THE-COURIER.
Saturday Morning, Sept. 10,1853.
A CHEESFOL HEART.—I once henr.i O young lady say to an individual: 'Your countenance to me is like the rising Run. for it always gladdens me with cheer ful look.' A merry or cheerful coume nance ta one of the things which Jeremy Taylor said his enemies and persecutors could not take away from him.— There ore some persons who spend their lives in this world as they would spend their lives if shut up in a dungeon.— Everything is made gloomy and forbid ding. They go mourning and complaining from day to day. that they have so little, and are constantly anxious, ie^s what they have should escape out of their hands. They always look upon the dark side, and can never enjoy the good that is not in religion. Religion makes the heart cheerful, and when its large and benevolent principles are exercised, man will be happy in spite of himself
The industrious bee does not stop to complain that there are so many poisonous flowers and thorny branches on its road, but buzzes on, selecting honey where ho cttn find it, and passing quietly by the places where it is not. There is enough in this world to complain about and find fault with, if men only have the disposition.
We often travel on a hard and uneven road, but with a cheerful spirit, and heart to praise God for his mercies, we inoy walk therein with comfort, and como to the end of our journey with peace.—Dewy.
A Good Scriptural Nnme. The Richmond Times of Saturday re laies the following:
A gentleman travelirg in a section of country which shall be nomeless, stop, ped at the house of a pious old woman, nnd observing her fondness for a pet dog. ventured to ask tho name of the animal Tho good woman tnswercd that she called him 'Moreover.' •Is not thut a strango name?' inquired the gentleman. •Yes,' said the pious old lady, 'but 1 thought it must bo a good one, as 1 found it in the Bible.' 'Found it in the Bible!* quoth the gentleman. 'Pray In what part of the Bible did you find it?'
The old lady took down her Bible with the utmost reverence, and turning to the text, read as follows: 'Moreover the dog came and licked his sores.' •There,' said she triumphantly, 'have I not the highest authority for the name?'
ANIMALCULES IN WATER.—The idea entertained by most persons, that all water, whether found in springs, wells brooks, ponds or cisterns, or even thnt fresh rain water, is filled with living creatures, is, as far as the microscope enables us to ascertain, without foundation. Water is a component of two gases—hydrogen and oxygen—and the existence of animalcules in it, is altogether dependent on certain causes, principally on its contact with vegetable matter thus, if you tako a bowl of water, and place a hand ful of hay or other vegetable matter in it in a few days the top will be covered with a scum, which, by putting a small quantity under the microscope, will be found to be a mass of animalcules, but still only of lower order, most of them being the monads; the smallest of this class being so minute that 80,000,000 can swim about in one drop. ~~~~~~~
CHAMBERMAID.—'I heard you wanted help, ma'am?' LADY.—*1 do, have you any recommendation?'
MAID.—'Yes'm—the gentleman with whom I last lived said I was a great deal better housekeeper than his wife, and that I could act the Mndy' neurly as well, and—'
LADY.—'But why did you lesvo there?' MAID.—'Because you seo his wife— my mistress—got a littlo jealous, only because she sec her husband squeeze my hand and kiss me that was the only reu «vn I left my place.'
LADY.—'Miss, I have altered my mind. I will do my own chamber work.' ..
England is so deeply engaged in Manufactures, that sho brings a large portion of her breadstuff and provisions, as well as the raw material for her manufactures, from every part of the world. During the first twentyseven weeks of tho presont year, the importation of flour and wheat alone, into the ports of Great Britain, was equal to 16,104,752 bushels of wheat. This
Siflerent
uantity was brought from forty eight ports in all climates. The list begins with the Northern port of Russia (Archangel.) and ew.'s with Peru. It in eludes almost every Kuropean Stateincludes Bgvpt and the west coast of Africa, the Philippine Islands, and the Braiits, Australia and the U. States of North America.
Tho New York Courier states that one of the deposits tn iheSix- Penny Bank was made by «n urchin who was without shoes or stockings. It was the sum of five cents and before the end of the day It reached thirty-one cents. He begged that his deposit book might be retained in the bank otherwise his parents would claim all his future earnings, (as they had his previous ones,) for the purpose of liquor. '"r" rj-ri—-r.

The compa* ny commenced with a capital of 85,000 umbrellas.
