ORIGIN OF COAL.
The immense beds of bituminous coal found in the valley of the Ohio fill the mind with wonder. Age after age, successive growths of plants, springing up in the same region, were entombed beneath thick strata of shale, to the depth of more than 1,000 feet while beneath the whole lay the bed of an ocean, floored with fossil salt. Indications of coal are found at intervals, across the great valley, from the Alleghany to the Rocky
Mountains. It is found near the surface in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri, and without doubt, may be found beneath the territory deposites [sic] which form the substratum of the great prairies in the central and northern parts of the Western States. As low down as New Madrid, on the Mississippi, coal was thrown up from beneath the bed of the river, by the great earthqurke of 1812—a sufficient proof of its continuation in the most depressed part of the great valley. That the coal is of vegetable origin, no one who has read much on the subject, or personally examined the coal beds, will deny. Time was when it was considered a peculiar mineral product, formed in the same manner and at the same time with the rocks that surround it. The product of its chemical analysis, being altogether vegetable, and the artificial formation of coal from wood by Sir James Hall, have silenced all doubts on the subject. The only mys-
tery [illegible] from such vast quantities of
vegetable matter could be accumulated and grown on the spot where they were buried. That they grew in general on the surface now occupied by the coal appears certain from the perfect state in which the most delicate leaves and stems are preserved. Had they been transported by currents of water, and espe ciallyfrom any distance, it is hardly possible that they should not have received more damage. The climate of that period must have been more humid than at present, as many of the plants are of those families which now grow only in tropical climates and as the laws of nature never change, this may deemed a correct inference.—<Silliman's Journal>. ~~~~~~~
BOILED SOAP. ..
To begin the soap put three or four pounds of fat or grease into a large ket tie over a brisk fire, and melt it, stirring it well with a stick. When the fat has melted, pour in two or three gallons of strong ley gradually stirring it well (and always the one way,) till the fat and ley are thoroughly mixed. Then moderate the fire land boil it slowly and steadily— if it boils to hard it will go over. As it boils continue to fill it up with ley till tho soap becomes of a proper consistency. If in boiling the fat disappears en 4irely from the top, add more fot. If there should happen to be too much fat, it can be skimmed off when the soap is oold. Try the soap by occasionally ta king out some on a dish, and setting it in the open air. It should be of a bright brown color, and clear and thick as a jel ly when cold. Afier having boiled sev era I hours, if it still remains liquid, in trying it In the plate add a little cold wa ter to what you are cooling, for the purpose of making it jelly. You will then be able to ascertain how much cold water must be added to tlmt in the kettle, for tho same purpose, it boing evident that the ley is too strong, is an improvement to throw in a pound or two of rosin while the soap is boiling, as it prevents the soap from eating the hands when washing with it. When it becomes a thick jeUy and no grease appears about it, if you wish to make hard soap, stir lino salt into it, allowing one pint of salt to three gallons of soap. Let it boil for ten minutes after the salt is put in, then try the soap by taking out a small por tion and setting it to cool. If it does not seem sufficiently stiff, or likely to harden well, add more salt, and give it another boil up. Then take the soap out of the kettle and put in tubs to cool when it becomes quite hard cut it out and lay it on boards to cool in the shade.—Ohio Cultivator.
SHEARING AND SACKING WOOL.
This sboulr! not be done sooner than the season will admit, as the sheep would be in danger of taking cold. Wool intended to be sent to a distant market, may be put up and pressed in bales after the manner of cotton, or it may be crowded into sacks holding from 200 to 250 pounds. If designed to be shipped on a long voyage, it would be more economical to press it into square bales, as it would then occupy less bulk, and consequently effect a saving of freight. But in the interior of a country where the conveniences for baling are not always at hand, sacks may be employed, made of 40-inch "burlaps," or 45-inch "gunny cloth, seven and a half feet long. Each of these sacks may be made of a piece of cloth five yards long, by doubling the ends until they meet, and sowing up the sides with twine. The mouth of a sack may next be sewed to a strong hoop of wood or iron (diameter 25 inches for the burlaps, aud 28 inches for the gunny cloth then let its body through a circular hole, two inches less in diameter than the hoop, cut in an upper floor of the building, or of a temporary scaffold erected for the purpose, where it can swing dear beneath. One man may then ge into the sack, while another hands him the fleeces, which he should place in regular layers, pressing them down in the mean time, with his feet, until it is filled. After this, the sack may be slightly rais* ed, the hoop disengaged, tho mouth of the sack sewed up with twine, and the operation is complete.—Am. Ag.
Charcoal Dust, a Top*Dressing for Onions, Ac. In a communication on this subject, from Mr. Thomas Smith to the secretary of the London Horticultural Society, it is remarked, in substauce, that Charcot dust, in a state of minute subdivision or pulverisation, was spread upon the ground to the depth of half an inch before sowing the seed, and thoroughly mixed with the surface soil, by scuffing with a spade. Six year's experience had convinced the writer that this material is not only a remedy for the grub evil, but that it operates as aa effectual preventive against moodiness in onions, as well as of the disease called "clubbing," in roots of cabbages and! cauliflowers. Charcoal dust is also a moat efficient manure when applied as!

There is but one genuine preparation of Wru CHERRY—that is Dr. Swnyne'R, all othere, by a little inquiry in the quarters where they originate, will be found to be "fictions aud counterfeit." The great and increasing demand for the "original article" has induced a host of unprincipled men to put forth spurious mixtures, and to give currency to their nostrums, attach the name of Wild Cherry, thinking to borrow a ruputation from that already established.
