PRESENCE

OF

MIND.—Two boys, about

twelve years of age, got iuto a mass in (/uniberland street, lately, and went ." After tujging and pulling at each o'.her'a hair, and slashing about in general way, they went down. The one at the bottom, getting the worst of if, cried out—

IIi)Iion, John, there's a policcman His adversary relaxed his hold, to look over his shoulder for the policeman but lie never madeagrater mistake in his life— for, quick as a flash, the boy beneath hore him over, and was himself uppermost, playing away like a saw mill.

I say, Jim," said the pummelled boy, hat wasn't fair." "Holler enough, then,"said the boy above, "Holler enough, then, and I'll letyouup." "Enough it is, then—but if you hadn't talked about the perlice, I'd lick'd you to thunder," said the satisfied urchin, as he rosq^to his foot and picked his hat frwsn the gutter.

The Traveller states that during the thunder showor which occurred on Monday after-noon, five boys were on their way from Washington village to South Boston, and on the commencement of the rain, took shelter under a tree. There they remained some time, when suddenly ic of the lads shouted-, "C-jnae, le.'j be going. With a single promptness they all started. At the same instant the tree was struck by lightning, and shivered into a thousand fragments. One of the Lids named Peterson was so near that one of the boughs, in falling struck his arm. Had the boys remained, they would, probably, have all been instantly killed.

A Pickpocket Detector has been invented down East. It consists externally of a case, resembling that of a watch in size and shape. It lias a fob chain or string, and is worn in the pocket like a watch.— Within the case is a boll aid sjr'ng" hammer, the latter connected with thu fob chain. The supposition is that the thief will suppose that the watch-chain is attached to a bona

"If ever you think of marrying a widow, my sou," said an anxious parent to his heir, "select one whose first husband' was hung that is the only way to prevent hor throwing his memory in your face, and making annoying comparisons "Even that won't prevent it," exclaimed a crusty old bachelor "she will then praise him, and Hanging would bo too good for you."

proached, nnd therefore avoided it. The lamp-posts, he ndd«d, ho "heard," as he approached within a couple of yards of them, and pould count every one of thein on the side of the street on which lie parsed. The impediments which puzxled him were shur: posts or heaps of stones not sufficiently high to reach his car, but he generally managed ty avoid accidcnts.

PRACTICAL JOKE.—A pleasure party of Albanian! started on Sunday evening on a ho* excursion to Philadelphia, buf when they reached New York they were astonished at being arrested and marched up to the UniUd States marshal's office. After a little talk the matter was explained, it being found that some joker in Albany had telegraphed tho marshal that a tillibuMerinc pary, bound for Cuba, would reach NewYork on Monday morning, and also th* uame of the vessel which they contemplated taking. The marshal shook hands wit.. tho party and bade thera good-bye.

A TIGHT PLACE —During A thunde. storm in the town of Berne, on Wednesday, says Ihe Albany Knickerbocker, the electrir fluid struck an apple tree, against which a young man by the name of Lawrence wa.•caning. It split the tree from top to bot torn, making a gap sufficiently large to let Mr. L. slip in about a foot, immediately ter which it sprang to. and hrld him as tight as iTii had been in a steel trap. Before he could bo extricated, a resort to crowbars became neceasary. This is probably on* of the tightest places that Mr. L. ever got into.

watch, and will

accordingly pull the chain in order to obtain the prize. But instead of getting the watch the watch gets him. The pull sounds the alarm-bell, the owner of the witch grabs the rogue, and the policeman conducts him to limbo.

In Memphis, Tennessee, the other day, a countryman stood gazing in Mansfield's windows, where two skeletons hung suspended—one being that of a man, the other a boy. A stranger coming uf— '"Whoso skeleton is that?" asked the countryman, pointing to the larger. 'That is Shakspear's,' said the stranger. "And whose is that?" continued the countryman, pointing to the smaller. 'Tnat's is Shakspeai's too," answered the wag. '"How can it be?" "Why, that's him when ho was a boy!" was the rejoinder. '.'Oh I never thought of that."

And our country friend walked away wondering how them"queer cusses," the doctors, got the bones outof Shakspear's body when he was alive!

Two SIDES OF THE QUESTION.—A young lady of Charleston, Mass., whose mother had rebukod her for wearing a particually largo hooped skirt, flew into a passion and rushing down to the dock, leaped off, with the intention of drowning herself.— But this was impossible, no life preserver could have sustained her more effectually, and she was taken from the water by a party just as she had made the sixth ineffectual attempt to submerge her head. This is the other side of the hoop question.

N. SMITH & SONS, Vincennes, Ind. Recommendation. We the undersigned citizens of Knox county, are using Scott's Little Giant Corn and Cob Crusher, and find them the best improvement of the kind we have ever seen, and recommend them to the farmers and stock feeders throughout the State We find it a great saving of feed and convenience to a farmer, and believe that stock do much better on corn and cob meal properly led, than any other way it can be fed. We also find the Mills to do all they are recommended to do.

FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A &

4

FAMILY -PHYSICIAN..

There has long existed a pubtia demand for on effective Purgative Pill which could be relied on

as sure and perfectly safe in its operation This has been prepared to meet that demand and an extensive trial its virtues has conclmivele shown with what success it accomplishes the purpose designed. It is easy to make a physical Pill, hut not so «asy to make the best of all PiUs —one which shottld have none of the objections but all the advantages of every other. This has been attempted here, and with what success we would respectfully submit to the public decision It has been unfortunate for the patient hitherto that almost every purgative medicine ia aerimonious and irritatina to the bowela. This is not. Many of them produce si much gripintr pain and revulsion in tho system as to more than counterbalance the good to be derived from them. These PiV* produce no

1

irritation or pain, unless it arises

from a previously existing obstruction or derangement in the bowels Being purely vegetable, no harm can arise from their use in any qaantitybut it is bolter that any medicine should be taken judiciously. Minute directions for their use in ihe several diseases to which they are applicable are given on tho box. Among the complaints which have been speedily cured by them we may mention Liver Complaint, in its various forms

«i

Jaundice. Indigestion, Languor and LossofAppeliie Listlessnew, Irritability. Billions Headache, Billlous revcr. hevcr and Ague, Pain in the side and Loins, for in truth all these ate but the consequence of diseased action of the liver. As an aperient, they afford prompt and sure relief in cos tiveness, Piles Colic, Dysentery, Humors,Scrofula, and Scurvy, Colds, with soreness of the body, [Ulcers and impurity of tho blood in short, any and every case where a purgative is required.

They have also produced some singularly successful cttfes in Rhentnatism. Gout, Drepsy Gravel, Eysipelas, Palpitation of the Heart, Pains in the Back, Stomach, and Side. They should bo freely taken in the spring of theveat to purify the blood and prepare the system for the change of seasons. An occasional dose stimulates the stomach into healthy action and restores the appetite and vigor. They purify the blood, and, by their stimulant action on tho circulatory system renovate the strength of the body, and restore the' wasted or diseased energies of the whole organism. Hence an occasional dose is advantageous iveti though no serious derangement exists but unnecessary dosing should never be carried too far, so every purgative medicine reduces the strength, when taken jo excess The thousand cases in which a physician is-required cannot be enumerated here, but they suggest themselves to the reason of every body and :t is confidently believed this piU will answer better purpose than any thing which has hitherto been available to mankind When their virtues fire once known the pub1 io will no longcrdoubt what romedy to employ when in need of a cartliartic medicine.
