THE PACTS.
'The Legislature, nfier trying num her of limes to evade or postpone the subject, was compelled recently to call upon the Auditor of State for n^detailed statement of the expenditures of the last session. Many persons were curious to know how the facts ns reported offi cinlly won Id correspoud with the whig "Expositor," published during the last canvass, and denounced by Govenor Wright and others as "a lying, filthy sheet." To the utter astonishment of the uninformed it turns out that the expenditures were over $15,000 more than the "Expositor*' put them down at, nnd this does not include the cost of the Revision, which will increase them $35,000 more. The Legislature refuses to have the report primed but the fncts will reach the people nevertheless. Now that no election is pending, and after the Auditor has reported, no one will have the hardihood to deny (hem. nnd if they did, the Documentary Journal of the present Legislature will ever remairitn the people a perpetual and indisputable proof. -Lafayette. Journal.
Brain Labor—To many persons it seems a small thing to sit down and prepare matter for the periodical press; but let those inexperienced with the pen, and whose brains have never been trained in sympathetic labor, attempt to furnish intellectual food and recreation to their fellows, and they will soon realize that mental labor is the most destructive to the health of all other toil. Were one to grub the stumps out of the earth, or to sling the sledge hammer 12 hours a day he would be able to stand the drudgery with less injury in the body nnd soul than half the number of hours devoted to menial employment, in the way of writing for the book or newspaper press. Those pithy articles, which constantly appear in the periodicals of the day, contain the very essence of mind or thought, and such literary gentlemen are the first whose constitution are broken down.—<N. Y. Sun>. ~~~~~~~
