AMERICAN HUSKY*
A writer in ths Ago thv* discourses wy sbljf, tndto the point: "Look at the Theatre*—the people oome rushing in the middle of« piece end before the ear tain begins to fell, or the teg to be •pollen, or the moral explained, up ttert hundred people in ft tremendous hurry to get out, e» if their very lite* depended upon be* iny somewhere eta within two minutes end a half. Mow many fine effect* in play—-how many chef d'auvrt* in a Concert bare we •een utterly destroyed by thie ill-mannered and indecent haste.
Croea Ferry* and long before the boat ftrrivre two-thirds of tlte paeaengere are crowded at the head of the boat ready to jump ashore, risking life and limb to save ten seconds of time—a ehikfis knocked overboard— a boy'a foot masbed, or a young man in youth's first bloom crippled for life. What matter! That man now walking leisurely My the street got shore nearly half a minute earlier than he would have done had he not run the same risk, and caused perhaps the accident.
Get into an Omnibus, and with one foot rn the step and the other ioside. the driver pulls the door to, «rhips up his horses, and you are pttehed bead first into a stout old gentleman'# diaphragm, or settle down by the stern into a sentimental young lady's lap.
Ride in a Harlem car—you beckon to the driver to stop, but noT he is in a hurry too and you have to run after the lumbering ve hicie and clamber up while it goes along.-— You ring the bell when you with to get out and if you are patient the car will stop in lime, but before you get your foot off the platform it :s in motion again, end you are lucky if you are not landed horizontally in the mod.
Now, what in the name of wonder is the eaosp of all this—do we gain anything No! Do we enjoy anything in this everlasting rush No! Do we live longer or die more happily No
THE LAMA.
The Lama is the only animal associated with man, and undebased by the contact.— The Lama will bear neither beating nor ill* treatment. They go in troops, an Indian going a long distance ahead as guide. If tired, they stop, and the Indian a.ops also. If the delay is great, the Indian, becoming uneasy towards sunset, resolves on supplicating the beasts to resume their joumay. If the Lam* as are disposed to continue tbeir course, they follow the Indiao in good order, at a regular pace and very fast, for their legs are extreme, ly long but when they are in ill humor, they do not even turn their heads towards the speaker, but remain motionless, atanding or lying down, and gazing on heaven with looks so tender, so melancholy, that we might imagine these singular animals had the consciousness of another .life, of a happier exit tence. The straight neck, and its gentle majesty of bearing, the long down of their always clean and glossy skin, their supple nod timid motions, all give them an air, at once noble and sfDiitrve. It must be so in fact, for the Lama is the only croature employed by man, that he dares not strike. If it happens (which is very seldom) that an Indian wishes to obtain, either by force or threats, what the Lama will not wiliinglv perform, the instant the animal finds itself affronted by word or gesture, he raises his head with dignity, and without attempting to escape ill treatment by flight, he lies down, turning his looks towards heaven, large tears flow freely from his beautiful eyes, and in half or three quarters of an hour he expires. Happy creatures, who so easily avoid suffer* inga by death. Happy creatures, who appear to have acccpted life on condition of its being happy. The Indians of the Cordilleras alone possess enough patience and gentleness to manage the Lama, It is doubtless from this extraordinary companion that he haa learned to die when overtasked.

—Dr. Moore, the eloquent and amiable su. tbor of "The Use of the Body in relation to the Mind." says: A tadpole confined in the dark, would never turn to a frog, and an infant deprived of heaven's free light would only grow to a shapeless idiot, instead of a beauteous and reasonable being. Hence, in in (lie deep, dark gorges and ravines of the Swiss Valnjs, where the direct sunshine never reaches, the hideoua prevalence of idiocy startles the traveller. It iaa strange, melancholy idiocy. Many citizens are incapable of any articulate speechsome are deaf, some are blind, some labor under all these priva. lions, and all are misahapeo in almost every pirt of the body. I believe there is, in all places, a marked difference in the healthiness of houses, according to their aspect with re* gard to the aun, and that thoee are the healthiest in which all the rooms are, daring some pert of the day, fully exposed to direct light. It is a well known fact that epidem e* attack inhabitants on tlte shady side of the street, and totally except those on the other side and even in epidemics aoeh as ago*, the morbid influence is o'ten thus partial in it« actions.

Our colony is rapidlyfilling np with an induatrioua, intelligent and moral people, and mast soon beeome tne most populous part of Texas. The Government has recently formed the counties of Grayson. Dallaa, Denton, Collin and apart of Robeson and Navarro within ihe Grant. It ia decidedly the moat healthy part of the State the lands having a gentle undulating surface there are no ponds, swamps or marshes, and no locsl cause for diseaae. The atmosphere is pure and pleaaant. During ihe warmeat montha of aummer there tea conatant hrtese playing over ihe prairies, and the nights are invariably cool the thermometer never riece above 85 to 90, and a the winter never falls below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Itaboundain springs, and at the depth of fifteen or twenty feei, in the midat of the prairie, the best water can be had all the small streams sre peculiarly etna? and crystal like. Colonel William Myers, who removed there (rem Garrard county, Kr., last fall.ssys.in a letter dated 8th May, 1817 "I will not venture to tell my friends in Kentucky that the land here wss better thsn the best land in Kentucky, because they would not believe it but now I assert it, for the aoil is deeper, being in many plscee five feet, and the kindeat land to work I ever put a plough in. I verilr believe that around the forks of the Trinity, lies the largeet body of first rale land in America." From theforkaof the Trinity to Santa Fe, is only about 600 miles by the old Spanish trail, and the newspapers in Texas sre now advocstiug the route op the Trinity, and from its forks by land, as in every respect preferable to the one by Independence, Mo. Why should Emigrants think of going to Oregon or California when they can obtain better land for nothing so much nearer home
This is, perhaps, the last opportunity that will ever offer on the continent of America of getting lands for the mere cost of surveys and costs of deeds. Our colony isemphstically the piece for the poor man's home: there he doee not have to feed his cattle lor six or seven months in ihe year there he will havea home market forall the surplus he can produce for years to come, and with industry snd economy, speedily become rich.
Let no Emigrant loose sight of the importsnt fact that our contracts with the Government of Texas expire on the first day of July, 1848, and that he muat not only be in the Colony, but that he must have selected his Isnd built a house or cabin thereon, and lie residing therein with his family by that day—one day after that date, and the opportunity, of getting landa for nothing, ia perhaps, loet forever. Persons desiring additional information, by addressing the undersigned Trustees or either ol them, post paid, shall receive prompt alien* tion.

undersigned, thankful for the very liberal patronage heliae received from the public, and anxious to merit and receive further lavora in his line of business, would say that he is still manufacturing, Wagons, Carts, Drays and all kinds of heavy vehiclesat short notice, and of the very best materials the country can furnish—both Timber and Iron—and his workmsnship where known will spesk for itrelf, and as it is the way he makes his living he cannot afford to do bad work and use bad materiala. II he were a merchant, and could get work made up for Calicoes-1 and Ribbons, without any hard knocks of his own, and could use puddle iron, such work could be sold cheap, and if such work be wanted (thesehsrd times,) he can makeand sell wagonsat sixty dollars. His painting ia not done in a gaudy style, (to draw the attention from a close inspection of parts more vital to a good article,) but plain and of the beat red lead or any other plain colour that may be wanted. He uses none but Shoenburger's best Juniata iron and if hia or some' other good maker's name is not found stamped on thi tire and other parts beware of it. He warrants his wagons, materials, snd workmsnship, for two years,, but not being a merchant wagon-maker, he ia not prepared to barter off his work, but will give every facility be can to his friends, at hia old stand (a littles eaat of the two spinning wheels.)
