Newark Daily Advertiserx in a recent
letter, says:
"Mr. Winthrop now stands better before the country than he ever sttwl before. His position was a deservedly high one but bis patriotic and manly course here has raised him still higher. He has shown a wisdom, forbearance, patriotism and good sense that must forever do him honor. Greater honors are in store for him, should his valuable l^fe be spared. The lovers of the Union, in all parts of tho Confederacy, %ill not see a gallant American saenfied because of his attachment to their dearest interests. Last Saturday's proceedings, in the hall of the House, will never be forgotten by tho intelligent men of the coanurV. Mark the prediction.1*
Tho \V*shin#on Union say*. "Thn find annual message of General Taylor is before the country, and we hazard mera nothing in saying that it has been read with feelings of mortification and dt#nppointment bv the best friends of the President." \Ve agree irklr the Union that it "haxards nothing** in making that assertion or anv other. Congressional Committees. The political, or rather sectional, character of the standing committees of the House of Representatives will ap pear from the following statement.
The SIaVe States send 91 Representatives to Congress, the Free States 140. There are 37 standing committees in the House, nineteen of which have Chairmen from the Slave States—eighteenfrom the Free States. A large portion of these committees however, has no po litical power or influence whatever the important, influential committees being, Ways and Means, Claims. Commerce, Public Lands. District of Columbia,* Manufactures, Indian Affaire, Naval Affairs. Foreign Relations, Territories, Post Office and Post Roads, Military Affairs. Judiciary.f
Of these thirteen importaht House Committees, nine hnve Chairmen from the Slave States, the Free States four— seven of the thirteen have a majority of members from the Slave States, and in every instance, save one, where the Chairman is from a Free State, the majority of members composing the com-! mittee are from the Slave States! and I yet there is constant and continuous complaint and denunciation from the Slavo States, of Northern intolerance and aggression!—Cin.Gaz.
We learn that the Kentucky Legislature owes its early organization to the patriotic, self-sacrificing efforts of R. F. Baird. the emancipation iNjpresentative from ottr city. After ihr$*Por four ineffectual ballots were taken, Mr. Baird offered. amid much noise and confusion, a resolution that "the Free'Soilers leave the House,'' and—out he went! A speaker was elected on the very next ballot, and the IIouso,a| oncc adjourned.—Lou. Courier.
