is like boine without a tire in winter, a lamnat night, ona a sun at mid day. The heart that never loves is os hanl

qs

ft brick but, os insensible os

pickled clam to all the finer feelings, and a stranger toeverv delightful emotion. An old bachelor, my friends, whoso heart is never warmed with aflection is a miserable nobody in the world. Ho is as cold-blooded us a turtle, and looks as melancholy as a clatn. Ilis hopes die as soon as they bogin to pinfeather there is no more sentiment in his soul than thcfo is music in a cornstalk fiddle—his thought* are wrapped up in the shroud of self ho kuows not tho pleasures attendant on the soxu.il amalgamation of souls—his abode is fixed in the solitary wild of celibacy, where all is cheerless, comfortless and dreary. There ho livos and there he dies, imhonorcd and unwept and when ho is finally carried awnv by tho current of time, we can only say, There goes another parccl of rubbish into the gulf of eternity!

My hearer* It i* painful to love, an painful not lovo—painful any how you can Ik it but oh! it is excruciating pain to love and not hsvr wsiprocatcd To go to an extrnvng.mt ouihy of affection, and then have all vraMsl or s»nt home as aour aa swill, is enough to make man tear his thirl and tread on hU own corns. It's nian*ltughior for a girl toapum ft young chap a lovo, when »hr knowa that by ao doing she will drive tho poor frlKnv to dcatruction in a considerable of hurry. It'* rriutxlor in the first degree—it's cruelty Uf hrlpk animal*—it'« wowe than akinning eeU alive and any female gailty of auch ft wanton art. mi^i' tobe courted by flend* during her lifcthne, and vr.xl.icJ to the devil at last.
