BY WILLIAM H. CRANKING,
The Sunday was stormy. I heard a little girl speak impatiently, because the rain prevented her from going to church. Her father said. "Can you command the clouds can you give order to the air and sun can you direct God will you go to Him and say, 'Make it fair, for I wish to go up to the temple?'
And a Spirit said, •'Art thou not a wilful child, to be dishartenecf because the late bright morning is shut out by clouds and tempests? Be more than resigned. be cheerful. The only Manhood is selfforgetfulness offer now in silence the worship of serene trust, of assured faith, of a charity that swears fidelity ro Manhood, and seals the sign of the cross with the blood of heroes and the tears of martyrs. Live only and always for Universal Ends, and therein find a perpetual rest. Think of the down-trodden middle,

y~K The Etiquette of Rin^ We have often been asked to inform a correspondent, (in our editorial capacity,) why the wedding ring is placed upon the fourth fingerof the wife's hand. We have sought to obtain the origin of the costume but have not succeeded to our own satisfaction. Some authorities tell us that there is a particular conjunction of veins at that point, connecting more directlv wiih ihe heart than ai others, which makes it a fitter place.— Others say it is their best protected from wear and injury from contact. And there is an old legend which looks plausible, which runs in this wise: The wedding ring is put on the fourth finger of the woman's hand, because in the original formality of marriage, it was placed on the top of the thumb, with the words, 'In the name of the Father,' then on the next finger with the words, 'and of the Son,'and on the middle finger with,'and of the Holy Ghost,' and finally on the fourth, with the 'Amen.*
But there are other sorts of rings, thnn wedding rings, the dispositions of which is sometimes a question put to us for solution. Engnged rings,^ for instance, which, in olden times, (il we can trust the legendaries) were worn on the on either hand.
