<From the Detroit Commercial Bulletin>. Telegraph Invention. We saw to-day in successful operation
one of the instruments invented by Col. Speed, President of the Erie and Mich-
igan Telegraph Company, which bids fair
to work an entire revolution in the man-
ner of sending telegraphic despatches, enabling an operator to write from Chi-
cago direct to New York or New Or-
leans—a feat never before supposed to
be possible. The instrument is a beau-
tiful piece of mechanism, and reflects
great credit upon its inventor. When the lines are furnished with them and
with the new insulating caps invented
by Col. Speed, telegraphing will be more
certain and prompt than it is now.
For a more particular description of
the operation of the instrument, we would direct attention to the following extract of a letter addressed by Colonel Speed
to Mr. Colfax, editor of the St. Joseph Register:
"It will enable us to write from Chicago, St. Louis or Orleans, to New York, Boston or Halifax, <without re-writing;> thereby avoiding the errors made by the copyist at the re-writing stations. The improvement consists in making one galvanic circuit break and close a second circuit, both ways, the second a third, and so on, for an unlimited distance; the operator at the extreme end being able to break and close the different circuits, and consequently write on all the Registers connected with the through wire, without the attention of any one, at those stations not receiving the measure. "Lines of telegraph cannot be worked advantageously, even with my new insulators, for more than four or five hundred miles in one circuit. To work a line for eight or ten hundred miles in
one circuit would require so powerful a battery and one of such intensity that much of the electric current would be lost in consequence ot imperfect insulation—our best non-conductors being merely very poor conductors. My improvement will enable us to <divide the lines into such circuits> as can be work-
»inc8 into such circuits as can be work- y^,,
ed with certainty in <bad> weather, and will send a<message from St. Louis or New Orleans to New York without rewriting>." ———————

in the rice-water discharges and the muscles of Cholera patients. Prof. Mussey experimented upon specimens of fluid obtained by the condensation of vapor by the side of Cholera patients—on a single drop, placed under the microscope, a multitude of ani-
malcules were discovered moving in all directions. In the <rice-water> discharges also, the same <animals> were discovered—one of these animals, viewed through a magnifier of 2000 linear diameters, appears about <one-fourth> of an inch long, and moves with a lateral flexure of his body, like a serpent on the ground.
These animals exhibit considerable tenacity of life—they are active at nearly eighty degrees Fahrenheit. The atmospheric animalcules survived thirteen days in a closely corked phial, and the
In the muscle of a Cholera patient, taken ten hours after death, multitudes of animalcules were seen but the same experiment with a piece of muscle taken from a subject, dead of erysipelas, discovered not a single animalcule.
The hydrant water was also tested without finding any of those animals, and the atmosphere of rooms and neigh borhoods some days after the Cholera
