A STORY- FOR CHILDREN. BASIL LEE OR OLOBIOUS BEVEXGB.

•I will never forgive him, that 1 won t, exclaimed Basil Lee, bursiing into the room where his eldest sister wasquiet'y seated at her work. *1 will neer lorgive him.' 'Never forgive who, Bsxilt Ky denr bny, how angry and excited you look. Who ha« offended him 'Why, Charles West, Alice,' replied Basil as he put hit book* oway in their place. •And what has Charles West done to offend youf Come and set by me— there, now tell me all about it.' •Well/said Basil, 'Mr. Raymond who Is a friend of Mr. Mtthews, and is stay ing with him, came into the schoolroom to-day he ia a very nice, kind gentleman, and so he offered a half dollar to the boy who first did sum He should set us. Five boys beside me took up iheir slates, he set us all the same sunt and then we nil set to work. Charles West came and sai next to me, and I saw him copy down every figure ns fast as I did it. When I had only one figure to do. Mr. Mathews left the room I looked to sec who went out, and when I turned,to rhy slate again, every figure was rubbed out. I knew Charles did it, because he colored so. In a minute he had finished his sum and carried it up it was first done and correct, so he had the the half dollar. I was so angry the bell rung to go home, and 1 ran off directly but 1 im determined glorious revenge on him, provoking. Alice!' •Yes, dear, very, and what Is your re venge to be?' •Oh, I know, I will tell you, he just deserves it.- Mr. Mathews has said iliai ho will turn any boy out of the school, who used the key to thn Grammar Lxercises. Well. I saw Charles usm# one yesterday, and I will tell of him, 1 am determined.' •Listen to me a moment, Husii Charles is only at scnool for one more year at tho end of that time, a gentleman has promised, if he behaves well, to place him in a situation where in a fesv years he will be able to support his wid owed mother. Do you think the gentleman will give him his situation if he Is turned in difgracn from his school.— And what would be the disappointment of his aged mother, to think that her son, who. she hoped, would support and comfort her latter days, had di*graccd himself. Surely he would bring down her gray haiis with sorrow to lite grave,' •Oh, Alice 1* exclaimed Basil, with tears i'n eyes.'l never thought of all that: no, 1 would not ruin poor Charley fur the world.' •This would be your glorious rovenge, my dear boy,' said Alice, quietly* •Oh. no, no! dear Alice, never, 1 never would be so wicked as that thougli Charles did make me very angry at the time, but you know 1 should like to punish iin a little for it. »Well, Basil. 1 know a way to puntah him, and to have a reully glorious revenge.' •Alice, dear, pray tell me, said Unsi'. •Well, do you remember the text, 'Be not ovorcorno with evii,' what comes nextV

10 have a Wns ii not

Why. But overcome evil with pood, to be sure, Alice. I know what you mesn now.'

Well then think over what a glorious revenge you can have by obeying tho command in that text, my dear, and Alice left the room.

Basil did not »it thinking long, bolore he declared what he w»uld do. VVith Alice* permission on the following day. he invited Charles West to tea he was much surprised on receiving the invitation, but accepted it. They had a very pleasant evening together. Their principal ssnusemcut consisted In sailing Basil's ships on a pond in the garden: for the finest. Charles expressed great admiration, but the time for his return to school came. Ba*il took him up

•Oh, no,' cried Charles, stepping back, •I could not think of such a thing.' •Oh, but, Charley, you must have it. Alice lets me do what I like with my ahips. and I can make myself auothar just like it and papa saya if Mr. Mat thews will allow you, you can come up on Saturday and sail it with mine and 1^ will teach you how to make ships too.'

Charles turned away his head to hide his tears.

he exclaimed, at they bid

each other good night, will never try to Injure you again,as I dtd yesterday, no 1 never will. Good night, dear Basil.'

From that day Charles and Basil were firm friends* Charles was easily persuaded never to use the key to the exercises again he always after tried to Imitate his friend's example and he gained the esteem of his master, and the love of hia school follows.

POINT OF ROCKS, Frederick Co Md. I June 9th, 1852, Dr. Swayne—Dear Sir: Believing it a duty 1 owe to the public, and in justice to you, I have thought proper to make knuwn one of tho most extraordinary cures in my own case, that has ever been truly recorded. In the month of October last, I was afUicted with a sev.eregathering in mv breast, which formed a large abscess, and almost communicated to my lungs, and very much afflicted them, and discharged large quantities of corruption, exiertnl and internal. My breath could also pass through niy lungs and out through the cavity of my breast with apparent ease, attended with a violent cough, day and night, loss of appetite, and extreme debility, so that my physician thought my case entirely hopeless, and beyond the power of medicine. 1 remained in this wretched condition for a long time, until I was wasted to a mere skeleton, and there seemed to be no hope for me but having read in the public papers of the many wonderfu I cures performed by your COMPOUND SYRUP OF WILD CHERRY, 1 immediately sent to Baltimore for five bottles, and commenced its use. and to my great satisfaction and the joy of my anxious family, the abscess or opening in my lungs began' to heal, and the cough to subside, and on using ten bottles, I was restored to perfect health. 1 feel very grateful, and firmly believe that to your valuable medicine, under the Blessing of Divine Providence, I am indebted for this great change, and ain happy to say that 1 am now enjoying as good health as I ever have.

Yours, veryjrespectfully,: THOMAS DIXCN.

DR. ITUXTEPS MEDICAL MAytTAL AND HAND BOOK FOX Til A FFLfCTED— Containing an outline of the origin, progress, treatment and cure of every form of disease, con* tracked by promiscuous sexual intercourse,by solfahuse, or by sexual excess, with advice for their prevention.written in a familiar style avoiding all medical technicalities, nnd everything that would offend the ear of decency, from the result of some twenty years successful practice, exclusively devoted to the cure of diseases of delicate or private nature.

To which is added, receipts for the cure of the above diseases, and a treatise on thecatises,s ymptoms and cure of the Feverand Ague, for twentyfive cents a copy six copies one dollar will be forwarded to tiny part of the United State, hy mail, free of postage. Address postage paid. Cosden & Co., Publishers, or **box 196, Post Office, Philadelphia.

This is. without exception, the most comprehensive and intelligible work published on the class of diseases of which it treats. Avoiding all technical terms, it addresses itsell to the reason ol its readers. It is free from all olijeciionnble matt» r, and no parent however fastidious, can object to placing it injthe hands of his sons. The author hasdevoteu many years to the treatment of the various complaints treated of, 'with too little breath to puff,' and 'too little presumption to impose,' he has offered to th? world at ihe merely nominal price of 23 cents, the fruits of some twenty years most successful practice."—IIKKAI.O. "No teacher of parent should bo without the knowledge imparted in this .invaluable work. It would save years of pain, mortification and sorrow to the youth under their charge."—PEOPLE'S ADVOCATE.

A Presby'erian clergyman in Ohixi, in writing of "Hunter's Medical Manual,'' saysi "Thousands upon thousands of our youth, by evil example and the influence of the passions, have been led into the hnbit of self-pollution without realizing the sin and fearful consequence upon themselves and their posterity. Tha constitutions of thousands who nre raising families have been etifeeb.'ed, if not broken down, and ihey do not know the cause or the cure. Any thing that can be done so to enlighten and influence the public mind an lo check, and ultimately to remove this wide-spread source 1 htunan wretchedness, would conler the greatest blessing next to tho religion of Jesus Christ,

the present and coming generations.-

Intemperance, (or tiio use of intoxicating drinks.) though it has slain thousands, is not a greater scourge to tho human race. Accept my ihanks on behalf of the nlHictcd, and believe me, vour coworker in the good Work you are
