THE COURIER,

Saturday Morning, Aug. 20,185-3.

THE SPANISH MINISTER AT WASHINGTON.—The New York Journal of Com merce says:

The Queen of Spain has appointed as her Minister

10

this country, Don Brav

Gonzales. Me is, as we are informed, a man of intelligence and character, has been a member of the Queen's Cabinet, and is about forty years of age. He is eminently a conservative, and devoted to the support of the Spanish dominion as it is, and will be the last man of ail the Queen's subjects to agree to the cession of Cuba either to the United States or to any other power.

The selection of such a man. as the minister to the United States at this time is no doubt designed to counteract the policy attributed by Spain to this Government in regard to Cuba. It is to set off against our appointment of Mr. Soule who, though he does not approve of oc» quiring Cuba by purchase, would be willing to its acquisition in some other way, and is probably to be so instructed.

The present able and worthy representative of Spain in this country, is not as has been stated in some of the news papers, the individual who has Le«»n ap pointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Spain, though the appointee is of the same name. Don Luis Caldcron de In Hurca is recalled, and will be relieved from further diplomatic service, being over sixty years of age, and placed, ac cording to the usage of the Spanish government, upon the diplomatic pension list, with a liberal allowance.

ANECDOTE OF MR. WEBSTER.—A fisherman's son sends the following tt) the Boston Transcript: •In the summer of 1823. when a mere lad, I was at'Swift's,' in Sandwich.— My then schoolmaster was their also, and from him I hud the tale. John Trout was the well-known sobriquet of the fisherman, who attended amateur anglers on their excursions. John was not remarkable for hi« veracity, but qui to otherwise, when his success with the hook and line was the 'subject of his story.4 One day he was 'out' with Mr.Webster. Both were standing in the brook, patient waiters for a bit, when Mr. Webster told John how ha caught a largo, a very large trout, on a former occasion. 'Your honer,' said John, that was very well for a gentleman. But once, when I was standing down by yonder bush, 1 took a fish weighing'—1 forgot how much but of course many ounces more than tho great lawyer's big fish. 'Ah! John, John,' exclaimed Mr. Webster, 'You are an am/A6eous animal—you lie in (he water, and you lie out oj itly

The consus-takers were required to givo an account of the churches, halls, chapels, etc., belonging to all denominations. From the report it appears that there ate thirty-six thousand and eleven churches in the several States, and two hundred and ten in the District of Columbia and the Territories. The total value of church property in the United States is put down at 086,416,. 639. of which ono-halfis owned in New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. There is one church for every five hun. drcd and fifty-seven Irce inhabitants, or for every six hundred and forty-six of the entire population. The average number tho churches will accommodate is three hundred qnd eighty-four, and the average value, 92,400.

BURNING A NKGROFOR MURDER.—The citizens of Pouis county, Missouri, a few days since, burned to death at the stake noj*ro man belonging to Mr. France, for tho murdor, with circumstances of horrible atrocity, of a Mrs. Rains. A meeting of the citizens also gave warning to the master of the negro to leave tho county in ten and the State in thirty days, for tho reason of, besides many other outrages, having corrupted his negroes by unchaste conversation, and thus tompting them to the commission of rape and murder.—Lou. Ttmes.

LAOIKS

MULISH OBSTINACY IN DRESS.—Our young men of the present day run about with black stripes down their legs—not unlike the legs of mules. Why not carry the likeness further, atlow the stripe as in the caso of mules, to run all over their coats! Surely he who dresses himself! ^seed, White Bean like a mule must be 'next to a donkey/ Warehouse, corner o" and, accordingly, cannot make himself ^2*' too ridiculous. A sharp young friend ofours who has studied heraldry, merely to joke upon it, calls these thick heavy strips 4The bars-sinister of taste/— [Punch.

When Sigourney, a notorious wag at Boston, was expiring, a servant entered and informed the attending physician that a man had fallen down the well.— The dying man overheard tho servant, and inquired, with scarcely an audible whisper, '*1 say, doctor, did ht kick Ike bucket?"

ELECTIONS.—The

AT

ladies of

Grand Rapids, Michigan, attended the poll* on the 20th, to urge their husbands and brothers to vote for the Maine law. They were of course successful. In l^eoni the ladies also came out and the town gave 206 majority fur the law.

Jamos Hobbins, aged 97 years, and Miss Harriet Chambers, of Himbleton, Canada, were married last week, after the young gentleman had settled his for. tune of £8,000 per year upon the poor girl. If sh« should outlive him, what a prize of a widow she*11 be for come fast youngster

The Dutch Reformed Churchee arr considering the propriety of dropping the word -Hutch' from the name of their denomination. The word is certainly inapplicable, and it is one which frequently putties and misleads the uoioh Uftted.

Sir Edward Lansdeer recently remarked to a brother artist,**that he had spoiled many of his pictures by adhering too cioeely to nature.'*
