Jndtcions Hint* for Wives. !Never complain that your husband pores 100 much over newspapers, to the exclusion of that pleasing -converse which you formerly enjoyctjggjlttyiim. Don't hide the paper don it to the children to tear, don be *ulky when the boy leaves it at the door but take it in pleasantly and lay it down before your spouse.
Think what man would be without a newspaper treat it is a great agent fn the work of civilization which it assuredly is, and think how much good newspapers have done by exposing bad husbands and bad wives by giving their ccrors to the eye of the public.
But manage you this way. When vour husband is absent, instead of gossiping with neighbors or looking into shop windows, sit dow* quietly and look over the paper run your eyes over the home and foreign news glance rapidly at the accidents and casualties carefufly scan the leading articles, and at tea time, when your husband again takes up the paper, "my dear what an awful state of things there seems in India or, "what a
terrible,
calamity at
the Glasgow Theatre," or, "trade appears to be flourishing in the norte," and depend upon it down will go the paper. If he has not read the information, he will read it from your own lips, and when you have done, he will ask, "did you, my dear, read Simpson's letter upon the discovery of chloroform?" And whether you did or not, you will gradually get into as cosy a chat as you ever enjoyed, and you will soon discover that rightly used, the newspaper is the wife's real Iriend lor it keeps the husband at home, and supplies capital topics for every day table talk.
Whitewashing.
There are few things that effect a greater amount of possible good, probubly, than whitewash. Applied on the ceiling and inside walls of dwellings and out-houses, it tends to purify the atmosphere by neutralizing or destroy ing those noxious effluvia which are always more or less extensively engen dered
in confined situations, and which are so ofien deleterious to animal health. Applied to the roofs and walls of barns, sheds, and other buildings, it is a greai promoter of durability, and adds tiiso not a little to the neatness and beauty ot their appearance. It is cheap, anJ any one who can 'slack lime.' dissolve sail, und use a white wash brush—not very difficult task, certainly—can employ it successfully and in a way to endure for years unimpaired. It is an excellcni plan in mixing whitewash to add as much salt as the water required to reduce the lime to the requisite consistency, will dissolve. This renders it more durables, and adds not a little to the an-ti-putrescent qualities of the wash. In ^some instances sugar or molasses is added to the mixture, as are also glue, white lead, common paste from wheat flour and rice water. Figments of variour colors arc likewise mixed with it as a matter of mero taste, and when of a nniure sufficiently strong successfully to withstand the neutralizing action ol the alkali, produce a most beautiful and pleasing effect. They do not however augment- the vnluo of the white wat-h contemplated as a mere disinfecting agent, as this quality is owing exclu sivoly to the lime.
This application of whitewash to ihe walls of cellars, and the sprinkling tho somo with fresh burned caustic lime, should not be neglected during spring months, when there is ordinarily a copious evolution of noxious gasos from decaying roots and other similar substances which still remain in, and cannot well bo removed from the bins.— ITasA. Globe.
from tfaCinciniMti Gaiette. The Folly of Fright.
A circumstance was related to the author of this, which he considers too good to bo confined to his own personal knowledge, and therefore solicits its having placo in your valuable columns.
A few hours ago, a gentleman of our acquaintance, upon endeavoring to attire himself with a clean pair of while drilling unmentionables, discovered that he could not button them around his waist, and knowing full well that all his wearing apparel of that peculiar description wero fully loose for him, ho once conceived the idea that his stomach had increased in dimensions, and imagining that to be one of tho premonitory symptoms of cholera, at once retired to bed, rang the bell and ordered his coachman to go for his physician, who, upon arriving and feeling our friend's pulse, and making other peculiar examinations, &c., desired to be informed of the reason that lead him to suppose ho was labor in a under an attack of the prevailing epidemic, to which he repliod by mentioning the tightness of the aforesaid garment. At the northy doctor's request, tho pantaloons were brought forth, and to the great chagrin of our friend and the merriment of those present, it was discovered that the lacing behind had been drawn too tightly, which, combined with the starch, had rendered them almost impossible to be buttoned, even upon a much more deli
o'elj formed person than our fnend possesses. Respectfully,

TT^MBRACE the favorable opportunity presented by the recurrence of the above Delightful Season, to offer their grateful acknowledgments to their kind patrons, for the very liberal encouragement which they have received from them during the past year.
More especially are tneir thanks due, and they are hereby tendered to those constant and fast friends, "Torn"and "Bill" seeing that, in season ana out of season—in rattling hail, drenching rain, and blinding sleet—mid stormy northern blasts, chilly mists, and numbing snows—throughout the fierce rigors o^" keen, biting winter, has their united voice been lifted up, publicly, perseveringly, and powerfully in our behalf! •, i-.
Yes! we take pleasure in acknowledging that "Tom" and "Bill" have worked for us like a—

And we assure them that they have not labored in vain We have, in our business, felt the influence of their championship more than a little! And we hereby publicly covenant with them, (now that they have just retired "to enjoy their ease and dignity" in private life,) should they continue in this more limited sphere, those kind and disinterested exertions in our favor, which so remarkably distinguished them in their public capacity, that we will veicr, knowingly, discredit a single one of their numera

DETROIT, [Michigan.}
DR. H. SWAYNE—Dear Sir: We have been in receipt of your invoice of WILD CHERRY for about two weeks, and we must say that v:e feel encouraged that the sales will be exten-iSC4tl ,„sive thia year. One customer, who came for the second bottle, stated that his 1— wife had been given up by her physi- W cian recently, supposing that she H* 7 would not survive more than vik -i £twenty-fbur hours. A consulting physician pronounced her ease des* perate—both of them are of high standing in thia place as scientific men and gentlemen. The first bottle had the effect to strengthen her so much, that she leaves her bed and moves about the house. 7^ Her husband seemed very much satisfied, and proposed to use six bottles, as he felt confident it *. would perform a perfect cure. We feel confident & ourselves that it is much superior to any medicine of the day, and in justice ought to take the precedence. Yours, respectfully, G. & J. G. HILL. STILL ANOTHER WONDERFUL CURE!**
BEAD THIS EXTRAORDINARY CASE. December 25th, 1848, VI DR. SWAYNE—Dear Sir: Having contracted Ayj severe cold, which settled upon my lungs, attended with a violent cough, pain in my side and breast, difficulty of breathing, was attended by physi' cians of the first respectability, but my symptoms became very alarming there was an abscess formed in my lungs and made its way through my side, and discharged large quantities of puss ex-a temally, so that my physicians thought the powers or functions ot one of my lungs were totally de- S strayed—therefore supposed the case entirely hopeless. This mournful state of things continued for along time, until I was wasted and worn to a skeleton. I had tried number of remedies, but all failed to do any good. But there still being a spark of hope left with me and my anxious parents, and having heard of the great virtue* of yourCOMPOUNDSYRUPOF W1LDCHERRY, and of its being recommended by physicians of the first eminence, I concluded to make trial of it, and to my great satisfaction my cough gradually

better, the hole in my side began to heal, and am now happy to say, from a poor and almost hopeless skeleton, I have become healthy, and weigh more than I ever have. AH my neighbors can testify to the above facts.
