iMotTi TNUaeBt of Ik* Catholic Hell* BlM ii Meiio®. In honorable contrast to thft tyranny tfid UHberaliiy oftha New Hampshire to cofrcos, among whom Franklin Pierco iU a leader and an oracle, is the mag* nanimous conduct of Scott to the Catholic population of conquered Mexico.—

Ai-the bead of a victorious army—having Spanish, French and British example to justify thelelzuie of church property, and the appropriation of the gdld and silver equipage employed by an enemy fn the celebration of worship Scott, like a true man as he is, sheltered the Mexican Catholic Church under t*»e shield of toleration, guarded its pn perty from violation, and treated its forms with respect. |By the General Order N6 287, issued from the National Palace, he published a code of laws for the govern* tnent of the city of Mexico particularly addressed.however. tothe Americans. The 2d section of the orders, embra* cing the offences for which our troops would be rigorously punished, was as Jpllows: "Assassination, murder, poisoning, rope, or the attempt to commit either, malicious stabbing or maiming malicious assault and battery, robbery, theft

the vsonto desecration of churches or other religious edifices, and fixtures the interruption of religious ceremon ies.

and the destruction, except by order of a superior officer, of public or private property are such offences."

Section 15, of this Order, was as follows: "This splendid capital—its

churches

and religious worship its convents and monasteries

its inhabitants and proper

ty, are moreover placed under the special safeguard of the taith and honor of the American army."

Great as a Warrior, and great as a Statesman, Scott is made completely great as a Man by such magnanimty and justice. How vast the tolerant Soldier looms along side the representative of the Catholic hating Democracy of New Hampshire!—Buffalo

Some very broad estimates have been made iu regard to foreign population of the United States. The Germans and decendants of German parents have been stated variously,at from two to four millions, and the Irish and their decendents, at from four to seven millions.— It wras recently stated in the British Uouie of Lords, by the Bishop of Casb», el that 7,500,000 persons of Irish blood resided in the Uni ed States. This is contradicted by a correspondent of the London Times.who gives the number at a million and a quarter. In this connection we may state that according to an annual report from the American Department of State, the total number of immigrants into the United States since 1790, and their decendents in 1850, is given at 4.350,944. The complete report on the census says a contemporary in referingto certain statistics, will supply an exact classification of our population by nativity, as well as by age and race. In the meantime it may be said (hat the census tables show the actual number of foreigners arrived in the United Stales from 1790 to i860—GO years to have been 2.758.000 of whom it is not likely that more tliau 2,00C.000 survived in June of the latter year. In the two years that have since elapsed, about 700.000 have arrived so that the whole population amounting to 25.500,000, 2.700,000 are of foreign birth. About one belt of the entire immigration into the United States for the last twenty years, has been of the Irish pqople about one fourth German and the remaining quarter consists of persons belonging to nearly every nation on the face of the earth. It may be asRumed, therefore, that we have 1,350, 000 Irish, and, 675,000 Germans among our population.

Mr. Brown, an English traveler, whose adventures in the East, have just been ublished in England, says everything

?.

eminine is so rigorously excluded from one of the monasteries of Asia Minor, that there are many grey-headed monks there who never beheld a woman.— The very dogs and cats are al! obliged, by immutable law, to be male. One of them inquired, what sort of human creatures are women?" Mr. Brown very ungailantly congratulated the unhapy man on his safety from "the dangerous allurements of those sirens of real life, who had assaulted so many anchorites, from St. Anthony down to St. Kevin, and who, he told him, were but ugly likenesses of the pictures of Virgins in the Convent Churches. This was no extravagant compliment to the sex, for the Greeks are too much afraid

of

idol

atry, to represent any such "eyes of most unholy blue as beam from the can* vassofthe Italian masters." All their pictures of Saints are in a style of traditional and conventional ugliness.

A lady wrote to her eon, requesting him to look out for a young lady, res* pectably connected, possssed of various elegant accomplishments and acquirements, skilled in the languages, a proficient in music, easy and graceful in mannera, affectionate and kind in dispo« sition and above all of ardent piety, and an offer to her of $300 a year for her services as governess in her family. The son's reply was: "My dear mother, I have been long looking out for such a person as you describe, and when 4 4n?e the good fortune to meet with her. I propose to make her an offer, not of S300 a year, to become, not your governess, bat my wife."

Fourteen passengers, ticketed from Boston alone to Madison, came down on the Htxwier State last evening, just before sundown. They here received tickets through to St. Louis, wbere they will arrive in about five days out from Boston. The travel by this expeditious route, which is now daily increasing, will be immense when the completion of the railroad from Tin* Haute to St. Louis shall make it the greatest thoroughfare in the Untcatu'*— Madison

Dr. ,lonn Bull: Dear Sir—I have seen the most marvel tOus cure of one of my patients, by your valuable medicint —an old lady, who had been afflicted from her childhood with scrofula, and various diseases of the brain. She wat lixty years old. It had run into something like leprosy uid she was the most frightful creature my eyes evei oeheld. I called in Dr. McVadden, a very flne physician consult with me in relation to her.

inclusion that it wss out of our power to relieve her but in going to my offlce, I accidentally picked up one of youi Journals, when, on seeing the wonderful cures your Ssrsaoarllla bad effected, I resolved to try tbe experiment in thif Hue. I took her two bottles of it, after taking which 1 perceived a great change. I took her some more. She Is now taking the sixth bottle, and I consider her entirely jureil. I take great pleasure in recommending your Bar laparilla to the afflicted publlo. -.Yours respectfully,

mankind generally, do hereby certify, that on or about ie ItJth day of Octobcr, 1847, 1 was attacked with a very vere pnln in tho lowt'r part of the abdomen, which lasted out a few minutes, and moved into the left hip, and continued exceedingly painful for about five days, during irhich time I had a very light fever. At the end of that 'ime the fever ceased, and the pain abated for a day or two, ifter which It again returned, aad was much worse than Before. During all tfcis time I was under medical treat* ment. From a short time after I was taken, I was unable lo walk or sit up the hip in which the pain was so bad sommnnced rising, until some time in January, when it ourst, and a number of pieces of bone came out—as many is twenty, at least. Some of the pieces were three-fourths jf an inch long. Some time after this, a hard knot appeared on my right hip, also one on my right wrist, and ane on my leg, below my knee. I continued to get weak ind worse, and pain made its appearance in my right ihoulder, and would move in my breast and stomach. At this time all persons gave me up to die. A physician then told me that, as a last remedy. I had better use Mil. BULL'S FLUID EXTRACT OF SAR8APAKILLA. After the use of the second bottle, the knot on my wrist cotncnonced getting soft. I opened it, and a day or two after, 1 piece of bone come out. My wrist soon got well, and I continued to gain strength. After I used the third bottle, could get no more for some four weeks, after which time succeeded in getting three more bottles. After using the three last bottles, the knot on my hip became soft it was opened, and some corruption ran out, together with a imall piece of bone, and the sore soon got well, and the snot entirely diappeared. The sore on my leg also opened, ind apiece of bone came out. I continued tbe use of the Sanaporilla until I used twelve bottles, and am now entirely well, and able to do daily labor. It may seem strange to ttome, but will here state that, during the lummer of 1849,1 coughed up three pieces of bone, which san now be seen at the residence of my uncle} Thos. Ncal. where now live, and if nay persons doubl Uus statement, 1 will be happy to converse with them, if they will call on lie. Signed, THOMAS N. RINGO.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my

hand, and caused the seal of tbe County Court of

Can the reader believe, after reading the description of ihe above numerous cures, that there is still a few human Mings, suffering with disease, that refuse to give Bull's Jarsaparilla a trial. It is indeed hard to believe, but nevertheless, it is too true. What kind of testimony would it ake to convince tlft few remaining disbelievers, that Bull's nedicine will do more even than it promises Tbe doctor lould produce another and another cure performed by his nedicine but if tho cases published above will not consice tho sceptical, it is useless to produce any mors, and, ndeed, it would cost a fortune to publish the many certiIcates that have been showered on Dr. Bull. HE undersigned manufactures and keeps constantly on nand a large and general assortment of Japanned. Ornamental, Bronzed, and Pressed Tinware, which he offers to sell to Country Merchants, Stove and Tin Dealers, Pedlars, and otfiers, at such priees as wi II yield a handsome profit to the buyer. Every article he offers for sale is made in nis own shop, and under his personal superintend*nee, from the raw material. And in this particular he claims to have it in his power to oner inducements, far superior to any other dealer in the West.

Having recently made large additions to his manufacturing department in the way of room, machinery, and a greater number of workmen, he hopea to be able to aupply the increasing demand.

Dealers who have oeen accustomed to making their purchases in the eastern cities, will find that they can do equally as well here in point of price ana quality, and in addition to thia they can always buy juat what they want, and may fill up their atocka aa they may desire, without the inconvenience of waiting six weeks or two months for a supply from the East.

LARD LAMPS.

The undersigned would also call attention ol dealers to his Improved Oxygen Lard Lamp. This Lamp is so constructed that the entire top can be removed for the purpose of trimming and cleaning. The objection to this Lamp heretofore hss been, that they could not be clesned, and it was with difficulty that they could be trimmed.— Tnese objections are entirely overcome in the improvement In addition to this they are much quicker, and of course can be sold at a reduced price this season. They are acknowledged to be tbe best and cheapest Lard Lamp ever introduced
