SANTA ANNA AT CAJpTHAGEHA. We hpar by the lust trrivnlt th*t Santa Anon h»sju«t left Carthngenn nudj
ihe successful revolutionists, to take charge of the Government. Itts now about two yearsv since ihi lingular personage quitted Jamaica for Carthagena, where he continued to rc aide, at a place called Turbaco, near the cabal which unites Carthagena with the river Magdalena. Here the banish ed President General dwelt with his family, dispensing an agreeable hospi talhjr to strangers, venting his hatred of our country and countrymen, on all occasions, and enjoying those favorite pursuits which, in Mexico, were wont to divide his time with the cares of government or the command of the army.
A late traveler in New Grenada vis Ited Santa Anna at Turbaro. and, in an interesting letter to tho Courier de* Etats, relates some anecdotes of his way of life. His style was quiet and uniform, nor did the presence of guests in terfere in the least with his daily routine. Every morning, after a cup of coffee, the General mounted his home and rode for a couple of hours. On his return he bathed and breakfasted at ten o'clock. At noon, precisely, he entered his private cabinet, where he received alt who called ondMtincss, and "calculated interest so nicely that he might have told you the productive value of a shilling for a quarter of an hour." In fact, it is aaid that he played the part of an adroit end most successful money lender.
After these daily toils were over, the customary siesta of the ccuntry refreshed his jaded senses and then, five times every week, the neighboring spor s--men Hocked to his house with their choicest game cocks. The pit was im mediately filled. Santa Anna took the seal of honor, to preside over the gladitorial poultry, and every main absorbed enormous bets, in which Santa Anna was commonly a loser ol the dollars he had gained in the morning by his commercial usury. Yet the patient exile lost his doubloons apparently with as much coolness as he had made them.
Before the six o'clock dinner, the General indulged again in the luxury of his bath and whenever his table was honored by the presence of an eminent visitor, he did not fail, no matter how hot the weather, to gratify his personal vanity by appearing at table in full military costume. His meals were not only aumptuous but luxurious, and no one seemed to enj iy them more than the Amphy Irian himself. At night, cards, music, wine, smoking and sometimes dancing, filled up the hours till midnight, when servants appeared to show strangers to their appartments, where .they might chopse a couch or a ham mock, and sleep in comlort, beneath musquito nets, until dny dnwn. As soon as the first rays of light appeared, the guest was n*used by the entrance of servants, with fresh fruits and hot coffee, to commence a day which was Ato be a precise coumerpatt of its predecessor.
This picture of Santa Anna's life, vnTied
by occasonal glonms of ambition— which may now and then be remarked even bon«ath his impnpsivo coldness— exhibits the predominant characteristics of this remitrkublejman —avarice, gam« •4»ling, cock-fighting, vanity, and lu«t of power. These sre strange elements to form the leuder and hope of a nation. It -will no longer be surprising that Mexico .is as wretched as it is, when such a person has had the power, with few intermissions in thirty years, to demoralize the people and to use the Government with the mingled passions of a gamester •and a miser.
Yet, with all his badness, Santa Anna (a gifted with a certain political witch* craft that has always served a while to
lull his country itito quiet, and to give it
lime to recover from the exhaustion waited energy. flow. But the end will he a repeti -n of the past. Since 1849, Mexico hns subsisted on the money we paid for Califor--nla but that is now exhausted, and time alone enn develope what other resourcea will be resorted to.
returned to Mpxico, at the request of Austrian Beaulieu, his eye fell upon a pretiv girl at a window, who, scarcely heeding the clamor, was tranquilly sing ing a song. The conqueror, arrested by the spectcle. che&ed his horse and said, "Que chant et vous. petiteV' sitig the Maid of Lodi, replied the child innocently. **Tu as raison," replied

LEARNING va. DISCIPLINE*
The auhjoined extract from Black'wood's Magazine, is both amusing and
'instructive:
"Larnlng—larnlng—-laming,'* Is the cry of father and mother if my boy had the larnlnjj what a jenus he'd be!' In •course, ye old fools, your bouchat would be a awan among the goslings, but it 'Isn't "laming, half the world want instead of laroing by which they mean cobwebs picked out of dead men's brains. NAPOLEON'S GOODNESS.— As the great Nnpr.leon dashed tri umphamly ituo Lodi. in pursuit «f the
Napoleon mournfully "and I too will sing, if iny enemies would give me time, and if I bad a voice." And that day he would not attack. Yet it was a man with these amiable feelings whom the allied armies hunted to his grave.
During the war in Spain (which was caused by the duke of Wellington's criminal ambition to become Marquis of Douro) a native family was peacefully sitting down to its siesta. or mid way meal, which consisted of Spanish onions and Spanish liquorice, when a savagelooking Frcncli dragoon (not that he really was savage, none of i! em nre like our own brutal soldiery) entered, 'Soh'" he exclaimed, drawing his sabre, '*Palt»x proclaims*war to the knife,' Ha! and doubtlpss you cry "War to the knife.'
Iso, Eh?.' And fork, replied the father of the family, mildly, and pointing 10 a chair at the table. The brave Frenchman paused a moment, burst into tears, ate up all the onions, and departed Haying "Cest different, Dieu vousc benIMC."
A GUNPOWDER PLOT.— We learn from the Roanoke (Va.) Beacon, that on last Sunday, just before service in the Presbyterian church of that village, a stick of wood, about to be cast into the stove, was discovered to have in it the end of a pine plug. It excited suspicion, and upon examination it was found that a charge of powder had been placed in the wood, and concealed in the manner discribed [sic]. The villain had not been dis covertd [sic]. ~~~~~~~
Dr. WAYLAND. in an address before the Baptist Convention, in session in Boston, recently alluded to the paucity of Bnptsst clergymen, and said that sta tisiirg would show that there are some 4.000 rhurches destiute of pastors, some 400 or 600 clergymen are needed to sup ply the vncancics, year by year, in the ranks of those we have, leaving the 4,000 unprovided for.
