A dreadful riot took place at Stockport. on Tuesday night, between the Roman Catholics and Protestants—sixty persons were carried wounded to the hospital one yras killed, and several houses torn down. The Catholic chapel was sacked the organ, alter, and fur* niture, were burned as a bonfire nothing was left standing but the bare wnlls. The military were called out, aod succeeded at last in restoring order.

The town is now occupied by cavalry it being reported that the Catholics from Manchester and other towns intended 10 retaliate. The riot grew out of ill feeling engendered by the Queen's proclamation against Catholic processions.

An extra morning Chronicle announces that, during Thursday fourteen persons were arrested in a detached house, in the Rue Reine Blanche, Paris, and there arrests were followed by tnore but all enveloped in mystery. The machine contained fourteen barrels capable cf containing each about twenty bullets, and their firing in a wrong direction, it is aeded. would have been utterly impossible.—Note bv a correspondent says that this statement is given in the papers with every semblance of truth.
