From tkt Boston. Daily ChronotQpe. The Peasantry of Francc. fifthe late Henry Coleman's "Euro* f»eao Life and Manner*/' is a very grailfylijg picture of the rural laborers of
France. Our neighbor, ihe-Pf/"'* seems .to regard the pleasantness of th^ picture as due to the Catholicreligion of France.
But like causes produce like effects. How is it with the Catholic peasantry of Ireland, compared with the Protestant of any country! Is not the peculiar happiness of the French peasantry rather due to the better hold which they have upon the soil? But to the picture, and If the Catholics please, wo will give them the whole glory of it with all our? heart, only begging them to go on and make more such: "I seldom went among afield of laborers in England or Scotland, especially if they were women, without some coarse joke or some indecent leer at least it has happened to me many times and seldom without being solicited by some, "to drink your honor's health and never, especia'ly in Scotland, without finding them sallow, haggard, harefooted, ragged and dirty. In France, it is the reverse they are well clad, with caps as white as snow, or neat handkerchiefs tied around their heads the men with neat blouses or frocks, and good hats I have scarcely ever seen a barefooted or bare-leggod women in France let them be doing what they will they are always tidy the address even of the poorest (I do not exaggerate) is as polite as that of the best people you find in a city and oh far from ever soliciting money, they have refused it in repeated instances, when for some compensation Count de Gourcy toid me again and again, that even the most humble of them would consider it an ofFence to to have it offered to them. I do not believe there Cver was a happier peasantry than the French. Drunkennoss is entirely unknown among them: and they are pre-eminent for their industry and economy. I went into one field, with a farmer, where there were nearly a hun dred, principally women and children, gathering grapes, and I did not see one among them whom I should not have been perfectly willing to have met at table, or in any other situation. "I never knew a people where there is so much charity to the poor and as to church-going, so far as that constitutes religion.no people go before them and in no places of religious worship have I everseen more attention, or more apparent devotion. I should as soon think of seeing a dead man sitting erect in a chair at church, as seeing an individual in the congregation asleep. The churches, too, are all free. mi may moke some contribution at the door, if you choose, but nothing is demanded. "A very well informed and most respectable Amorican of my acquaintance, who has resided in France twenty-five years, in Paris and in the country, says ho does not believe that there is in any country more conjugal fidelity, or stronger domestic affections and that in this respect, the best French society is a picture of what is most charming in domestic lifo. I have another friend who has been in French society for seven years, and ho emphatically confirms the stateroom."
Intoxit'iitmn in Sweden.
The laws against intoxication aro enforced with great rigor in Sweden.— Whoever is seen drunk is fined for the first oflbnce three dollars for the second six for the third and fourth a still larger Hum, and is also deprived of tho right of voting at elections, and of being appointed a representative. Ho is, besides.publicly exposed in the parish church on the following Sunday. If the same individual is found committing tho same offence fifth time, he is shut up in tho house of correction, and is condemned to sjx months, hard labor if he is again guiltiy 10 a twelvemonth's punishment of a simi^ lar description. It the offunqa has been committed in public, such as at a fair, an auction &c„ the fine is doubled and if tho offender has mado his appearance at a church, tho punishment is still more sovere. Whoever is convicted of having induced another toIntoxicatoJbiimscIf is fined three dollars, which sum & doubled if lite person be a minor. Anbcelesiastic who falls into this offence loses his benefice? if he is a layman who occupies tiny considerable post, his functions are suspended, perhaps he is dismissed, Drunkenness is never admitcd as an excuse for «ny crime and whoever dies when dftmk is buried IgiHnviiniousiy, and deprived of the prayers of the church, ft is forbidden to give, aftd more explicitly to sell, any spirituous liquor® to students, workmen, servants, apprentices, or private soldiers. Whoever is observed drunk in \he streets, or making a noise in a taverft, is sure to be taken to prison and detained till sober, without, however, being on that account exempted from the fines. One half of these fines go to the informers, (who aro generally police officers.) the other half to the poor. If the delinquent has no money, he is kept in prison until some some one pays for him, or be has work ed out his enlargement. Twice a year these ordinances aro rend aloud from the ulpit by the clergy and every taverneeper is bound, under a penalty of a heavy fine, to have a copy of them hung up in the principal rooms of his house.

kr^acific Railway.
The Pacific Railway project is now engaging the attention of all minds interested in the commercial greatness and prosperity of this Republic. All admit the practicability of the enterprise. but differences exist as to the plans proposed for its accomplishment. The subject and the various plans will undoubtedly come up before Congress at its next session. What the action of Congress may be, we cannot speculate byt it i& too probable that ambitious men will mix up their own private ends, jealousies and prejudices with the discussion of the subject. Already wire-pullers are said to be at work to commit the cabinet to a particular scheme, and the projectors of the different plans are ceaseless in their exertions to outstrip each other in gaining favor in their support.
This rivalship for personal elevation or profit is the greatest evil to which the project is exposed. It may complicate the views and action of Congress, and delay a final decision. It cannot defeat the project*—since the desires, the sym pathies, and the voice of the people of the whole Union are turned towards the enterprise, and will prevent its abandon jpent. Those, then, who will drag in sectional or party jealousies will receive the people's indignant condemnation, and we would give early warning to Congress to shut out all such influences from their deliberations, and discuss and decide on the project in that broad spirit of patriotism and national pride which alone consonant with the noble aspirations of our people, and the interests and necessities of our Republic.
The sneer of those, tvlio for the meanest ends ridicule this new-born zeal fcr internal improvement, little affects the firm resolve of tho people to open up a highway across this continent for the commerce of the whole world. The idea is too practicable, and the advantages too great, and too well and generally understood, to be abandoned by the American people, because some narrow, selfish-minded creatures cannot give it their admiration. It is not one of our national characteristics to shrink from great achievements, and now that our national ambition contemplates driving our iron horse to the gold regions of California and the shores of the Pacific, it will never cease until its desire is ac -N. Christianity a Failure.
A President of a Puritan College in New England is said to have declared that Ckrirdianiiy is a failure! In what respect it has failed he does not condescend to mention, neither has he shown what would .be a proper substitute.— That it has failed to make all men honest, virtuous and just, is true, but that it has failed to make every man so who believes its doctrines, and faithfully practices its precepts, we deny, and it would take something stronger than the dogmatic declaration of a crochetty-bniined professor to make ,us believe. Men, mistaking causes and effects, frequently come to the most absurd conclusions.— It was but recently we read a pamphlet, in which the author undertook to demonstrate from existing evils in society, that all civil governments were failures, and hence inferred that universal license was prelerablo. The writer is not able to see that tho evils complained of were the necessary results of his own system, which It was the object of civil government to check, and without whose controlling influence society would become little better than a pandemonium. The author expected too much from civil government, forgetting that its institution is to protect society from tho bad passions of ev»l men, by punishment and making it their interests to restrain them. That it should make every man a perfect pattern of a good citizen is not to be expected other Influences have to operate upon his mind and feelings to produce this effect. The Puritan professor has probably fallen Into some such mistake.—Phila. Ledger.
Oxen vs. Horses.
Edward Stabler, Esq., of Montgomery county. Maryland, writes to the editor of the Plow, Loom, and Anvil, that in 1822 ot '23 ne commenced the substitution of oxen for horses on his farm, lie began in midsummer to break up a field of wheat. For a day or two the oxen suffered greatly with the heat, in the middle of the day, but, by rising early and resting two or three hours at noon and feeding on dry hay, he was able to plow nearlv as much with a pair of oxen os with a pair of horses, and the work was quite as well dono. The horses consumed about one bushel of grain per day and tho oxen none. He found the result, after a thorough trial, so much in favor of oxen, that he has ever since continued their use. For many years there was not a furrow ploughed on his farm except by oxen. He observes that oxen, if properly broken, quite as read| ily, if not more so, take to and keen the furrow, as horses. His rule is to keep
feed the canon crows. That ihe ox can better inand this harsh usage, is certainlv no valid or sufficient reason that he should be subjected to it. Use him with (Kjual care and humanity, and He will just as certainly and with much more profit repay it to his owner."
