The "California Plot."

"We have very little doubt about the

existence of a plot to introduce slavery

into the territory. Several politicians of

both parties, went to California immediately after the close of the last Congress,

and made themselves very conspicuous

on the stump. Knowing that an express

recognition of slavery was entirely out of the question, they endeavored to per

suade the immigrants into a Constitution

that should be silent on tho subject. We find the above in the Evening Post, credited to ihe Philadelphia Public Ledger. We now demand of the Ledger, what we have vainly required of the Post, some evidence thai any politician of the Whig party "endeavored to persuade the immigrants into a Constitution that should be silent on the subject" of slavery. If it cannot produce such evidence, will not the Ledger feel bound to rctract the calumny? That the Post will refrain from bearing false witness otj this subject, we have no longer a hope.—-N. Y.
