I The Tularee Plains in California.!* The Galena Advertiser publishes the
following extract from a private letter lOliuwiug CAM A*. VM^K? from California: 1« "The gold mines have actually ruined California in an agricultural point of view. !n fact, agriculture will never be of any consequence in this country, except where water can be found to irrigate the land and water is scarce all over, the country except in the mountains. As a grazing country it is probably the best in the world and a statement of the numbers of cattle, horses, elk, deer, antelope, &c., that roam wild over the Tularee Plains, would not be credited if stated. These Plains are on an average 60 miles wide and 500 miles long In crossing them I have seen a drove of elk that covered more than four square miles of ground, all running at the height of their speed. Droves of wild horses and antelope were quietly feeding at a few miles distant, without manifesting the least alarm, as they are accustomed to such stampedes of elk. Millions of wild geese were flying overhead, having been aroused by the elk. Their noise was deafening. Travelling two and a half hours, at a brisk trot, through this wilderness of animated nature, brought us to the San Joaquim'E timbered banks and to water. At the crossing, the Tularee plains are forty-one miles wide. The river, like a huge anaconda, winds through their centre.— The plain is without wood or water, except immediately on the banks of the river. The plains are literally covered with elk horns, some of them so large that I could not lift them. One set, in particular, was so enormous that two men had a heavy lift to throw it in^o the wagon. It is to be sent home as a curiosity. At the river we got some of the finest salmon, which were speared by our Indians. We also caught some small fish with a hook and line. The water is cold, clear and transparent.— Salmon of twenty-five to sixty pounds weight were seen wending their way up the stream. We crossed the river in a boat, swimming our horses. The ferryman—a Missourian—told me that fever and ague prevailed to a fearful extent in the neighborhood, and I soon had occular demonstration of the fact, by the shaking of two hereditary bondsmen from Mexico, who were crossing over with us. But the mines, considering the exposure to which a man is subjected, are healthy. Intermittent fever is common, hui it yields readily to quinine. But one man died of bilious fever while I was there he was an Oregonian.
Young Man, Stop!
You, young man, on the way to the ball-alley or billiard-room, with a cigar in your mouth, and with an appetite for a mint julep—stop a moment. Are you not in a dangerous way? Will those places, or your habits, lead you to respectability or usefulness in society Will you, by them, become more moral, more virtuous, or intelligent 1 If not, stop where you are, we beseech of you. You have nobleness of heart, perhaps, and a generous disposition. You may do good to those about you, if you will. Your example, if it be such as will lead to virtue, will draw others after you or if it leads to vice or error, will also, and the more readily, lure others in the way of evil.
Then, young man, stop and think upon your course! Where is it leading If to bad habits and low associates, stop instantly. Stand firm. Take not another step in the dangerous way, but turn back while you have the power, and seek the way of virtue, the ways of intelligence, and you may do good in your day and generation, and may be esteemed by those who enjoy your acquaintance.
A DEATH-BED CONTRACT.—There lives in Covington, Ky., (or did yesterday) man worth about #70,000, who lies upon what may be, and probably will be his death-bed. Like many of us, ho does not like to die, yet the future he does not so much think of, as tho w6rldly treasuro he is to leave behind. Physicians he utterly despises, and has, during his present illness, suffered on without their aid, but the excessive bodilv nains that he has of lato experience J, torcod hiut on Saturday, to send for one.
On the arrival of the doctor, he submitted his proposition, viz Ho agreed to give the doctor three thousand dollars if no would restore him to health, to be decided by threo citizens of Covington— but if he diod, the doctor was to pay threo hundred dollars to such heir (unknown) as he should name in his will and he positively asserted that not one dime more would he risk. Three thouKand dollars was as much as his life was worth. Tho doctor would not accede to the terms in black and white, but fi« nally compromised in writing on two thousand dollars if he saved him, and if not he was to have no fee. Wo very much foar our worthy friond, the doctor, from what wo hear of tho condition of "Old Avarice," will, or has lost tho two thousand dollars.—Cin. Com.
IIKAVKN.—A negro woman at the South was relating her experience to a gaping congregation of her own color, Among other tilings she said she had been to heaven. One of the brethren asked her—"Sister, vow see any black folks in heaven?" She replied, "Oh, go way, Sam, don't put a body out 'sposo 1 go in do kitchen when I was
THE TAIL
or CIVILIZATION.--A WIS-
consin orator, who was lately enlightening his audience with illustrations of our country's progress, used the following emphatic remark: "Feller-citiiens— the tail of civilization is now exactly whar the front ears was no more'n sixty vears ago." 'I'lie remark was received with boisterous cheers.
We learn, that during the last year, five hundred and forty young ladies fainted away on various occasions. More than two hundred of thera fell into the arms of young gentlemen. Forty were Caught by their aunts and grandmothers and only one had the misfortune to fall on the floor. She, however, picked out a soft place to fall upon and was provijdentially received by an ottoman.

Her husband seemed very much satisfied, and pro* posed to use six bottles, as he felt confident it would perform a perfect cure. STILL ANOTHER WONDERFUL CURE? READ THIS EXTRAORDINARY CASE. December 25 th, 1848..
DR. SWAYNE—Dear Sir: Having contracted a' severe cold, which settled upon my lungs, attended* with a violent cou^h, pain in my side and breast, difficulty of breathing, 1 was attended by physicians of the first respectability, but my symptoms became very alarming there was an abscess formed in my lungs and made its way through my side, and discharged large quantities of puss externally, so that my physicians thought the power or functions ot one of my lungs were totally de-' stroyed—therefore supposed the case entirely hopeless. This inournful state of things continued for' along time, until I was wasted and worn lo it skeleton. I had tried a number of remedies, but all failed to do any (*ood. But there still being a spark of hope left with me and my anxious parents, and having heard of the great virtues ot yourCOMPOUNDSYRUPOP WILD CHERRY, and of its being recommended by physicians of the first eminence, I concluded tomalce trial of it, and to my great satisfaction my cough gradually
better, the hole in my side began to heal, ami am now happy to say, from a poor and almost hopeless skeleton, I have become henlthv, and weigh more than I ever have. All my neighbors can testify to the above facts.

Dec. 12th, 1848
DR. SWAYNE—Dear Sir: I cheerfully add my testimony in favor of your valuable Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, which 1 conceive to be truly the wonder and blessing of the age. For the last four years I have been afflicted with the asthma. Sleep had become a stranger to me night after night would I have to sit up in my bed. I was attended by four or five different physicians, also having used various patent medicines, but all of no avail. I continued to grow worse, until I commenced the use of your valuable Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, which afforded me instant relief. After using several bottles I was restored to perfect health.
Yours, with respect, SARAn B.
EVANS.
Any information respecting the above case will be freely given by her husband, HAMPTON W.
