ANECDOTE OF (irnbbal SCOTT.—An Interesting anecdote is told by Massachusetts officer, of the wonderful foresight of our great chief, whose plans for the whole conquest of Mexico weretnnde history, by altering the tenses from future to past. While at Vera Crue7, General Scott sent for the head of the quarter-master's department, and said to him, "Sir, have you got everything in readiness in your line, which we may waat between this and the Capitalf"— •'Yes sir, 1 have got everything at* army can possibly require.** "Hare you sent along any ten penny nails?"— •'Ten-penny nails! No sir." "Then forward a cask of them.'* The officer was puzzled to conceive what the .General could want with ten-penny nails.— But when the "National Bridge" was blown into a mass of rocks by the Dying enemy, the General's admirable foresight was apparent. The Penobscot lumbermen were soon ready with their timber to repair it the cask of nails was turned out, and the army wis on its road to victory.-—.Fitckburg

We have all
heard of nnd marvelled at the "patience of Job." But what can exceed the patienco of birds when hatching? During a period which continues from three to eight woeks, neither the approach of dunger, nor the calls of hunger, can drive them from the nest. Before* incubation is completed, the female however plump at the beginning, is generally emaciated to a skeleton. Among some tribes the male and female sit alernately, the more equally to divide tbe labor among others, the male provides food for its mate while hatching, or alleviates her toils by his melody from a neighboring bush some join toin the arduous operation, and by the heat, endeavor to acceleu* progress. At times, however, vhc gg* acquire a heat that seems hurt* fjfl to infant life on these occasions they are left to cool and the hen, after a longer or shorter space, according to the weather, again resumes her occupation, with former perseverance and pleasure.—Kidd's

the Hartford Courant describes a new pistol patented by Mr. Christian Sharp, tbe inventor of the celebrated rifle. It is a rifle pistol, light and compact, but of great power, and fires with remark able exactness. The target was pierced at a distance of 300 yards, and we have no doubt the pistol would do execution at a much greater distance.— Though not a revolvor, it can be fired with great rapidity—the inventor informs us that seven shots can be made in less time than the same timber with Colt's pistol, though for a few shots the latter would have the advantage. Attached to it is Sharp's patent primer, one of the simplest, yet most effective inventions ever made for this purpose—it never fails in whatever position the pistol may be placed. ~~~~~~~
GROWTH OF APPLE TRSRS
The Massachusetts Ploughman gives the measurement of four apple trees set five years ago, when three years from the hud. The soil was of quite moderate fertility. Their present circumference one foot from the ground Is fifteen inches each. This rapid growth is owing to careful transplanting, mulching with strawy manure and peat» washing the stems with ponsh ley, and keeping the ground in good ti 11 age.

THE FORCE OF A STEAMBOAT.—The force with which the Henry Clay struck the bank of the river must have been tremendous. Some of the heavy iron work of which the machinery was composed was twisted into contortions and rude shapes, as if it had been mere wire. One of the connecting rods, as large round as a man's leg, was bent up like a fish-hook, and then broken off.

I, Thomas A. Rlngo. of Graves Co., Ky., for the benefit mankind generally, do huruby certify, tnat on or about 16th day of Octobcr, 1847,1 was attacked with a very KwnjMln in the lower part of the abdomen, which lasted out a lew minutes, and moved Into the left hip, and continued exceedingly painful for about five days, during which time 1 had a very light fever. At the end of that -Jme the lever ceased, and the pain abated for a day or two, iftvr which it again returned, and was much worse than oefore. During all this time I WM under medical treatment. From a short time after I was taken, I was unable to walk or sit up the hip in which the pain was so bad jommenccd rising, until some time in Jonua^r, when ourst, and a number of pieces of bone came out—as many is twenty, at least. Some of the pieces were three-fourths »f an Inch long. Some time after this, a hard knot appeared on my right hip, also one on my right wrint, and sne on my leg, below my knee. I coofnuea to get weak ind worse, and pain made its appe&ranco in my right iboulUur, and would moTe In my breast and stomach. At this time all persons gave me up to die. A physician then told me that, as a last remedy, I had better use Ml(. BOLL'S FLUID KXTRACT OF SAKSAPAHILLA. After tbe use of the second bottle, the knot om my wrist commenced getting soft. I opuned it, and a (lay or two tfber, jfece of bone came out. My wrist soon got well, and I •ontlnued to gain strength. After I used the third bottle, could get no mort for some four weeks, after which time succeeded in getting three more bottles. After using the three last bottles, tbe knot on my hip became soft it was opened, and some corruption ran out, together with a mull piece ef bone, and the sore soon got Well, and the not entirely diappeared. The sore on my leg also opened, uid apiece of bone came out. I continued the use of the BarsapariUa until I used twelve bottles, and am now entirely well, and able to do daily labor. It may seem Itrange te some, but will here state that, during the rammer of 1819,1 coughed up three pieces of bone, which •an now be seen at the residence of my Uncle. Thos. Neal, where I now live, and if any persons doubt this statement, I will be happy to converse with them, if they will eall on ine. Signed, THOMAS N. RINGO.

Oan the reader believe, after reading the description of die above numerous cures, that there is still a few human wings, suffering with disease, that refuse to give Bull's Jarsapariila a trial. It Is indeed hard to believe, but nevtrtheless, it is too true. What kind of testimony would it sake to convinee the few remaining disbelievers, that Bull's nedicine will do more even than it promises The doctor xrald produce another and another cure performed by his ncdicine but if the eases published above will not eonrice the sceptical, it is urn less to produce any more, and, ndeed, ft would cost a fortune to publlxh the many c«rtiicotes that have been showered on Dr. Bull.
