A Case of CofJSciKxos.—In a cerSCI »r .v.
exiitingnot nfany miles from the baa of a Certain river, tho members wew» required to sign a pledge not to *si up.* as it is termed, or do any thing eUe that might be supposed to have a tendency, however remote, to Immorality. One evening as the President was calling over the names, to Know whether each member had kept her obligation, a beau* tifut and highly respectable young lady burst into tear*, *nd on beinp questioned as to the catipe, said she feared she had broken the pledge. •Why. what hove you done!' asked ihe President.
Oh!'sobbed the young lady. •Dr.——kissecf me the other night, when he waited on me home from meeting.1 'Oh, well, that is nothing very bnd,* said the President 'kissing d«»e* not make it that you have broken the pledge.' 'O, that isn't the worst of it,'exclaimed the conscientious young lady I kissed him bark again.'
An emoting story is told of SydenhsTJu a, celebrated English physician, ter to illustrate the principle under netderation. without intending to justify the palpable falsehood he thought proper to employ. lie told a wealthy patient, long un der his care, that he could do nothing more for him but that a certain Dr. Rolroson, at Inverness, several hundred miles distant, was remarkably successful in such complaints. Away went the invalid, flushed with hope ot seeing Dr. Robinson. But no one at Inverness had ever seen or heard of such a physician. Full of indignatioh, the gentleman returned to vent his wrath agninst Sydenham, which was expressed in no very measured terms. ••Well," replies Sydenham, "are you in better health?" "Yes am perfectly well but no thanks to you." "No," said Sydenham, "but you may thank Dr. Rubinson for curing yon. I wished to send you on a journey wiib some object of interest in view. I knew it would be of service to you.— Ingoing, you had.Dr. Robinson and his cure before you and in returning you were equally engaged in thinking of scolding me."
No Reputation can be permanent which does not spring from principle, and he who would maintnin a good name should bo mainly solicitous to maintain a good character void of offence toward God and man.
Like those who walk upon a line, if we keep our eyes fixed upon one point, wo may step forward securely whereas an imprudent or cowardly glance on either side will infallibly destroy us.
Feline SAGAciTY.-Instances of canine agacity almost equalizing the intelligence of reasoning beings being frequently noticed, the following incident in pussy's history which occurred in this village, in the family of the writer, is no less worthy of record:
A favorite cat which had become strongly attached to its mistress, and during her confinement to her room by sickness, spent most of its time with her, manifesting by various cat-like demonstrations its love for the lady, wished one day to leave the room, and went to the door, making the customary signals of desire to depart—such as mewing and looking wistfully into the face of its invalid friend, who quietly remarked to pussy that she could not get up to let her out, upon which the cat deliberately ciossed to the other side of the room and mounting a chair seized the bell rope with its teeth, giving a vigorous human pull, which, as the cat probably reasoned, brought this answer of bells*to the door. Upon 'its being opened, Madam Puss, who had returned to her station, walked out.—Lewistoicn

Atlantic Mail Service.—A bill was recently reported in the House of Representatives providing for the conveyance of the mail between Jersey City, and Galawy, Ireland. It provides that the post office department is to contract with any one for the service, on the terms specified, that is $240,000 a year for twenty-four trips. It is not proposed that the lines should have any connexion at all with the navy. It will be chiefly got up as a passenger line and in connexion with projected telegraph lines of communication, it will be a channel for the earliest intelligence. ~~~~~~~
Dean Swift said, with much truth, "It is useless for us to attempt to reason a man out of a thing ho has never been reasoned into."
"Always bo prepared for death."— This was the admonition of a Missouri older as he placed in his son's belt two bowie knives, and a pair of revolvers.
That's thk Worst of it.—Passing up Camp street, soon after the news of tho nomination arrived, our attention was arrested by a crowd—chiefly Locofocos. "The Whigs have made a pretty kettle of fish of it." exclaimed a young sprig of Democracy. "They will be beaten beyond remedy. Semi won't get a singlo Southern State.' responded his auditory. "That may all be true," remarked the veteran politician of the same school. "But roy young friend," continued he, "that ish' the worst of it—1 am very much afraid
he'll not need, them!"

well satisfid with the old gentleman's prediction that we came off, and left them to settle the matter between themselves.—New
Orleans Bee.
Dissipations oftena the soul so much, that the most superficial employment becomes a burden, and the slightest in convenience an agony. The rosea of pleasure seldom last long enough to adorn the brow of him who plucks them: for they are the only roses which do not retain their sweetuess after they have lost their beauty.
A few days good honest
looking country fellow was looking at »he telegraph wires with astonishment A passer by asked bim what he thought of it. Waal. 1 don't exactly know,' repHed the fellow, 'but I am sure they won't get me to ride on the darned thing—them wirea and posts would tear my breeches all to pieces!'

it again returned, and was much worse than
sefore. During all tiis time I was under medical treatment. "From a short time after I was taken, I was unable SO walk or sit up the hip in which the pain wa« «o bad lommenced rising, until some time in Janiu^7, when it Ourst, and a number of pieces of bone came oat—as nian? «s twenty, at least. Some of the pieces were three-fourths jf an inch long. Some time after tills, a hard- knot appeared on my right hip, also one on my right wrist, and ane on my leg, boiow my knee. I coofnued to get weak »nd worse, and pain made ifs appearance in my right jlioulder, and would moTe in my breast and stomach. At this time all persons gafe me up to die. A physician then told me that, as a last remedy, I had better use Allt. BULL'S FtCID EXTKACT OF SARSAPAKIIXA. After the use of die second bottle, the knot On my wrist commenced getting soft. I opened it, and a day or two *fter, ^nce of bone came out. My wrist soon got weU, and 1 10 00 continued to gain strength. After I used the third Jbottle,
R"i could get no more fof some four weeks, after which time 1 succeeded in getting three more bottles. After using the f-®"3 three last bottles, the knot on my hip became soft It wa» 3.80 jpened, and some corruption ran out, together with a 5.00 miall piece of bone, and the sore soon got voli. and the 16,00 Knot entirely diappeared. It mapr seem strange to some, but will here state that, during the «ummtr of 1849, I coughcd up three pieces of bone, which 3an now be seen at the residence of my .uncle, Thos. Neal,, where I now live, and if any persons doubt this statement, I will be happy to converse with them, if they will call on ae. Signed. TllOXAS N. KIN GO.

Can the render believe, after reading the description of she above numerous cures, that there is still a few human jeings. miffering with disease, that refuse to give Bull's iarsaparilla a trial. It is indeed hard to believe, but tiev»rtheless, it Is too true. What kind of testimony would ft sake to convince the few remaining disbelievers, that Hull's nodirine will do more even than It promises The doctor jould produce another and another'*ure performed by his nedicine but if the cases published above will not conriro the sceptical, it Is useless to produce any more, and, ndeed, it would cost a fortune to publish the many rertlicates that haye been showered on Dr. Dull.
