IRON IN THE UNITED STATES.—The
New York Courier, in the course of a sensible article on the Iron trade and manufacture, says: "The consumption of iron in the United States at present, is about one million tons per annum, of which over 260,000 tons in pig-metal .— We find, by actual statistics, that foreign countries supply us with nearly 700.000 tons of the entire aggregate, while the domestic product does not much exceed 300,000 tons. In other words, we are patrons to foreign iron labor, in the proportion of nearly twothirds to one-third of our own Iron labor. Now, as we go on increasing in population, and our necessities are augmented, if our furnaces and iron mills are closed for want of protection, does it not plainly follow that this branch of our industry will be wholly suppressed?— How, then, can we escape the alternative, but by reforming a system so pernicious and destructive?" ~~~~~~~
A Western paper has been told that the present low stage of the Ohio river is occasioned by the scarcity of water. Singular. ~~~~~~~
THE JAPAN EXPEDITION.—We learn from the Washington correspondent of the New York Express, that there is no truth in the statementjApi Dutch (Amsterdam) paper, that the.Japan expedition is abandoned. Cora. Perry will re-
and then go on his way^ Tho'diffi'-uliv is, and has been, in** contractors not keeping faith with the Government.— Contracts that ought to have been completed in January last, are not completed yet. These, and these atone, delay the expedition. Meanwhile, no doubt, the King of Holland, as the Amsterdam paper states, has instructed his officers in Japan to forewarn the Emperor there, and to try to induce him to open his kingdom to the commerce of the world. What the expedition now waits for, is the steamer Princeton, waiting at Baltimore for her machinery to be ready.— We believe, also, there has been some difficulty in finding the proper crews*N
A man said to another. "Which is the heav iest, a quart of rum or a quart of water?" "Rum most asuredly," said the other, "for 1 saw a man who weighs two hundred pounds, staggering un der a quart of rum, When lie could have carried a gallon of water wj^h ease."

A Pittsburgh paper says the river so low at that city that it is confined to its bed.

SPIRIT.—
An exchange has the following incident, illustrative of the mistakes which will unavoidably happen in the Spirit-land:
A gentleman was. a few weeks ogo, interrogating the invisible author of certain raps, as to the disease of which he (the rappet) died. With considerable natural difficulty and delay, the reply was spelled out "consumption." The questioner looked a little dissatisfied and a physician in the company, who was zealous in the f'tith, hastened immediately to explain that there are a variety of forms of disease, either of which may well enough come under the general name consumption. "That's all very well," said the questioner."but it hardly applies in this enso, for the man he professes to be was blown up in a steamboat!" The rapper was too indignant to muko any further revelations to that medium.
OYSTERS.—The Albany Journal is Informed on reliable authority, that the quantity of oysters now planted in the waters of New Haven harbor is 500,000 bushels. Estimating 200 oysters to the bushel, would give one hundred millions of oysters. These are for the early fall trade, and are aside from the enormous
quantities imported and opened there
The following is the vote in the Urited States Senate on the passage of the river and harbor bill:

THE FIRST STEP.—The arrest of Thomas Collycr and William Radford, owners, or part owners, of the Henry Clay, for "misconduct" and "negligence" in causing the death of one Julia Hay, and others, is the first step that hers been officially taken to bring the parties alleged to be responsible for the recent catastrophe to^Saishmenu The complaint which led to the arrest, we are informed, followed an order from Washington to have the parties accused promptly proceeded against, accord* ing to the Act of Congress "for the better protection of passengers," etc. The bail that has been exacted from the accused is an indication that the storm of indignation against those who could so cooly trifle with and mercilessly sacrifice the Uvea of men, women and children, is not to pass by as the idle wind. The public will watch further proceed* ings closely.—N. Y. Express.
At fSeterviiie Virginia on the 7th int^ a child of Mr. Darliag Um fell into water tea feet deep. The father, at the time, was on the Ohio aide of the river, but bearing the screams of his wife, he jumped into a skiff, crossed the river, dived three time*, and came tip the third time with the child, in time to save its Ufe! A WORD TO BOrs.—Stick to your trade, boys, and learn bow to work if yon wish to be truly independent. Time is no more pitiable tight than a half tnechaaic applying lor work. Dr. John Bull: Dear 8ir—I have seen the most marvel oos cote of one at my patienta, by your valuable modicim —an old lady, who had been afflicted from her childhood frith scrofula, and various diseases of the brain. She war dxty years old. It had run into something like leprosy wd fthe was the moat frightful creature my eyes evei oeheld. I callud in Dr. Mcraddsn, a very fine physician consult with me in relation to her. we came to th» tonclusion tbat it was out of our power to relieve her but going to my office, 1 accidentally picked up one of youi rriurnals, when, on seeing the wonderful cures your'8armjarllla had effected, I resolved to try the experiment in thl sase. I took her two bottles of it, after taking which 1 sercelved a great ehange. I took her some more. She is aow taking the sixth oottle, and I consider her entirely mred. I take great pleasure In recommending your Bar aparilla to the afflicted puhlio.
Tours respectfully, mr« Y# Jonx M. BOSS, M.D. I, ThOinas A. Rbig6,"6f Graves Co., Ky., for the benefit »f mankind generally, do hereby certify, that on or about the 16th day"of October, 1847,1 was attacked with a very Mvere pain in the lower part of the at4gmen, which lasted out a few minutes, and moved into the left hip, and con* tinned exceedingly paigfUl for about five days, during which time I had a very light fever. At the end of that 'ime the fever ceased, and the pain abated for a day or two, ifter which it again returned, and was much worse than Before. During all this time I was under medical treatment. From a short time after I was taken, I was unable so walk or sit up the hip in which the pain was so bad jouunenced rising, until some time in January, when it ourst, and a number of pieces of bone came on —as many is twenty, at least. Some of the pieces were three-fourths
an inch long. Some time after this, a hard knot appeared on my right hip, also one on my right wrist, and iiie on my leg, below my knee. I eootfnuea to get weak ind worse, and pahi made its appearance in my right ihoulder, and would move In my breast and stomach. At this time all persons gave me up to die. A physician then told me that, as a last remedy, I had better use Mil. BULL'S FLUID EXTRACT OF &ABSAPAKILLA. After the use of the second bottle, the knot oa my wrist commenced getting soft. I opened It, and a day or two after, piece of bon« came out. My wrist soon got well, and I ontinued to gain strength. After I used the third bottle, could get no more for soma four weeks, after which time succoeded getting three more bottles. After using the three last bottles, the knot on my hip became soft it was opened, and some corruption ran out, together with a imall piece af bone, and the sore soon got well, and the not entirely diappeared. The eore on my leg also opened, ind apiece of bone cams out. I continued the use of the Sarsaparilia until I used twelve bottles, and am now mtirely well, and able to do daily labor. It may seem strange to some, but I will here state that, during the uimmer of 1818,1 coughed up three pieces of bone, which jan now be seen at the residence of my ancle, Thos. Neal, where I now live, and if any persons doubt this statement, will be happy to converse with them, if they will call on ne. Stood, THOMAS N. IUNQO.
