Incidents of the Bunting of the Griffith. The Fibb—Fated Boat.—Many

press tho greatest surprise that so many ®R persons should have lost their lives from the Griffith. The boat was near the shore, but a slight wind, and the water .. warm. The only explanations given are. that the boat was well on fire before the passengers were awakened from their sleop—the fire burned with the most extraordinary rapidity—the small boats were destroyed, and the panic among the crowd of emigrants, communicating itself to others, wassogreatas scarcely to be conceived.

Remarkable.—I).

#112

Coolness.—A

ex

Providence or Fate seemed adverse. The motion of the boat and the slight breeze enveloped all the after part of the boat in flames in an unprecedented short time. When whithin a half a mi'e of shore, she struck a little hillock of sand and stopped. Had she passed one rod either to the right or left, she would have run nearly to the shore before striking, and nearly all the passengers been saved. After she struck, the engine and wheels continued to go, the engineer being unable to reach ths engine, in consequence of the flames. The current of water thus produced, drew many who jumped overboard under the wheel and to their long home.

When the motion of the boat ceased, together with an apparent sydden change of the wind, the flames were blown with great violence directly on the passengers on the bow-c the boat. It was this, with previous panic that caused them to leap overboard in such masses and in such confusion. The moment she struck, the Captain ordered the men to throw overboard the wood, which was the only loose floats that could then be got at. Such was the confusion but little was thrown over.

Causk

of thr

Firr.—Theonly

expla

nation wo have heard of the origin of the fire, is the statement that the tanks for water, around the4 pipes where they pass through the decks, were dry, the water having been drawn ofF some ten days since, for some cause not stated.

One of the passengers, who was early awake, thinks the fire did not take from the smoke-pipes, but from the after pnrt of the boilers.

Mr. Strbbins.—We

of the passengers, that Mr. Stebbins, of Maumee, the first engineer, was perhaps the most useful man in the terrible times on the Griffith. lie stood by his post till the Inst moment possible. When she struck, he immediately swam to the shore being a man of great physical vigor, he was tho first to land, and accidentally fell 5n with a small skiff*on the beach, which he instantly launched, and put off* in, to tho burning wreck. Ho picked up and brought to shore three loads, which constituted a large portion of all saved.

Remarkable Incident.—Among

The Emigrants.—With

M. Reed, of Belle-

fontaine, took off his coat and boots, dropped himself from the bow of tho Griffith, just as she struck the sand bar, and swam to the shore, near half a mile, never before having swam ten feet in his life, and not knowing that ho was capable of swimming one rod. He thought to himself that if others could swim, thero was no reason why he could not. He made tho effort, and succeeded beyond his expectations. This incident shows what coolness and decision will do for a man at such a time. Mr. Reed lost

fron his vest pocket, and had

the good fortune to have it picked up floating near tho shore. Lucky.—C. F.

Holly, of Savannah,

Missouri, in swimming ashore, lost a belt containing all his money, #2,300, twice, and recovered it again. Losing it a third lime, he was so much exhaust* ed that he concluded to let go, and content himself with saving his lite. As good luck would have it, man immediately behind him, picked it up, and brought it safely to shore. He offerer! the man $300, which was declined $100, however, was accepted, the finder having been left by the accident entirely destitute.

years old. When he awoke

and got dressed, after the alarm, the girl was missing, and by diligent search he was unable to find her. After the boat struck, and all hope of remaining long* er on board was over, he took off his

thick coat and put on a linen one,

Miss Murry overboard, and jumped

after her, and swam with har to a float sufficient to support her, at a distance from the burning boat far enough to be out of danger from the fire, and then started for the shore himself, confident 1 the yourtr lady would be safe
