Uo were h® four timea the Whig candidate. For ourselves, we love—wo revere —Mr. Clay too sincerely. we priie him loo highly, to wish 10 him a candidate for lhe Presidency again. True, the nation was once honored by Washington, but ii has sinco been filled by Polk. A Clay might render it respectable again? but oo such task would add a leaf to hit civic chpplet. What is to prevent Pennaylvanht [God bless our dear, blundering old native State!] from being deceived by another Kane letter? What national •j- can interdict the inconsistent, mischievous, torn.fool conduct of such men aa voted for Birney in *44? When we heard of the popular *o!e in the Empire Slate, io thai, for our country, unhappy .vear, we expressed the hope that Mr. Clay high deserts might never again go a beggitig for the Presidency of the American people. Subsequent reflection has but served to increaae thnt hope. We speak earnestly for ourselwes—for ourselves only.—Scioto Gazette*
JPhmb N*» Odtan* BuiUtin. E I O tn conversing wiih various officers who arrived in the Alabama, we have found. without one exception, that all of them consider the idea of peace as perfectly preposterous, and the details we have received from them, as to the state and prospects of affair* in Mexico, only seem to render more difficult the solution of the problem as to what is, or what ought to be done with Mexico.
To attempt further active and more ex tended operations—to hoW on to what we now have or to retrograde to a line of defence, all epfr""" to be equally surrounded with difficulties of the must formidable nature.
On all these points, we loarn, there is a great diversity of opinion io lhe army, even among the officers of higher ranks, and whose opinions are justly entitled to great weight. AH, however agree, that largo additional force must be thrown iotu tho country, particularly if further •Ctivo operations ore determined on.
A largo portion ef tho better part of the population, dread the withdrawal of the American army, tor fe.tr that it would be followed by icencs of anarchy and lawlessness, as the country is literally witty out ft government, and yet, whilst such nre the sentiments of the sober
m'"^ed
Another dread that exists in Mexico, is, that this guerrilla system will result in a permanent and general organization of regular banditti throughout the countrv, which will be kept up long after the diflv mines with the United States may oe settled, and which it will be impossible to cradicate. It was the same in Spain, where lhe guerrilln bands were not put down for years after the French were expelled, and \jnly by most vigorous and energetic inraMiire*. such aa no government in Mexico will have it in their power to employ.
It was understood that Gen. Scott does not intend to attempt any new operations. xintil he receives further heavy reinforcements ami new instructions from Washington, The probability is, that every thing will remain in statu quo, until after lhe meeting of Congress, and that body tias taken action on the subject.
The column that h«u gone forward.under Major General Patterson, and the one preparing to atart under Major General Duller, would furnish a force sufficient to place adequate garrisons on the road, and at the same time, afford such reinforcements to General Scott, as to enable him. if he thought advisable, to push detachments out to occapy some of the larger towns beyond and around the city.
It was in contemplation, so soon aa ihere was force sufficient for the purpose, to establish a line of posit so as to enclose a larpe portion of the minrnjt district, n*nr the city, and to encourago the working of the mines, which had been greatly interfered with, by the sta'e of the country.
