A SNAKR STORT.—A Trxan lells a good story of a snake in that country who was caught ono night stealing eggs. The writer and his wife were aroused in the middle of the nigiu by tbe crash occasioned hy the falling of their cups and plates from the dresser. Springing up to see the author of this "attack upon China,*' the correspondent found a targ* «nak», attracted by a number of eggs, Itad crawled upon the shelf and swallowed an egg, and in order to get at thci next he had put his head and a portion: of his body throogh the handle of a jug which happened to stand between him and the coveted delicacies. The handle was large enough to let his body, in its natural state, slip throogh* but not sufficiently Urge to let it pass through wh«n puffed up bv the egg. White in this position he swallowed the second egg. His makeshift unable to advanee or retreat, began a general floundering, and of course made much mischief.

I regard this a splendid scheme, because it will prevent a bloody war in F.urope, and at the same time elevate us in the estimation of "the rest of mankind." So soon as the Bear hears that "Uncle Sam" has annexed the land in dispute, he will of course evacuate the premises, knowing perfectly well that we not only have on hand in "the hard" tbe sinews of war, but we can extend them ad infinitum, and send over in sixty days good hard-fisted fighting soldiers and sailor* enough to give his army of three hundred thousand men a sound gf out with stores for the Arctic Searchlicking It is true Turkey might want ir,g Expeditions, ond that Copt. Some of the incidents he narrated were of much interest, the following, for example, telling how the ship "Breadalbane" was lost: "There are, perhaps, very few here who are aware or have read an account of the wonderful power the ice has upon a vessel, or bow easily a vessel may be sunk by it. I will just give you a short account of the Breadalbane going down, if I am not trespassing on your time. 1 must tell you that the Breadalbane was a transport ertgaged by Government to

It is generally considered that if a ship Is nipped and she rises, the ice getting under her, she is safe but if she does not rise, then it is very probable she will be destroyed.
