wi'lioft of dollars, which he

eollected there, long lie fore the existence of the |»old mmes b^csame known to the midenu of California generally.

History of the Discovery.

Signor D'Alvcarwentout toCalifornia pearly two years ago, consequence of certain information which hehad received of thegeolotrical character of that country, with the firm belief that vast mines of precious metals wonld be revealed there, upon careful investigation. He was encouraged to this enterprise, also, by his confidence in the powers of a certain magnetic instrument which he had invented. called the "Goldometer," by whose aid he expected to be directed at once to the "Gold Placers," if any such existed. Nor were his expectations disappointed. His scientific calculations proved to be founded in t^uth and profound wisdom, and his new instrument, the "Goldometer," fulfilled his highest hopes. In less thnn two months after reaching California, he struck upon one of the richest gold mines in that country, upon an obscure branch of the Sacramento river, in a gorge of hills extremely rocky and difficult of access, and seldom visited by the native Californians. Disguising his object under the pretence of purely scientific research, he obtained the ni3 of son* fifteen »r twenty simple and faithful Indians. and steadily pursued his task, collecting nften more than $3,000 worth of gold in a single day. which he concealed in deep ravine, without exciting any suspicion whatever, until after the discovery of gold at Capt. Sutter's mill, when the mountains were ransacked by gold seekers, and St?nor D'Alvear's "gold placer." the richest in all California, was beset with greedy adventurers. It is now found that the real mines or sources of the gold, lie in the gorges of the mountains, and not in the beds or sands of the rivers. Previous to leaving California, Signor D'Alvearsold his instrunirnt. the Goldometer, very imperfect one, for #3,000. The person who purchased it confidently expected to make a handsome fortune, by simply finding "gold placers" and selling out the right of digging to the gold workers. Manufacture of the Go'dometer, and publication of the Gnide.

Signor D'Alvear, in compliance with the request of numerous scientific gentlemen, has commenced the inannfncttireof his new Magnetic Instrument, the GOLDOMETER, which he now offers for sale, in the United States, at the remarkably low price of THREE DOLLARS each, accompanied by full instructions for use. and a variety of Philosophical hints drawn from the ancient and modern sciences, or

The Art of finding Mines of Gold Silver, Platinum, Quicksilver, Coal, Iron, Copper, Lead, and oth^r Mineral Riches, the whole being given in a publication called the

Gold Seeker's Gnide

This new work, and the GOLDOMETER, are both now rcadv for sale. The GOLDOMISTER is so simple an instrument, that a child may lenrn to operate with it in five minutes. It is not affected by climate, moisture, or any other known cause, fexcept the natural magnet.) and will retain its'power of pointing out miners! riches in the earth for any number ot years. By the aid of the Guide any person may use the instrument with perfect success.

Farmers and Lund Owners. Farmers and Land Owners throughout the United States, who have reason to suspect the existence of any kind of Mineral riches upon theiland«, should avail themselves of this opportunity to test that fact, by the surest of all known tests, before the abundance of discoveries rn all parts ol the country shall have lessened this source o( wealth in their estate.

Adventurers to California. Persons going to California cannot make a better iavestmenl than by purchasin-.'on? of these instruments, which will not only be worth fifty times i*s value there, to sell again, hut will be of inotiinaMe worth to those who go in search of Gold, as has been proved bv the most abundant experiment both in v. aliforriia and the United States

Testimonials.

feignor D'Alvear docs not deem it necessary to encumber this notice with a longlnt of testi'noninls. in proof of the value of Ms GOLDOMETER and GOLD SEEKER'S GUIDE. The brilliant results of his labors in California, and the discoverv, this vry week, of fresh veins of Gold in Virginia. and beds of coal in Rhode Island, by its u=e. are alone sufficient to stamp it as the greatest discovery of the age. Nothing hut the extreme cheapness of the instrument, an I his desire to see i' used fr the benefit of mankind indues hint to dispose of it at the low price tor which he offers it.— Besides this, his own desire for wealth is nearly satisfied.

Th

following testimonies, in proof of the valths Goldometer, selected Iron a great number equally satisfactory, must suffice for the present

The undersigned, having this day witnessed the practical operation of Signor Jose DeAlvear's newly invented magnetic instrument, th* f.nOMCTT.R. feel entirely satisfied that it possessrs the extraordinary powerof detecting Mineral ores hidden beneath the surface of the earth, and have no doubt that it will nrove an invaluable aid in the discovery of the Mineral resources of the United States and the world.

IMPORTANT CAUTION—READ There ia but one genuine preparation of Wild Cherry, and that is Dr. Swayne's, the first ever offered to the public, which has been sold largely throughout the United States and some parts of Europe: and all preparations called by the name of Wild Cherry have been put out since this under cover of some deceptive circumstances, in order to give currency to their sales. By a little observation no person noed mistake the genuine from the false. Each bottle of the genuine is enveloped with a beautiful steel engraving, with the likeness ot William Penn thereon also Dr. Swayne's signature, and as a further security, the portrait of Dr. Swnvne will be added hereafter, so as to distinguish nis preparation from all others. Now if it was not for the great curative properties and known virtues of Dr. Swayne's Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, persons would not be endeavoring togive currency to their fictitiousnostrums" by STEALING the name of Wild herry. Remember, always bear in mind the name of Dr. Swayne, and be not deceived. cipf Streets, Philadelphia.

•e of Pulmonary Con-

MINISTER.

Dn. SWAYNE—Dear Sir: I feel it a debt of gra titude due IOyou—ami a duty to the afflicted gen erally: to offer my humble testimony in favor of .vourCOMPOUNDSYRUPOFWILDCHERRY. Some three years since, I was violently attacked with cold and Inflammation of the Lungs, which was accompanied with a very distressing cough, pain in the nreast and head, a verv considerable aischarge of offensive mucus from the lungs, especially upon changes of weather, howsver slight.— At first I felt no alarm abont my condition, but was pretty soon convinced that I was rapidly going into consumption. I grew doily weaker, and at length was scarcely able to walk about, or spenk above a whisper, such was the exceeding weakness of my lungs. During this time 1 baa tried various preparations and prescriptions, hut found no relief—growing all the time worse. Jutt here I was advised and persuaded by a dear friend in ilmington to make a trial of your "*yrup of Wild Cherry. I must confess that previously I had been prejudiced against patent medicines, and 1 am still against those coming outof the hands of empirics, but understanding your claims to the profession _and practice of medicine, and hav ing implicit faith in the sayings of my friends, I forthwith purchased of Dr. Shaw, one of your agents, a few bottles and commenced its use.

My disease was at that time of 20 or 25 montb% standing, consequently it was deeply seated. 1 found, however, considerable relief frdm the usa of the first four or five bottles. But being a public

speaker, I frequently attempted to pfeach with my increasing strength, and tiiereby ruptured tliea* vessels that had already bfegun to heal in this

way, doubtless, my cure was greatly retnrded In consequence of acting thus imprudently, 1 had to use twelve or fifteen bottles before 1 was perfectly restored. I have no oucstion, a much smaller number of bottles would have made me sound, but for the above indiscretion. The Syrup allayed the feverish habit, took away the distressing cough put a stop to the dischargo of matter from tne lungs, and gave them and thu entire systnm good health. I have deferred offering this certificate until now, for the purpose of being perfectly satisfied with the permanency of the cure, and now that I foel perfectly well I offer it with pleasure. A
