Adaption of Capacity of Pursuit. The New York Sun hns an article to show the great causes of lack of success in business. It is found in the ill adaption of capacity to pursuit, and the false estimate set upon dignity of various pursuits. The boy without mcchanical taste or genius, apprenticed to a trade which involves delicate invention and construction, is starling on a path which must of necessity be thorny—a path for which his feet are not sandalled, and which the little phrenological and physiological acuteness. natural to all parents, should at all hazards, have kepi him from. The Sun says truly "The man, too, with a genius quick and comprehensive enough for turning a furrow, building a stone wall, or playing the cobbler with an old shoe—but entirely void of disposition to learned or intricate pursuits—is out of Jhis place professing chemistry, or attemptingto fabricate telescopes. It is natural, indeed, for the boy or man of common ambition, to aspire to the highest and most'difficult pursuits, but experience ought, ere this, to have taught all men the folly of coveting or attempting ends to which

they

have no adequate means.

If a goose were to imagine itself an eagle, and to fly towards the sun on the spur of its fancy, it would at a certain point be struck blind and dashed to the earth. Some men in conceit of capacity and search of profession, fly as absurdly wide of their true sphere as such a goose. And this is why boys and young men—why persons of all ages, BO much fail of success in the pursuits of life."

A GOOD 'UN.—The Philadelphia correspondent of the Buffalo Republic, tells the following good 'un, which may be

scrap-booked

as a companion to the

'Elegy-encircler' story. A young lady, one of those affected Misses who belong to the'upper ten.' recently entered the store of a fashionable milliner, with whom her family were acquainted, for the purpose of making some trifling purchase. 'How is your motner, Miss politely inquired the lady of the store. •She is not very well, madam, replied Affectation. 'Ah I what is the matter with her •She fell down stairs and hurt her CURTSEY BENDER.' 'Her what 'Her curtsey bender.1 'Curtsey bender 1 What is that' in quired the puzzled milliner. 'Why, her knoe!!'

It caused the good lady a very painful effort to prevent her committing a downright act of rudeness. She succeeded, however but several young ladies present wore forced to make a precipitate retreat to give full vent to their risibilities which the ludicrousness of the remark could not fail to produce.

QUICK IN HER APPLICATION.—'It amazes me ministers don't write better sermons—I am sick of their dull prosy affairs,' said a lady in the presence of parson. 'But, it is no easy matter, my good woman, to write good sermons, suggested the minister. 'Yes,' rejoined the woman, 'but you are so long about it I could write one in half the time, if I only had the text.' 'Oh, if a text is all you want,' suid the parson, '1 will furnish that. Take this one from Solomon 'It is better to dwell in a corner of a house-top, than with a brawling woman in a wide house." •Do you mean me,sir inquired the ladv. quickly. •Oh, my good woman,' was the grave response, 'you will never make a good sermonizer you are too soon in your application.' _______

A SLAVEHOLDER ARRESTED IN CANADA FOR WA^S BY HIS SLAVE.—The Toronto Examiner notices a case tried at the present Assizes there, in which Dr.Siotie, a southern slaveholder, had been arrested, kept a few hours in jail, and held to bail, while on a visit to that city, at the suit of Brown, his formerslave, who had escaped from bondage, on a claim on the part of said Brown of compensation for services rondered Dr. Stone while in slavery. The court decided, and very correctly, that Brown could not recover, on a claim in Canada, any compensation as would not have been recognised as due to him in the courts of the State where the parties had resided while Brown was Stono's slave. He was accordingly subjected to the full costs of the suit, which the Examiner thinks he deserved to be, and that the claim was a vile conspiracy to extort money from a stranger.

Some years ago a chap in a town of Maine, having played the "gay gallant" a little too freely to a distiller's daughter —quite overstepping the modesty of nature—he was called to account by the old gentleman, who demanded sharply "what excuse he had for such conduct "Nothing," was the reply, "but exuberance of spirits." "Is that all,

the old fellow as he brought down his cane upon the floor with terrible empha* sis "then let me tell you, sir, the sooner you get them

BRANDY AND WATER.—The New Orleans Picayune relates an anecdote of a man In that city who being seized with the premonitory symptoms of cholera, was advised to take an ounce of brandy a day, but having no scale in which to weigh it, he luckily recollected that eight drachms make an ounce, accordingly he took eight stiff horns, and told the doc tor that he felt "much better."

•What business are you innoir, Jim t* asked a friend of an acquaintance whom he mot in a fashionable saloon. '•Me oh, 1 am in the dry goods business I've just been purchasing.' •Thedry goods business! why! heard that you were loafing.' •I mean,' replied Jim, 'that being particularly dry just now, I purchased somethingfoorf.'

PROFESSIONAL CANDOR.—"Will the galranic rings cure depression asked a lady. "What has caused the complaint, madam asked the doctor.— "The loss of my husband," mournfully replied the lady. "Then you had better get a wedding ring," said the doctor.

about two weeks, and we must say that We feel encouraged thatthe sales will be exten•sive this year. One customer, who came for the second bottle, stated that his wife had been given up by her physi-

cian recently, supposing that she would not survive more than twenty-four hours.

A consulting physician pronounced her case des* perate—both of them are of high standing in this lace as scientific men and gentlemen. The first ottle had the effect to strengthen her so much, that she leaves her bed and moves about the house. Her husband seemed very much satisfied, and pro* posed to use six bottles, as he felt confident it would perform a perfect cure. Wc feel confident ourselves that it is much superior to any medicine of the day, and in justice ought to take the precedence. Yours, respectfully, G. &

STILL ANOTHER WONDERFUL CURE! READ THIS EXTRAORDINARY CASE. December 25th, 1848.

Sir: Having contracted a

severe cold, which settled upon my lungs, attended with a violent cough, pain in my side and breast, difficulty of breathing, 1 was attended by physicians of the first respectability, but my symptoms became very alarming there was an abscess formed in my lungs ana made its way through my side, and discharged large quantities of puss externally, so that my physicians thought the power or functions of one of my lungs were totally destroyed—therefore supposed the case entirely hopeless. This mournful state of things continued for along time, until I was wasted and worn to a skeleton. 1 had tried a number of remedies, but all failed to do any good. But there still being a spark of hope left with me and my anxious parents, and having heard of the great virtues of your COMPOUND SYRUP OF W^LD CHERRY, and of its being recommended by physicians of the first eminence, I concluded to make trial of it, and to my great satisfaction my cough gradually rew better, the hole in my side oegan toneal, ana am now happy to say, from a poor and almost hopeless skeleton, I harve become healthy, and weigh more than I ever have. All my neighbors can testify to the above facts.

Dec. 12th, 1848

Sir: I cheerfullv add my

testimony in favor of yoor valuable Compound Syrup of Wild Cherrv, which 1 conceive to be truly the wonder and blessing of the age. For the last four years I have been anlicted with the asthma. Sleep had become a stranger to me night after night would I have to sit op in my bed. I was attended by four or five different physicians, also having used various patent medicines, but all of no avail. I continuea to grow worse, until I commenced the use of your valuable Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, which afforded me instant relief. After using several bottles I was restored to perfect health.

Yours, with respect,

Carpenter, corner of Eighth and Pearl Sts. Important Caution—Read I Read!! There is but one genuine preparation of Wild Cherry, and that is Dr. Swayne's, the first ever offered to the public which has been sold largely throughout the United States and some parts of Europe: and all preparations called by the name of Wild Cherry, nave been put out since this, under cover of some deceptive circumstances, in order to give currency to their sales. Each bottle of the genuine is enveloped with a beautiful steel engraving, with the likeness of Wm. Penn thereon also, Dr. Swayne's signature, and as a further security, the portrait of Dr. Swayne will be added hereafter, so as to distinguish his preparations from all others.

Principal office, EIGHTH and RACE Streets. Great Blessing to mothers and Children DR. SWAYNE'S VERMIFUGE.—There is no remedy for the destruction and expulsion of WORMS equal to this. Ono great objection to all other remedies is that they are so nauscous that children cannot be made to take sufficient todo them much if any benefit. This remedy is remarkably pleasant to the taste. Should tnere be no worms, the system will be greatly improved by its use. It is also a great remedy for dyspepsia, sour stomach, &o. Remethber! it is now put up in Bquare bottles, with the portrait of Dr. Swayne on each sido, without which none is genuine.

The above valuable medicines are prepared only by DR. SWAYNE, N. W. comer of EIGHTH and RACE Streets, Philadelphia.
