that the subscribers (Mathts Den man, Robert Patterson and John Filson) hod "determined to lay off a town" on "a tract of land opposite the mouth of the Licking river, on the north-west side of the Ohio." ,411pon that "iraci of land" now stands the city, of Cincinnati, containing a population of 100,000 souls, the largest city Sn the great South-West!
^fe-.lu 1780, the legislature of Virginia passed "an act for establishing the town of Louisville." "John Todd, jr., Sicplien Trigg, George Slaughter, John
Floyd, William Pope, George Meriwether, .Andrew Iloynes and James Sullivan, gentlemen," were the trustees to lay off the town on a tract of one thousand acres of land, which had been granted to John Connolly by the British government.-— Kach purchaser was to build on his own lot "a dwelling house, sixteen feet by twenty, at least, with a brick or stone chimney, to bo finished within two years from the day of sale!"
In December, 1780, there were only thirty people in Louisville!! Now, in I860, our population may be safely put down at CO,000 souls.

on the square where the Court-
Tuo-Koiiang, Emperor of China, has heard of the discovery of gold in California, and is determined that his subjects shall not bo tempted there. The last India mail brought a copy of a new paper, just issued at Pekin, which contains an or(l nanoe of the Emporor forbidding any of his subjects to emigrate either to California or the Siato of Costa Rica. Why ho has included the latter it does not appear. Large numbers of the Celestials have alrerdy made their nppenrnnce in tho land of promise, and prove to be among the most industrious of the population.
A Mr. Napier, of Swansea, England, has announced to the Scientific Institution of that town that he has discovered a new explosive substance, which he designates white powder, having ten times the force of common gun powder. It is composed of the following ingredients:
one part yellow prussiate of potash, well dried; one part sugar, well dried; two parts chloride of potash. Those materials are finely ground, separately, and then intimately mixed. ~~~~~~~

The Faculties, for intellectual abilities, moral worth and professional acquirements, will compare favorably with the moat distinguished in our country. The tnedical faculty constitutes an anomaly in this or any other country—all of them are able lecturers and the best of teachers.
Those who will contemplate our geographical position, and the extant of our population, can have no doubt as to the eligibility of our situation lor an enterprise of the kind. As to health, including all seasons of the year, we deny that ANY OTHER CITY HAS MORE.
The first class of the Law and Medical Departments of this Institute were small, but the gentlemen composing them nre talented and in the highest degreo respectable—a favorable omen for ths future prosperity of the Institute.
Tliat the public may be satisfied of tho permanency of this school, we feel it our duty to state, that the Trustees and Faculty form a UNIT in action, which augurs well for its future success and that the peculiar internal organization which connects them can otbe interrupted. 30y E. VV. M. KING, President of the Memphis Institute.
