A SAILOR'S HUNT.—Going to see my father the other day, he asked me to tako a voyage a hunting with him. So when the swabber had rigged the horses, they brought me one to stow myself on board—one that they told me was in such a right trim, she would go as fast on any track ns a Faulesome cutter.— So 1 got aloft, and capped myself athwart the ship, and made as much way as the best of them—and to the wind-ward of a gravel pit, we espied a haro at auchor and so wo weighed nnd bore away. Just as I had overtaken her, my horse came plump ashore against a rock—tho back stay broke—she pitched me over the forecastle, came keel upwards, and unshipped my shoulder, and hang me if ever I sail on land, privateering again.
you would not think of going 10 bed you would retire to rest. Nor would you build a house—you would erect it.
A novel match took place a few weeks ago near Hereford, England, in which a young gentleman undertook for a wager to tap up a saucer of milk in less time than a cat. They both commenced at the same time, but on account of the gentleman being seized with a violent fit of laughter, which greatly impeded Ms progress, the cat was enabled to obtain a great lead however, tho gentleman soon came up with her, and won by two table spoonfulls.
"Hallo!" ejaculated an anxious guar* diantohis lovely nice, as he entered the parlor.and saw her on the sofa, in iho arms of a swain, who had just pop ped the question and sealed it with a smack, ''Hallo! what's the time of day* now?" "I should think it was about half past twelve," wast the cool reply "you sets we are almost one."
Five or six large American eagles settled down upon the ice in our bay this afternoon, about forty rods from the wharves, when they stood in a group, and doubtless meditated upon the prospoet before them, and consulted together about the inroads the hand of civilization was making upon their ancient domain,—Sanduskittn*
The challenge of the Pacha of Egypt to run his Arabian horses against any thing that can be brought against them, on a bet of $60,000, or five times that sum. it is understood, will be accepted in England. The race is to be on a travelled road, in Egypt, which is not hilly though undulating, and rather stony. The distance is to be twelve miles. Charles A. Murray, British Consul at Cairo, informs his friend Greville, of London, that the horses of the Pacha are purely Arabian—that they are not probably so fast as the race horses of England, though they are of extraordinary bottom. He thinks the English second class horses might beat them on a smooth turf track, in a race of three miles but cautions his friend not to be too confident of winning on the stony road, where the sand is up to the fetlock apart of the distance, and the race is for twelve miles. He says the Pacha's horses are shod with a plate that completely covers the bottom of the foot, so as to protect it from the stones. He thinks the race may be run in one year from next February, and advises that the English horses be in Egypt as early as November for training. The Pacha will run only one race and he is determined that it shall settle the question as to the superiority of the English or Arabian horses he gives fair warningof this, and calls upon the Englishmen to bring on their best blood, and not say after the race that they have something beuei'. Greville writes that the Pacha will not ullow Englishmen to see the horses which he intends to run in the they are two horses and two mares his competitors may run any number they. 11 A IvI Al\
please against these four. Greville suggests that horses trained for rough riding, the "steeple chase,"dsc., would be more likely to triumph on the rough and sandy road, than the regularly trained blood horse of England, whose tremendous but more delicate«tride gets advantage on the smooth track of the race course.
"Nothing more excites the super
stitious fears of a sailor than a cat thrown overboard or a corpse that is not nnd very shortly after death occurs it is usual to transfer the body from the ship to the deep. On one occasion a man, with concussion of the brain, who had lost the power of speech and motion overheard what must have been to him the most interesting conversation that ever fell upon his fears—a discussion between his brother and the captain of the vessel, as to whether he should bo immediately consigned to the waves, or be carried to Rotterdam to be buried on shore. Luckily their predilections were for a land funeral and, although a colloquy so alarming might havo been expected to completo the injury to the poor man's brain' he recovered from the double shock of fright and disease."
