]iw: Bone Meal for Cow*. .-svrfjt is supposed by many that cows are «fond of bones because they require «something of that nature to restore what ^they lose when they give milk. Milk is the article which nature has provided for young animals whose bones are

3

forming and growing and it is found to be the best article they can ^ave. Now a cow that has come to maturity can afford to yield up same of her milk without injury, as her bones are already formed. Yet she may yield such an abundance of milk as to injure her own carcass. We find some cows running to milk, as the phtase is, and becoming poor in flesh while they are yielding large quantities. Such cows are more liable to suffer from disease or derangement of the system than cows that give an ordinary quantity and incline to flesh. The garget in particular, which -always affects the udder, is always found to be most troublesome in cow8 that yield large quantities of milk.

This is the theory—the great milkers injure their bones by parting with too much that is needed to supply the nat ural waste of the bone. Now, as to the remedy—bone meal has been used on the supposition that it might supply the waste occasioned by the great yield of milk. And a number of farmers in Es sex county, who have tried it have reported to us that they found the remedy effectual. Bone meal is now kept in agricultural warehouses for the purpose of restoring cows that hanker after bones.

No harm will result from eating any bones that are found in the street provided they are well ground by the cow before she attempts to swallow them.— Any lg)nes may be pounded fine with a sledge hammer and given to cows. Or the meal may be obtained in this city.— Mast. Plowman.

The above relates to questions of great practical and theoretical importance. The early renders of this journal need not be informed how often nnd earnestly we have urged upon the attention of the agricultural community the value of bone earth in all soils, whether used as pastures, meadow or grain lands. The amount of phosphate which is annually wasted in the clung, urine, and milk of animals in this country is infinitely larger than is supposed. The elements of bones are not abundant in ordinary earths hence their loss, no matter in wlmt shape, is a serious calamity. In the bread, meat, milk, potatoes, and other food consumed by the human fumily, there is a prodigious wusto of valuable phosphates, and sulphate of lime and magnesia, under the present customs of society, without any fuir excuse whatever. As the country becomes older, and its cities and vi lages more populous, tho nocessity for saving night soil increases, whilst the quantity oxtracted from cultivated lands and lost is equally augmented. Pursue this system of robbing the soil of the elements of bones one or two generations longer, and not only cows but children will have to oat bones to satisfy the demands of nature to repair the distorted, enfeebled skeletons within them.' When a child, a calf, a colt, or a lamb, can organise its frame work out of iron then it will do to waste the phosphate of lime in the oxcretions of animals.— Gcncsse Farmer.

A Queer Ilend Dress.

Lynch in his expedition to the Dead Sea thus describes a queer head dress, which the women about Beyrout wear: "The most striking peculiarity of dress wo saw, was the tataur or horn, worn mostly by tho wives of mountuin eers. It was 14 inches to two feet long, three or four inches wide at the base, and about one inch at the top. It is mado of tin, silver or gold, accordin to the circumstances of tho wearer, an it is sometimes studded with precious stones. From the summit suspends a veil, which falls upon the breast, and at will conceals the features. It is worn only by married ones of tho highest rank, and once assumed, it is worn for life. Although the temple mny throb and tho brain be racked with fever, it cannot bo laid asido. Put on with the brjdal robe, it does not givo place to the shroud. It is supposed to have some reference to the words, ••the horns of the righteous shall be exalted."

BAD TKMPKR.—The greatest plague in life is a bad temper. It is a great waste of time to complain of other people's the best thing is to amend our own and the next best quality is to learn to bear with what we meet in others. A bad temper will always tire itself out, if it find no one to resent it and this very knowledge Is worth a trifle. Irascibility is very injurious to health, and so, in fact is every morbid indulgence of our inferior nature. Low spirits, melancholy, diffidence, disinclination for ordinary duties, discontent, fretfulness, even down to mental lassitude, indolence, or despair—are very inimical to enjoyment and life and every possible effort should be made to cast them to the winds, and look unhlushingly into the truth bf the fact. It is astonishing what a little reflection will do. Tho fears are mostly imaginary, with one dash of resolution may all be ovorcome.

Let a man have all the world can give him ho is still miserable, if he has a grovelling, unfettered, undevout mind. Let him nave his gardens, his fields, his woods, his lawns, for grandeur, plenty, ornament, and gratification, while at the same time God is not in all his thoughts and let another have neith«r field nor garden, let him look at nature with an enlightened mir.d, a mind which can see and adore the Creator in his works, can consider them as demonstrations of his power, his wisdom, his goodness, and in his poverty he is far happier than the other in his riches. The one is but little higher than a beast, the other but little lower than an angel.—Anonymou*.

THE BUGS IN IRELAND.—Upon a traveller telling Gen. Doylo* an Irishman, that he had been where the bugs were so large and powerful that two of them would drain a man's blood in one night, the general wittily replied, "My good sir, we have the same animals in Ireland, but

thev arc callcd humbugs.'

DR. H. SWAYNE—Dear Sir: We have been in receipt of yoHr invoice of WILD CHERRY for about two weeks, and we most say that wa? feel encouraged that the sales will be exten* sive this year. One customer, who came for the second bottle, stated that his .5 wife had been given up by her physician recently, supposing that she would not survive more than twenty-four hours. A consulting physician pronounced her case desperate—both of t)iem are of high standing in this place as scientific men and gentlemen. The first bottle had the effect to strengthen her so much, that she leaves her bed and moves about the house. Her husband seemed very much satisfied, and pro* posed to use six bottles, as he felt confident it would perform a perfect cure. Wc feel confident ourselves that it is much superior to any medicine of the day, and in justice ought to take the precedence. Yours, respectfully, G. & J. G. HILL. STILL ANOTHER WONDERFUL CURE!

READ THIS EXTRAORDINARY CASEi December 25th, 1848. DR. SWAYNE—Dear Sir: Having contracted severe cold, which settled upon my Fungs, attended with a violent cough, pain in my side and breast, difficulty of breathing, 1 was attended by physithe first respectability, but my symptoms became very alarming there was an abscess formed in my lungs and made its way threngh my side, and discharged large quantities of puss externally, so that my physicians thought the power or functions ot one of my lungs were totally destroyed—therefore supposed the case entirely hopeless. This mournful state of things continued for along time, until I was wasted and worn to a skeleton. I had tried a number of remedies, but all failed to do any good. But there still being a spark of hope left with me and my anxious parents. and having heard of the great virtues of yourCOMPOUND SYRUPOF WILD

CHERRY,

and of its being recommended by physicians of the first eminence, I concluded to make trial of it. and to my great satisfaction my cough gradually

better, the hole in my side began to neal, and am now happy to say, from a poor and almost hopeless skeleton, I have become healthy, and weigh more than I ever have. All my neighbors can testify to the above facts.'

ABRAHAM HUNSICKER,

2 miles from Skippackville, Skippack Tp. Pa. ANOTHER SEVERE CASE OF ASTHMA. PHILADA, Dec. 12th, 1848

DR. SWAVNE—Dear Sir: I cheerfullv add my testimony in favor of your valuable Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, which 1 conceive to be truly the wonder and biesaingof the age. For the last four years I have been amicted with the asthma. Sleep had become a stranger to me night after night would I have to sit up in my bed. I was attended by four or five different physicians, also having used various patent medicines, but all of no avail. I continued to grow worse, until I commenced the use of your valuable Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, which afforded me instant relief. After using several bottles I was restored to perfect health.

Yours, with respect, SARAH B. EVANS. Any information respecting the above case will be freely given by her husband,

HAMPTON W. EVANS,

Carpenter, corner of Eighth and Pearl Sts. Important Caution—Read I Readt! There is but one genuine preparation of Wild Cherry, and that is Dr. Swayne's, the first ever offered to the public, which has been sold largely throughout the United States and some parts of Europe: and all preparations called by the name of Wild Cherry, nave been put out since this, undercover of some deceptive circumstances, in order to give currency to their sales. Each bottle of the genuine is enveloped with a beautiful steel engraving, with the likeness of Wm. Penn thereon also, Dr. Swayne's signature, and asa further security, the portrait of Dr. Swayne will be added hereafter, so as to distinguish his preparations frorri all others.
