LJLL? J."."—•—*H"———i——— Mr Smich Lcungiup on tfhe Sofa. I ^HRS. SMITH LECTPHtS HIM FOR ITi"' There is a touch of practical good

scnso about the following that will be appreciated by. thousands, It is from tbo Maryavillo Tribune *3 'I declaro Mr. Smith this Js tbn Bad. Hare you aro streichcd out on tho s^fa. mussing it up and my nice carpct is all spoiled by the irampfo" of your coprse boots. 1 shall bo ashamed to bring any one into the parlor again, and I have ta ken sgt.much pains to keep everything nice I do think Mr. 3mith» you are tho liiftst thoughtless, careless man 1 ever did sec—yau-duti't a rear to care h.owr much trouliie, you me." IT I had no tnore care than you have,\ve would soon .have a nice JooKlng house^— it would not bo long till our new MISC and furniture would be just as bad as the old.' said John Smith's wife to him, as she saw him in the parlor taking a nop on the sofa.

Mr. Smith rose up ilmvly anil an* swered

sso

cool, and tho sola looked so inviting, that 1 could not resist the temptation to snooze a little. 1 thought when we were ^building a new house and furnishing it thus, that wo were doing it because the ,old house and furniture were not a* comfortable as desirable, and that I and my own dear Mary, would indulge ourselves in a little quiet leisure in these nice rooms, and if we chose, in loung.ing upon the sofas and rocking in these cushioned arm chairs away.from the noise of the family, and tho smell uftW cooking stove. '1 did not dream of displeasing, you

Mary, and I thought it would give you pleasure to see me enjoying a nap oni the sofa this warm afternoon. I.notice when Mcrcham Swell, or Col- Bingham, and their families are here, you appear delighted to have Sofas and cushioned arm chairs for them to sit or lounge up*, on. 1 thought that the -houso and the sofas were to use—that we have paid a" large sum of money for them but I supposo that I was mistaken, and that we aro to sit in tho old kitchen, and if I want to take a nap, or rest a littlo when I am fatigued, I am to lie down on a slab in the wood house and if you want to rest, can go to the children's trundle bed in the little closo bed room wher9 tho flics can havo a chanco at you.'

The irony of Mr. Smith's reply only provoked his wifo and threnened with a repctition-of Mrs. Smith's speech, with unpleasant additions and variations, and knowing that I10 would get tired of gaining victories over her by argument beforo sho would think of getting tired of defeat, ho took himself out, and left Mrs. Smith to fix up and dust out, and lock him out of his own houso, and take a seat on an old chair in the kitchen, which Mrs, Smith said was good enough to use every day—in the kitchen where no one sees it.

Poor mistaken Mrs. Smith, thought 1, yet most women are like her. They want a fine house, and when they get it they want on out house built'to live in, and they confine their families to a few small rooms, poorly furnished, whilo the main rooms, well furnished, are never seen by the family, only when visitors come. Both houso and furniture are too grand for use. The carpet is too fine for their husbands to walk on—the minors aro too fino for them to look into—the furniture is all too fine for him to see or use.

It is a fatal day to enjoyment when a family gets a house and furniture too lino for use, and yet most women have an ambition to have it so. Better would it be if they were contented with such a houso and furnituro as is suited to every day use. The houso largo enough to accommodate one's friends and the furniture such as all use when at hotne.-— Rose Rambler.

Gun Making.

A correspondent of the Traveller gives the following account of the manufacture of guns at Windsor, Vt., and at

Hartford, Conn. A flat bar of iron two feet long, and weighing eight pounds, is started at one end of a series of fourteen trip hammers, which strike eight hundred blows a minute. In its progress it is flattened, lengthened, rounded and welded. It then passes through a series of borers by which the inner surface is smoothed, polished, and the spiral grooves cut. A series of lathes then polishes the outer surface. Other processes prepare the lock and appendages. The stock is of black walnut, which comcs rough from the forests of Ohio, passes rapidly through its own metamorphosis by appropriate machinery. That for cutting the patch box and the inlets for the lock, is wonderful. It consists of a frame having a lateral motion, in which is inserted a sories of drills moving perpendicularly, each in its turn, as the frame moves laterally. What 1 have described relates to the .Minnie rifle.

Shnqe*s rifle is a lighter arm for horsemen and sportsmen, neater, short-: er an more perfect. The barrel instead of being wrought iron, is mnu'a of cast steel, atid tho calibre is bored from .j solid cylinder. This arm has roceived the approbation of tho government over !,all others at the species. The exeel lence consists, not only in the perfect adaptation for loading at the breech, but -in apparatus for priming. A cylinder twb inches long, and as largo as a pipe stem, contains fifty flattened caps, ru sembHng spangles on a lady fan.—

This cylinder, inserted perpendicularly on the top of tho -breech, rests on a spi. spring pressing upwards, After each discharge, and the re^cockiug of the gun, a dwiicato slider removes a cap from its cylindrical pipe, and fixes it on trie vent ready for another discharge. The ball .is solid and conical,"attached to thecaftridge by a string. The cartridge and ball are two inches in length. The operator provided wiih cartridges at hit sido and rounduig at the breivii, if he is practiced, can discharge tho piece eighteen times mtouto.

December 10, JS51. i, Datr Sir.—Having experienced very great benefit from the use of your COMPOUND srKfr OF WILD ciiERfty, I feel bound as an act or humanity, to recommend this most invaluable medicine to others. More than eight yearft ago I fell into a gradual Catarrhal Consumption and notwithstanding the u£e of many other remedies, I eon tinued to grow weaker, aiidmofo and more disordered in my lungs and elotnaeh Jintil myself and my friends despaired of my lifo' My digos tive powers became so exhausted that I could 1101 bear the lightest kind of food, except in the mi tHiiest quantities, in this condition, at the requestor my brother, I began to use your SYRCI'. Almost immediately I derived great benefit from it. In lessthan three days after commcncing the use of small doses, my stbmach began to recover its natural tone and power—gradually every bad symptom began logiveway, and iti afewnionthr 1 recovered to a state of coftifbrtnble, though not perfect health. I have no hesitation in sayini: that to your'WLLD ctiERRY1 I owo, under God. the continuance of my life, and a degree'o health far beyond my expectations. 1 havosinec had attacks of the same old symptoms, but in every instance I have resorted with perfect sue cess to the uso of your medicine.

CHERRY PECTORAL

For tho Cure ot

COUGHS, COLDS, HOARSENESS, BR0MHITIS, WIIOOPING-COUGH, CROUP, ASTHMA, AND

CONSUMPTION.

We invito tho attention of the Public to tho Certificates! appended below, and besuenk for them thnt candid consideration which their honest frankness deserves. .Men in such stations as many who voluntarily bear witness to the efficacy and value of Cherry Pectoral, do not ^[ontoiily trillo with, or distort facts, nor overstate tluir convictions. Judgo then, whether this i9 no* tho medicine to trust when you must have relief for the throat orlungs judge too, whether every family ought not to havo it by them a9 a safeguard against mo every whore prevailihg enemy, which stents with fatal frequency upon almost every flock and carries oir the lamb from many a home

Jackson, C. II., Jackson City, Ohio, November 20, 1852. Dr. J. AVER,

Sir—The Cherry Pectoral is much inquired aftor. Several of o:tr best Physicians have used it, three of them in their own case and always with the happiest cflocts. The numerous patent medicinen always before thetn, lead to incredulity in regard to every new remedy and it is only alter undoubted evidence of value in any article, that anything like a generul confidence can bo excited.

The unrivalled excellence of this combination of agents, Lin the CHKIUIY PIXTOIIAL] proved beyond cavil by repeated trial under their own observation, has compelled modical men to proclaim abroQd its usefulness. It is beyond all doubt the bestgeneral remedy wo have for the Pulmonary A/frpttonsof this climate, at tho sama time a sedative and expectorant—a raro combination of properties.

In tho hopo that it will prove its own reward, I subscribe myself. Respectfully yourob't. scrv'l.

JAS. H. C. MILLElt, M. D. Allegan, Mich., 10th. Jan 1853.

Dear Sir- No one, no not one man, woman, or child—can be lound to deny that the CHEKBY PECTORAL

IS

alt that it claims to be. There is

much used in this vicinity although not known until recently. The community should know its virtues. Yours truly,

JOHN R. KELLOGG, M. D.

Let Gentlemen of the Legal Profession mark this case. WIIXJAMSEURO, L. I., Sept. 3,1852,

DR. J. C. AVER, Over application for the past three years to my duties as an advocate brought on sorno eight months agoa severe irritation of the bronchia) whiuh was a constant annoyance to me, and fast becoming a source of great apprehension. Every remedy tried failed to even relievo me, till I used your CUERIIY PECTORAL. This hes not only relieved me, but as 1 trust, wholly cured me. 1 care nothing for the reputation of advocating Patent Medicines, and this is at yourservice. 1 shall recommcnd it to members of the bor, and others whom 1 may meat, laboring under similar indispositions. "'Yours truly,

R- F. JONES.

Sbcxn PABIS, Me., Aug. 18, I860.'

I havo no hesitation in saying, that I regardf Avra's CUERRY PECTORAL as decidedly tho best remedy within my knowledge for the cure of chronic bronchitis, coughs, and all diseases of the lungs. M. A. RUST, M. D.

MO.VTQO.SEBT, Ala., October 4, 1849.

DR. J. C. AVER,—-Sir: I haveiifced your admirable compound extensively in my praetice, and find it to surpass, by far, any other remedy we have I or curing diseases upon the Lungs.

Your obedient servant,

R. li. JONES, M. D.

What yet remains to convince the most incredulous that the Cherry Pectoral is alt that it purports to be, viz: an urfequalied remedial agent for all diseases of the Throat and Lungs. 1'he experience of years, has proven it to be such, and wo submit it to the people, believing that its virtues will fully maintain its reputation.
