Corrttpondetu* of tA# Bailmn Amman^MiWiiniWToa. January 8d.
The apecial order in the Senate--the Army Bill*—WAR called up at 1 o'clock, and the one in relation to the clothing of Volunteers was passed without amendment and without debate.
Mr. ASS took the floor upon the t»en tjr regiment bill pronouncing the position of the Administration impregnable in re gard to the war and expressing grea: willingness to meet all assaults, as he doubted not they could repel all ascauiit Much praise was bestowed on the Army, and the Senate congratulated that all par* ti« could unite in praising them. Bravely had leaders and soldier* borne themselves under the circumstances in which ibey veie placed.
Mr. Cass gave an account of twentyeight battles and victoriea won by our troops and pronounced the good conduct of our troops most unexampled in the world. The country was also much praised by the speaker, and a wish expressed that he bad been iti Europe at the time these battles were fought, in ordor to bear otfT country praised.
It stated that the total number of troops in Mexico, or on their way to ilex* was 4S,560 n:'o:-34,035 of whom wero under G.n«.-»! Scolf. Ther. .or. 6000 under Taylor, Or Wool. Strong .. ih,. force waa, it wa» nede*»My ?Ugmen I' and when it was augmented it wouiw oo reach iho aggregate of the force ftlrssdy authorized by law.
There was a stirring debate aftef Mr. Cass closed ss to the order of business.— Mr. Calhoun hod the floor for to-fnor row by the order of the Senate, and upon his resolutions. The Senator from $• complained that the Senate endeavored to choke him ofl^ unless he t*ould content, and unless other Senators would consent (hat this bill be considered immediately. Mr. Calhoun pronounced the act of the Senate as discourteous and unprecedented-— Mr. Badger in some very courteous remarks, urged the Senate to place itself right in regard to the Senator ffom South Carolina.
Mr. Butler spoke plainly of the discourtesy to his colleague as unparliamentary and unusual.
Mr. Foote, a young Senator, spoke with some heat of tcheinei designed tode privo the Administration of action upon necessary nnd favorite measures.
Mr- Budger replied to this with a grace and point that made the SenMornpologtze for the utterance of such a word—winch is one very unusual in the Senate.
Mr. Foote spoke two or three times in reply, and with a good deal of manner and feeling, assuming that Mississippi hud been assailed, after it was disavowed, and doing all this with much manner.
Mr. Douglass of Illinois meant no discourtesy to the Senator, but woulJ not vpte

any account. The Resolutions of the gentleman from S. C. were mere nbeirnciions and ought not to take precedence of any bill.
Mr. Davis of Miss, said a few words in regard to th»» Government. I he Army had suffered for want of prompt action here.
Mr. Crittenden said it was not the fault of Congresn, which Imd voted len millions .dollar* nnH fifty thousand men in one day. All that had been asked had bwn voted •promptly, nnd in no case had this body reduced the estimates.
Mr.-Davis said the House had struck out thft estimutes for camp equipage, in cotmequtmce ol which the Army had suffered very much, Mr. D. also said that tprompt legislation would have prevented nil the battles between Cerro Gordo and Mexiso. and the brittle of Buena Vista.— It was the smallness of our Army which made the enemy show fight.
The Senate then made the bill the spe ••ial order for Wednesday at one o'clock, •with the understanding that Mr. Calhoun vlmll bo heard to morrow upon his resolutions.
An Executive session closed the business of tho day.
MUSTAM, the able correspondent of the N. 0. The following issn extract "Time works wonders," soma one hath said and if any evidence ol ita verification ia wanting, •we might cite the present appearance and the situation of affairs in thia famed city of the Axieca—
Now very different do matters and things present 'themselves tiom what they did a few months ago Instead of anarchy and corruption which then 'reigned supreme, the terror of all who were not the favored recipients of the producta of the then 'dsapotic tyranny and the iron-rate of military authority, there is peace of mind and security ol person and property, the height of human happiness- It ia true the cars are saluted with the sounds of martial music, but it comes not from the ermed hosts of a vain.glorious army, marching forth to meet in deadly strife, a foe lhat knows no other motto than "death or victory it emanatea from a band ol heroes, the magnanimous vonqoerore whose Waving banners snd proud em blems are the existing evidences of the might aad valor of a free people—ot the power originating from the free exercise ot thought snd right ol •peech. Instead of anxiety of mind far father or brother, closed doors and windows, and the streets dreerted of everything bearing a respectable appearance, there ie life and gaiety- fashionablydressed ladies and gentlemen riding and walking, and showing themselves off to the bear advantage from balconiea, in every pan of the city, eweet toned music finding its way into the streets through richly colored cartaina behind wbkh may or "may or may not be" some dark eyed senorita coquetting with a gay Lothario. Instead ol guards and sentinels, as tbey then were posted in subjection snd force from tbem contributions aad taxea for the support of a set of worthlew and iadolent hangers on the Government, there are guards to protect the people in the pateau of life and the enjoyment of their pleasaree.

A CHRISTMAS EVE SCENE. A beautiful nnd interest ingscene took place last evening, at the Vestry of the Unitarian Church. Mrs. Holland, the wife of the worthy Pastor of that society, gave out an invitation to nil the juvenile portion of the families of the congregation, to be present with their parents nt the Vestry, at six o'clock, on Christmas Eve. At the appointed time, a great number were in attendance. Much to their suprise they found the Vestry enlivened with evergreens—a piano forte and other music—a beautiful tabio well spread— while in the centro of the room, a Christmas Tree, whose every limb and branch was loaded with a vast variety of article* and books. The assembling waa then opened bv an appropriate address to tho children. Refreshments followed, and after a couple of hours of pleasure, the children were each presented with some article suitable to their age, while those of sufficient vearawere honored with ctftsnkes :n valuable books with unique bindings. Long will the children remember tho Christmas Eve of 1847, and their generous donor.— Rochester Amnrican.
