clock, jtnd Justice Shaw remarked tothfe prisoner if he had anything more to say tothajury before he charged them upon the general features of the case, he iiad liberty ttfc&y It. Tl!% prisoner treyse and addressed the jury in & few wprdft. He commenced in rather a confused manner, without addressing directly either the bench or jury, and said ."I have desired to enter into an ex planation of the complicated network of circumstances which, by my peculiar position, the government has thrown aI round me, ana which, in nine cases out of ten, are completely distorted, and probably nine-tenths could be satisfactorily explained. All the points of the testimony have been placed in tlie hands of my counsel, by whom my innocence could be firmly established. Acting entirely under their direction I have seal-* ed my lips during my confinement, trusting myself entirely to them. They have not deemed it necessary, in their superior wisdona^this was said in «n ironical toneV to bring forward the evidence whicn was to exonerate me from a variety of these acts# The government ha* brought whatever consummate ingenuity could suggest against me, and I hope it will not have an undue influence upon my jury. 1 will not allude to many of the charges. There is one which touches me, and that is the letter which has been produced, and it is not the first 1 have read in the daily prints, which are distributed in my deptmments, and vari ^j$U^)us publications respecting them one stating that had, after the disappearance of Dr. Parkrnpn purchased a quan tlty of oxalic acid to remove the stains of blood, and instantly it occurred to me that this parcel might be saved and pro duced when necessary. For several days Mrs. Webster had requested some acid for domestic use, and as my wife had repeatedly laughed at me bccause 1 had not bought it, 1 bore it in mind that afternoon, and had gone into Thayer's store ulflder the Revere Houseand made the purchase and waited for the Cam bridge hourly, and then jumped into the omnibus with the bundle. went home and gave the bundle to my wife, and af« terwards when I heard so much said about the bundle it flashed on my mind in a moment that this must be the bundle.
It was to this bundle and not to any doc ument that I referred in the direction to my wife. As regards the nitrate of copper, in the usual lectures preceding my nrreat, I had occasion to use tho influence of chemical agents in producing d^tnges of various subjects among others upon gnsses. 1 hud prepared a large quantity of oxnlic acid gas. A large jar was filled with gas In order to produce the change from a dark color to orange ttud also on air, on great heat being applied to the jar, the jar was drawn thro' water. As to the nitrate of copper of the laboratory it was spilt accidentally b^
quantity used by me in my lectures tween the day of Dr. Pnrkman'g disappearance and my own arrest. I might go off and explain a variety of circurnKiances which have been distorted. My counsol huve pressed me to keep calm, nnd my calmness has been mnde to beur ngninst me, but my trust has been fn my God and my own innocence. In regard to money I must say a word. The money I paid Dr. Parkmanon the afternoon of Friday, 1 kept in a trunk in my house in Cambridge, but unfortunately no one ever saw mo take it out, thereforo I can only give my word that such is a fast.— Several years ago I had students who wore in the habit of bolng in my laboratory and injured my apparatus, therefore 1 prepared everything by my own hands, and that is tho roason why I excluded persons from my laboratory. As regards my whereabouts frem the time of Dr. P*s. disappearance, I have put into my counsel's hands satisfactory information which will account for every day I haiT spent during that week—every day and every hour—I nover was absent. As to being seen by Mr. Sanderson I was at homo every evening. One thing has been omitted by my couhsol, that on the Friday on which the alleged murder was seemed to have been committed, I had purchased Humboldt's new work, "Cosmos," and while waiting for an omnibus atepped Into Brigham's to take a mutton chop, and on coming out to take tho omnibus had forgotten my book, but after nty arrest remembered the placo where I had left it and mentioned it to my counsel. They had sent to Mr. Brig* ham's. Tho book had btsen found.'*
He then took his seat but In a moment arose and said "I will say one word more, I felt very much distressed by the production of those anonymous letters, more so than by anything that has occurred during the trial. I call my God to witness that if it were the last hour of my life I believe I nevor wrote those letters. Since the trial commenced a letter has been received from this very •Civis'by one of my counsel. If this person has any spark of humanity I call tipon him to come forward. A notiee to this effect has been put in she papers."
Professor Webster having said this sat down. A deep impression was made upon tho jury, court, and spectators, by tho solemn earnestness exhibited by the prisoner it* his remarks.
CorfWnoS.— The

But to read the twattle, about spiritual cotnmanic.iiioD, &£-. wiilb which theeotiltnns of respectable pipers have been crowded is enough to disgust sensible men. The New York Tribune has gone into the matter by wholesale, and we find even in the staid Hunker Albany Arrtu, a grave editorial, combatting the spiritual claims of the "Rappinga." Such things .are belittling to the press, and ought ta be left to nervous old women of both sexes. A grave argument upon such a subject, either on the one side or the other, at this time—or a serious notice of any Kind, eshibits more verdancy than we should like to father, and we hope, for the credit of the craft, that our cotemporcries down east will turn tfieir attention to a more important and sensible subject, and hsve done with boring their readers in relation to thia silly matterBuffalo Commercial Advert iter. *r

A man purchased a bottle of your Vermifuge the other day tor his child, and by its use it discharged 63 of the largest worms he had ever seen. It is somewhat difficult to get the people to try it, as they have been so often gulled by naemous and worthless worm medicines. Yours being so very pleasant to the taste, at the same time effectual, I shall be able to dispose of a large quantity. Respectfully, yours, dtc.,

LM&RTANTCAUTION TO ALLINVALIDS AND FRIENDS OF INVALIDS. There is but one cenuine preparation of Wttt CHERRY— that is Dr. Swayne's all others, by a little inquiry in the quarters where they originate, will be found to be "fictions aud counterfeit." The great and increasing demand for the "original article*' has induced a host of unprincipled men to put forth spurious mixtures, and to give currency to their nostrums, attach the name of Wild Cherry, thinking to borrow a imputation from that already established. As you value your lives, beware of them. Some are called 'Balsams,1 'Cherry Pectoral,1 'Wild Cherry and Tar,'
4Sar-
sapsrilla and Wild Cnerry Bitters,1 and a host of others, who, in some way, attach the name of Wild Cherry. No one ever thought of using this namefor an article of their own until it-had become established and known as belonging to one of the greatest remedies ever discovered^ for the benefit of the human family.
That remedy ia Dr. Sway no's Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, the original and only genuine. Remember, it is put up in square bottles, covered with a beautiful wrapper, (steel engraving.) with the portrait of Dr. Swoyne thereon: alq^Ls signature SWAYNE'S CELEBRATED VERMIFUGE, "Ji safe and effectual rrmetfyfor Worms, Dys pepsia, Cholera Morbus, sickly or Dyspep 3 tic Children or Adults, and the most *f} useful Family Medicine ever qf~ ss fered 'to the ptMic.
This remedy is one whiflv has prsv«d successful for along time, and it is universally acknowledged by all who have tried it to be far superior, (beingsor very pleasant to the taste, at the ssme time effectual) to any other medicine ever em iloyed in diseases for which it is recommended, is not only destroys worms, hut it invigorate* the whole system. It is harmless in its effects and the health of the patient is always improved bvits use even when no worms are discovereh
WBEWARE OF M1STAKES.-C# REMEMBER: Dr. Swayne* Vermifuge is now put ip in square bottles, (having recently been changed covered with a beautiful wrapper, (steel engraving,) with the portrait of Dr.Swayne thereon engraved.
