present^® lively appearance tn making preparations to receive Gen. Scott, who was expected to arrive at 10 o'clock but did not arrive till 6 o'clock this afternoon. As soon as cannon from the steamers snnounced his approach, the whole landing and house tops in the vicinity were immediately densely crowded. The incessant firing of guns and the cheers from the mass of the people a* they waved to and fro presented sn exciting acene. The crowd was so dense and the anxiety to see Scott so great, that much difficulty waa experienced in reaching the Burnett House. When he made his appearance on the balcony, he was welcomed by the crowds in the streets, windows and housetops with long protracted cheers. The windows were filled with ladies who waved a welcome to the illustrious hero ss he passed. Flags were hoisted from most houses and even the children had their banners with Scott and Graham inscribed upon them.-— There seemed to be but little party distinction in the demonstration. Democrats as well as Whiga appeared anxious to honor the nation's Hero.

The Democratic papers talk abot Gov. Seward's being very zealous fo

zeal whatever for Scott. He did not^ make a solitary electioneering speech, at Washington, nor has he made one in New York. We may go further and say that not a single known Freesoiler, unconnected with the public press, has either spoken or. written for Gen. Scott. But, whilo Seward and the few oilier prominent Frecsoilers, supposed to prefer Scott to Pierce, are wholly inactive,

what are the Van Burcns and tne rest o»

the Locofoco abolitionists doing? Are they not stumping throughout the North for the election of Potco under an express promise held out to them by the Washington Union, that, if Pierce be elocted.he will treat aiike all sections of the Democratic party of which they will be considered an important portion?— Louisville Journal.

The Author op ths Multiplication Table.—We meta gentleman in a bookstore the other evening, searching for the author of the multiplication table Who of our readers could have told him its author! It waa invented by Path#goras, the Grecian philosopher, 639 years before Christ, and is thus 6391 years old. It has done great service in the world, in the study of ma thematic*

Tiw Dsm Man.—A correspondent of the New York Times, writing from Hayti, says there is specimen of humanity there called the "Dead Man/1 .or sometimes the "Poor Man's Hearse."

He is a tall, broad shouldered, brawney limbed fellow, who for a moderate fee takes a coffin containing the remains of some poor victim of the fever, mounts it on his head, and trots it away to the place of burial. Thus has many a poor sailor, whose home was on the deep, in a few daya after arriving there, been borne to his last resting place by the Dead Man, without one mourner followng to hallow the spot by a last look, of alTociion, or a throb of human emuUOn" »«.

Eni.ahging the Area.—It is said ihai the tract of land lately ceded to the United States by the Sioux Indians, is about 800 miles long by 140 broad, making 112,000 square miles, or a piece of ground nearly three times the size of New York, and equal to iho or## England, Ireland, and Scotland put together. is ten times as large as Holland—nine time? the size of iiolgium half as large as France—three times the size of Portugal—five thousand square miles larger than Prussia, and QVflf five limes the size ef Switzerland.

Pennsylvania.—The "Old Chippewa." printed at Pottsville (Pa.) claims 0, 000 majority for Scott, and adds "Thousands upon thousands of honest, patriotic citizens of the Democratic par ty will either quietly vote fur Scott or stay at homo—they will not vote against him. Y»u may depend upon that. It was only the other dny that an active, influential German Democrat from Berks county declared, in substance. 10 one ol our citizens that he had read of Scott for the last thirty years—that ho knew him to be honest and patriotic, because his own parly papers so pronounced him, and he uever heard anything against him until he was nominated for the Presidency. "I will not," he candidly continued "vote for Pierce, because I never heard of him before—if I do not vote for Gen. Scott, I will stay at home—I will not vote against hitnf "—JVask. Banner.

More Land.—It is said that the tract of land lately cedcd to the U.S. by the Sioux Indians, is about 000 miles long by 140 broad—making 112,000 square miles, or more ihan twice as much as the whole of New England. The whole district is made up of the most fertile land in the world, and will ero long be anong the most productive and valuable portions of the Republic.
