SEEING THE ELEPHANT.

=&&a The origin of this now common aqjl expressive phrase is thus described-. 1 \j, Some years since, at one of the Philadelphia theatres, a pageant was in rehearsal in which it

was necessary to have an elephant. No elephant was to be had. The "wild beasts" were all traveling, and the property man, stage director and managers, almost had fits when they thought of it.— Days passed in the hopeless task of endeavoring to secure ono, but at last Yankee ingenuity triumphed, as indeed it always does, and an elephant was duly made to order of wood, skins, paint and varnish. Thus far the matter was all well, but as yet they had found no means to make the said combination travel. Here again the genius of the manager, stage director and property man "stuck out," and two of the "supes" were duly installed as legs. Ned one of the true and genuine "b'hoys," held the responsible station of

legs.

Night came and the theatre was crowded with the denizens of the Quaker city the music played itB sweetest strains, the whistle sounded, the curtain rose, and the play began. Ned and the W lulling, HIND-LEGS marched upon the stage. The elephant

and for several nights he played that heavy part to the entire satisfaction of the manager and the delight of the audience. The part, however, was a very tedious one, as the elephant was obliged to be on the stage for about an hour, and Ned was rather too fond of the bottle to remain so long without "wetting his whistle," so he sew his wits to work to find a way to carry a "wee drop" with Stpubenville, new, him. BU1.LETIN No 2

THE

Great Flood of 1847 will lie long remefnlcred in many parts of the West. The swollen streams seemed lo-know no bounds, but rising higher and higher, carried dismay to the inhabitants. Merchants were obliged to remove their wares from the rivers' sides to remoter places families were compelled to desert their dwellings the poor suffered more severely than language can describe. The public authorities were called on to administer aid and counsel. In short a great public calamity had occurred.

Well would it be if the sad consequences of the flood hnd censed when the waters subsided. But 110! ob"The retiring waves left vast nlluvial deposites, which in a few months must give out that deleterfous miasm which produces bilious diseases.

What says the celebrated Dr. Ferguson on this point Answer: "The cause of bilious derangement haa its principal source in halt-dried margins of rivers." All history and experience prove this theory. When the British army encam^l on the plain* of Estramadura, nt a time when the riwer Guadiana. had become dry after a flood, remittent and intermittent fevers raged among the troops with such malignity, that they came nigh being extirpated.

T!1E GRAEFENHERG COMPANY therefore earnestly cali the attention ol the entire West to tlieir most extraordinary and celebrated seriwof Anti-Bilious medicines. In any locality where there is the sligtoest tendency to any form of Fever. Fever and Ague, Dumb Ague ami the like, the inhabitants should at once send to the Gcncml Agent of the district, and have a Graefenberg depot established near them. Wera this done ana the Graefenberj Vegetable Pills and Health Bitters used according to directions, there would be no fear of bilious diseases.

So important are the Graefrnbere Medicines to the people of the West, that the following cteps should be immediately taken. 1st Every neighborhood should have its Graefenberg Depot. By addressing th« General Agent of any District this can be secured. 2d. Families should dub together and get an immediate supply. 3d. Emigrant Societies and other philanthropic bodies should furnish them to the needy.

By such means bilious diseaeas will be entirely prevented. The other medicines of the Campany are most eminently adapted to the diseases for which they are recommenced and consist of the following:

The Grarfenberg Eye lxtimi, the Children's Panac**a, the Green Mountain Ointment, the I onsumptive's Balm-, the Dysentery Syrup.

The General Agent tor Indiana is M. Searojf, Centreville, la., to whom applications for Agencies may be addressed',
